I am very pleased with their academic progress and social development. We all enjoy the lifestyle here. Personally, I feel happy to share this unique experience of living and working on this beautiful island together with my family. The Pre-school programme for your children will focus on creating a step by step, guided, fun, caring and safe learning environment. The children will be motivated to participate in all learning activities through gentle encouragement, which helps them to become more confident and prepares them for their educational journey of discovery and learning. They will learn social skills through play and interacting with other children. Outdoor learning will stimulate their senses, and develop their coordination and awareness of the outside world. The Pre-school programme encourages children to speak basic English and explore basic numeracy through group learning and one to one activities. Communication is key to the success of your child’s education please feel free to contact me with any queries you have about your child’s learning. I look forward to spending time with your children while they learn in Pre-school.

Alma Oliva

Deputy
[email protected]

My name is Alma G. Oliva, born in Masbate Philippines. I am married and blessed with three children. I gained the degree of Bachelor of Arts Major in English at Mountain View, Valencia, Bukidnon, Philippines. My first job was working with the little ones and this inspired me to specialise and teach young children. Singing and playing musical instruments are my favourite hobbies. I believe in a saying that says “In this world nothing is constant, everything keeps on changing” especially in the field of teaching. As a teacher, we should not stop learning; we should make ourselves well-equipped with knowledge, for we will be passing that knowledge on to our students. I served as a Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary teacher in Private schools in the Philippines for 9 years. I first came to Thailand in April 2007. Initially I worked in Bangkok as a Primary and Secondary Music teacher at Sunflower Trilingual School. Then I moved to Phuket and got a job at HeadStart International School as Deputy Teacher in Preschool, Reception and Year 2. I’ve been working in this school for six years. At present, I am working as Deputy Teacher in Preschool with Miss Lisa Parson. I wish that the school will have more success this year and in the years to come with harmonious relationships between teachers and parents, as we work together to help our students to achieve their dreams.

Hi, my name is Novelyn P. Salvan. I graduated from Mountain View college with the degree of Bachelor in Elementary Education Philippines. I have ongoing master of arts in teaching major in Early Childhood Education. It has been a great pleasure to be a part of the preschool team in this institution. And it's a great opportunity to have a direct observation to the young learners learning progress individually. It helps me to understand more the development of each child; physically, mentally, socially and emotionally. As I observe, each child has its own levels of learning progress and that is a challenging work of being a part of a team.

Francesca Massey

Teacher
[email protected]

My name is Francesca Massey. I am from the UK and I grew up in London. I qualified as a Primary School Teacher in July 2013 and I have been teaching in Thailand since qualifying. My BA (Hons) was in Theatre and Performance at Leeds University. However, I later realised that teaching was my real passion and I took a PGCE course at The Institute of Education, London. I fell in love with Thailand when I first came here on holiday in 2009. I always knew I wanted to travel and live abroad for a while and Thailand is a wonderful place to do just that. I regularly like to take trips to visit other islands around Thailand. I have lived in big cities most of my life and Phuket offers something very unique. It has the buzz of a small city combined with the beautiful scenic beaches and hills. I feel honored to be able to live and work here. I believe that education should inspire passion, excitement and a love for learning. Every child is unique and they all have their own interests and skills. Children should be allowed to thrive individually and achieve their own maximum potential. I do believe creativity is just as important as academic achievement. Children learn life skills, develop as individuals and build new ideas through creativity. Children value education more if they are able to enjoy it and are given the means to explore ideas themselves. I am very excited to be going into my third year at HeadStart this academic year and I am looking forward to teaching in Early Years.

Amy Drew

Teacher
[email protected]

