About Headstart Print

Headstart International School, Phuket is a unique educational institution that provides well-rounded learning from Preschool, through to Secondary-Level students. Our mission is to educate our students by cultivating analytical thinking; promoting independence and self-confidence; instilling empathy and respect for others and inspiring a lifelong love of learning.

Our staff members, from the teachers, management, to maintenance staff, are dedicated to giving students a comprehensive education. We believe education is a lifelong process; therefore good habits formed from an early age are an invaluable asset. Our curriculum helps to stimulate students' minds to be naturally inquisitive as well encouraging them to go beyond traditional boundaries. HeadStart uses balanced and challenging educational programs that are formulated to encompass this philosophy.

HeadStart welcomes students from every nationality as we believe that many invaluable lessons and social skills can be learned through early exposure to differing cultures.

HeadStart encourages parents to participate in their children’s learning by following up with materials covered in class.

About the School

HeadStart has been operating in Phuket since 2005 and has grown from a homespun educational program to an International School. Even though we have grown exponentially we have not lost our personal touch and original vision for a well-rounded education.

School Hours:
HeadStart operates five days a week, from 08:30 to 15:30, observing Thai National Holidays.

Ethics and Values

We maintain that positive rewards are more effective and important than punishment. Positive reinforcement is sincere and given liberally and correct behavior acknowledged. Younger students are rewarded with stickers or good marks in their schoolbooks as this lends immediate attention to a successfully completed assignment. Older students are offered prizes such as extended recess or educational computer time. When this is consistently done students are encouraged by the immediate results. As a result, classrooms are more orderly and conducive to learning.

The School Building

We have nine, 48sqm classrooms, hosting 15 students per room. Full facilities for preschoolers, up to year one include size-appropriate toilets and sinks, climbing frames, libraries, educational computer games, learning toys and activities. Year-two-to-eight classrooms feature extensive libraries, projectors and science equipment. As for sports amenities, HeadStart features a junior-size football pitch, an extensive playground and a Go-Kart and bicycle track as well as a 120sqm gym and a similar-sized dance studio with mirrors and parquet floors.

Curriculum

Our curriculum is based on the British National Curriculum: http://curriculum.qca.org.uk
Through our curriculum we aim to stimulate students' minds, as well as to encourage them to push beyond perceived traditional academic boundaries. HeadStart uses balanced, yet challenging educational programs that are formulated to encompass this philosophy. Ustilising proven teaching techniques from educational specialists around the world contributes in shaping the international element which defines our community, and makes for the truly well-rounded educational experience that we pride ourselves on here at HeadStart. Because HeadStart provides a small community setting we are able to offer academic rigor within a compassionate and nurturing environment. We have small multi-age classes with low student-to-teacher ratios. This gives students opportunity to increase knowledge, build positive attitudes, develop character, practice acceptable social habits and foster positive learning.

School Policies

Homework
While not wanting to burden young lives with too much homework, we do believe that self-motivated study is an integral part of growing into a responsible adult. To this end, homework at HeadStart is counted as important as the day courses.

Extra-Curricular Activities
HeadStart provides English as Second Language (ESL) classes for students who need extra coaching, football, tennis, dancing and swimming extra-curricular activities, along with summer and holiday camps.

Behaviour and Discipline
We encourage and acknowledge positive and constructive attitudes. Our teachers are instructed to maintain a high standard of discipline to ensure the happiness and safety of all HeadStart students. For younger students, a 'Time Out' period is employed as tool to allow students to reflect on the result of their actions. If a child repeatedly misbehaves, parents are consulted in order to find a working solution to help the student make the needed behavior modifications. This applies in particular to violent, aggressive and/or destructive behavior.

School Uniform
School uniforms will be worn Mondays and Fridays, for school outings and on special occasions. Please note that HeadStart has its own sportswear for track and field events.

Health and Welfare

HeadStart’s goal is to maintain a healthy environment for your children. Therefore, any student with a fever, cough, cold, flu or other such contagious illness will be asked to stay at home. If your child has been sick with a contagious illness, it is advised to return to school after two clear days without sickness or with written confirmation from a doctor stating that the child is no longer contagious.

Health amenities at HeadStart include an infirmary where basic first aid will be administered – ensuring a clean and comfortable environment for students. The safety of your child is of premium importance to us – we therefore insist on fully supervised playground and recreational activities.

A thumb-scan security system with CCTV operates at HeadStart. All parents or caregivers must register before picking up students from school.

Punctuality
As classes start at 08:30, students will be expected to arrive between 08:00 and 08:20. The school bell will ring at 08:25, when students will form a line outside their classrooms.

School Meals

HeadStart believes that a healthy diet is the foundation of a robust academic life. We therefore strive to serve natural, low-sugar-and-salt meals with the freshest possible local produce. Students are served lunch at midday followed by healthy mid-afternoon snacks.
