My name is Tim and I'm excited to join the HeadStart community. I've been curious about working overseas (outside of the U.K.) for some time now so I am delighted to be taking up my first post abroad here in Thailand. I started my teaching career a few years after graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree (Genetics) from Leicester University. I gained Qualified Teacher Status in the U.K. through Middlesex University and began teaching a Year 2 class in Finchley, North London. I then worked at a flagship sustainable school in Hertfordshire, where I led English across the school. My third appointment was back in North London which was a promotion to a senior management role and I led Maths across the school. I also took up post as an Assistant Head in this setting. During my twelve years teaching, I have taught each of the primary age groups. I enjoy teaching all subjects and love when children become 'switched on' to a new area of learning and develop their own passion for a subject. My teaching philosophy places a strong value on creating ‘Growth mindset’ classrooms rather than ‘Fixed mindset’ classrooms, where children see failure as an opportunity for growth. In this regard, I have been particularly inspired by Carol Dweck’s research. I enjoy literature, the sciences and sports. I like to play football and tennis, to sail and to climb. I hope to explore the island while I am here and to learn to scuba dive. It is an exciting time to join the school as it charts its future towards excellence and I am delighted to join such a vibrant diverse community with a team of professionals with such high expertise.

Hello, I am Drew, the Deputy Teacher of year six and this is my second year at Headstart. I graduated in 2014, from Benguet State University, Philippines and hold a Bachelors degree of Secondary Education major in Biological Science. In the same year I took and passed the national Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET). The four year undergraduate program in the said University formed the basis of my perseverance towards achieving an in-depth knowledge in the field of Biology. As a part of my degree course I studied various subjects relating to diverse aspects of science. Besides the college academics I was actively involved in the extra-curricular activities. The driving force behind all this was my aim to develop all the facets of my personality and teaching skills. Moreover, for the school year 2014-2015 I have been working as a Teacher in High School Science department. My work has helped me develop a thorough insight in teaching, classroom management, preparing visual aids and the like. Today I perceive that life has been a process of conscious evolution. An integral part of this growth has been the value system imbibed in me by my parents, teachers and mentors and an immense liking for science. Lastly, I believe that proper education will bring us to our dreams. Thank you and I am so excited to work with you all. God bless!

Teacher Introduction

My name is Kelly Wakelin and I will be teaching in Year 6 at Headstart International School. I am from the seaside city of Brighton, England and have been teaching for 7 years. I completed my BA (Honours) Primary Education with History degree in 2009. I gained a 2:1 and also received the ‘Primary Education Prize for Overall Achievement’ upon graduating.  I began what has transpired to be a very successful teaching career at an outstanding school in Kingston, London. I later returned to Brighton where I taught at the school I attended as a child. I was quickly promoted to Head of Year 5 after just 2 terms and held the position for 3 years. I lead a team of 4 teachers and 6 support staff and took responsibility for the academic progress and pastoral well-being of 128 pupils that were in my year group. I also held the position of Teacher Governor.

Highly skilled in developing rich learning experiences that are stimulating, diverse and fun, I excel at instilling confidence in children and the impact of this, in terms of academic progress and attitudes towards learning, has been remarkable across my career. In addition, I strongly advocate that learning should be fun; a culture of engaging, enjoyable and meaningful learning is central to my practice. I believe in the development of the whole child and have confidence in my dynamic and creative approach to teaching. Setting high expectations of all of the children I teach is paramount, as is inspiring a lifelong love of learning. Empathetic, approachable and vibrant, I am extremely passionate about teaching and learning and work hard to ensure my pupils’ learning journeys are both fun and memorable.

I am a keen runner and have participated in three Half Marathons and various charity runs. I am hoping to participate in some running events in Thailand. Cooking specialist dishes from around the globe is a hobby and I am looking forward to learning how to cook traditional Thai food. I also enjoy dance, yoga, keep fit and the arts. I look forward to being an active participant of the vibrant international school community here at Headstart and fulfilling my lifelong dream to teach in Thailand.