My name is Amy Drew, and I’m very excited to be teaching at this amazing new site which is HeadStart. This will be my second year at HeadStart teaching Reception, and I’m very excited. I joined HeadStart last year as a deputy teacher, and had placements in a number of different classes. To me this is the most important year of their education, and I’m looking forwards to working with the children, other teachers, and parents on this fabulous new site, to give them all the opportunities for learning, fun, and happiness I can. My teaching career in Thailand started at an International School in Bangkok linked to a top UK private boarding school. There I held a number of roles: running playgroup; specialising in teaching English as an additional Language (EAL) to Key Stage 1 and Foundation Stage; and finally teaching Pre-school within the Foundation Key Stage. I originally graduated from Loughborough University with a Bachelors of Science however I shall not tell you there year, as that will give my age away!! I’m currently studying for a post graduate qualification in Education with the University of Nottingham to update my skills to the very latest educational theory and practices. Living in Thailand, I’ve enjoyed an education myself from learning the culture and the language of Thailand to meeting so many experienced teachers at HeadStart with vast knowledge from teaching around the world. I moved to Thailand with my husband, the Director of Studies, and spent 2 years in the city of smiles, Bangkok, enjoying the vibrancy of the city, before moving to Phuket a year ago, away from the hustle and bustle to the calm and leafy inner island, the tropical beaches, and colourful underwater activity that I see when Scuba Diving. My passion is for teaching the younger children, the impact we as teachers at this stage have on their learning is profound and the day to day changes that we are able to see are incredible. I feel a huge responsibility to provide solid ‘foundations’ to the children’s education that their teachers from KS1 to University can build upon.

Myriam Adams

Music Teacher
[email protected]

My name is Astrid Myriam Adams and I’m originally from Switzerland. From a young age I had the privilege of attending schools where singing and music were widely practiced and held an important place in the curriculum. As a teenager I learned to play guitar as accompaniment to contemporary songs. After moving eastward and experiencing the delightful Thai culture in Bangkok for some years, I relocated to the Middle East. There I participated in regional music festivals and concerts, performing as a singer and back-up vocalist. In cooperation with local NGOs, my husband and I worked to bring meaningful entertainment to underprivileged children. The Ministry of Education in Damascus sponsored our team to create and perform a children’s theatre/music play called Clown Treasures. This presentation was also adopted by FIRDOS as a mobile show in order to bring live performances to children in remote villages. I always believed that music is a powerful healer. As part of BASMA’s psychological relief program, I contributed engaging musical activities at a large children’s hospital ward for five years and was instrumental in introducing TRAP, The Rhythmic Arts Project, to the region. In 2012, I trained as a facilitator of Music Together, an early childhood music & movement program, and launched weekly parent/child classes, popular with 75 attending expat families, at Enana Ballet Academy and Doha Int’l School in Qatar for a period of two years. Believing that all children are musical, I have trained in the Kodaly method of teaching music for Foundation Stages and also hold a Child Development certificate from ncfe in the UK. In the past two years, I have enjoyed making music accessible and a joyful experience to young children, and I look forward to continue inspiring a love of singing through all means available, which are many at Headstart’s new campus.

Fiona Whittaker

P.E. Teacher
[email protected]

I have been involved in education for over twenty years and it is with great excitement that I am part of the HeadStart team at this fantastic new campus. Over the years I have been fortunate to have experienced a wide variety of educational establishments both in the United Kingdom and in Hong Kong. My initial teaching was at Secondary level where I quickly developed to become Head of Girls PE and then moved to Hong Kong where I was instrumental with the designing of the Sports Department within the construction of a newly purpose built school. Teaching in such a diverse multicultural environment was certainly one of the highlights of my career. Upon my return to the United Kingdom I continued in Secondary Education until the birth of my daughter. I took five years out of education in order to establish the fundamentals of pre-school education with my daughter at home: incorporating art; music; dance; reading; playing; singing and many other stimulating activities which ensured she was ready for mainstream schooling at the age of five years. After this most rewarding time of my life I was then ready to return to teaching; but this time at Primary level. I then taught for thirteen years at an Independent Preparatory School in the United Kingdom, teaching PE from Reception to Year 8. I believe that a healthy body leads to a healthy mind. I always promote active involvement from every child and believe that regardless of sporting ability every child can enjoy and have a positive attitude to sport, health and fitness, thus promoting the “Sport for All” policy; ensuring a lifelong love of sport and physical activity. Lessons must be fun and enjoyable so that children learn and develop. Having a Secondary specialist background in PE ensures high expectations and learning above the norm; the less able are able to enjoy, grow in confidence and improve their ability. I believe that all children should be given the opportunity to reach their full potential and try to incorporate this idea when teaching by creating a stimulating and active environment. To perform well the children need to be organised and dedicated, this is important not just in their PE but also to prepare them for their everyday school life; being competitive is a part of PE and they need to understand how to deal with this inside and outside of school.
