Parenting Tip “The Sensitive Child” by Karen Beardsley, Certified Occupational Therapist working in Phuket

When someone thinks about a child being “sensitive’, most people immediately think of the **emotional component, **but in reality our sensitivities cover a much broader range. In fact, certain social and/or emotional behaviors we might observe in a child, can actually be a result or by product of some other underlying sensory processing sensitivity.

Drama Update by Jackie Feliciano, Music Teacher

Greetings from Mr. Scrooge!

Our rehearsals are well under way with a very eager and talented cast and production team. Our Christmas musical is scheduled for December 11th. With the start of the 2nd half of term 1, we are kicking it into 4th gear and preparing for an exciting month ahead. Remember to study your lines and music at home, 1st run through is just around the corner! Parents of cast members, please be aware that every rehearsal counts. Absences are not permitted at this point, unless it’s an emergency. In that case, please contact Ms. Jackie or Mr. Joel to let us know. We all want the show to be a success and we are counting on your support. Looking forward to our last month of rehearsals and hope you enjoy our adaptation of A Christmas Carol.

Year 2A Geography Project by Lindsay Benner, Year 2A teacher

Year 2A have been learning about maps, symbols and land forms in Geography. We made our own islands with salt dough and included a compass rose, legend and lots of different land forms.

Year 2B read Poetry by Samantha Dear Year 2B teacher

Superhero Story Competition in Year 5 by Heidi St. Hill, Year 5A teacher

After several weeks of story drafting, writing and editing, the students in my English class have produced amazing stories of superheroes who triumphed over evil villains. The students competed to write the best superhero story and the winner is………Mimi Ngernanek!

There were some other amazing stories worthy of on honourable mention: Sasha Syrkina, Vivek Khanal and Dasha Volkova.

I was amazed at the creativity demonstrated by all the student’s stories. They worked incredibly hard. Here they are with their finished stories. Please take a moment to read the winning story of “Icicle Girl and the Lost Rocket Shoe.”

Year 5 Learning Fractions by Katie Axford, Year 5A teacher

In Year 5 students have just started learning about fractions in math class. Each student was given a fraction and asked to create a “Think Board” where they had to draw their fraction in different ways, write it in words and symbols and make it using coloured paper and straws. Students then shared their finished product with the class. It certainly was a fun, enjoyable and challenging math task!

Secondary Student of the Month by Mark Goodman, Head of Secondary

HeadStart are very pleased to announce this month’s Student of the Month achievers. Student of the month is awarded each month by the teachers for students who have shown the most improvement, the most originality or the most effort.

Liberal Arts Presentation by Paul Kennedy, Pastoral Care

On the 7th of November, Mr Shawn Moore from Bard College in Beijing is delivering a presentation on Liberal Arts. He will also be giving advice to the Year 10 & 11 students on college admission processes. If you are interested in attending the presentation it will begin at 2.15pm in the School library. The presentation is due to last no more than 1 hour.

Parents Weekly Meeting by Khru Sue, Lead Thai Teacher

We would like to invite new parents to HeadStart to a meeting on Tuesday the 4th November at 8:30-9:30 am in the library. There will be a presentation about The Cambridge curriculum from the Thai management team. We look forward to seeing you in this meeting.

Sports News

British International School of Phuket - 7 a side Football Tournament News

HeadStart was initially invited by BIS to play in the 7-a-Side Football Tournament at the beginning of the academic school year, August 2014. At this time parents with children in the Football program would have received an e mail posing the question whether or not you would be interested in sending your child to this event. Due to an enthusiastic but slow response we were able to register only 3 teams for this tournament: Under 11, Under 13 and Over 15. We will register a team for each age group for the 2015 tournament but places will not be guaranteed.

We appreciate that this has caused considerable disappointment for the younger players who were looking forward to playing in this tournament.

20 HeadStart players registered for the Under 11 team and we have selected 10 players for this 7 a side tournament. Therefore the coaches found it best to do a small performance trial during practice last Wednesday. By following a simple step by step trial Coach JR was able to determine which players would be able to best represent HeadStart in this upcoming competition. Please understand that this selection does not affect your child’s opportunities to play in future tournaments.

Please rest assured that every effort is being made to seek out opportunities for all our football players to play and I will soon be announcing the next matches.

Please also note that the 1,600 Baht is a fee charged by BIS for this event. Should you have paid this amount to accounting but will not be attending please contact Mai in accounting.

Under 13 Football Team Events by Tladi Small, Head of P.E.*** ***

Wednesday, 29th October, 2014

The U13 team will play a practice game at Headstart in preparation for the upcoming tournament at BIS.

The game will start at 4:00 pm and finish at 5:00 pm. Players don’t need to wear a HeadStart football kit.

Friday, 7th November, 2014

British International School of Phuket - 7 a side Football Tournament.

The team will play in the BISP 7 a side Football tournament. Details are below:

Arrive at BISP gate 1 at 6:45 am for opening ceremony. Games will finish by 3:30 pm.

Lunch is provided by BISP tournament and there will be snacks for sale.

Saturday 8th November

Depending on the team’s performance they could kick off anytime from 8:30am to 10:30am.

We will know this after Friday’s games. The tournament finishes at 2:30pm (kick off time of the final)

Lunch is provided by BISP. There is BBQ at 5:00 pm for players and coaches at BISP.

The Over 15 team will play at the BISP 7 a side Football tournament. Details are below:

Arrival at BISP gate 1: 06:45 am

Games will finish by 2:00 p.m. A bus will return to school at this time.

Note: Lunch is provided by BISP and there will be snacks for sale.

Saturday, 8th November, 2014

As part of the Challenge Laguna Phuket Tri-Fest 2014 which will attract about 2000 adult participants, the Thanyapura Junior Challenge will be hosted by Thanyapura Phuket.

Age Groups

Junior (6, 7-8 yrs): Swim 50m + Bike 3km + Run 500m

Intermediate (9-10, 10-12 yrs): Swim150m + Bike 6km+ Run 1500m

Senior (13-14, 15-18 yrs): Swim 300m + Bike12km + Run 3000m

Entry Fees:

Thanyapura Member: 1200 Thai baht

General Public: 1500 Thai baht

Relay Teams: 2700 Thai baht (900 baht x 3 athletes)

การซ้อมละครเริ่มต้นไปได้ราบรื่นดี เรามีทีมงานและนักแสดงที่เก่งและกระตือรือร้นมาก ละครเพลงสำหรับเทศกาล คริสมาสต์ ชุดนี้กำหนดจะแสดงในวันที่ 11 ธันวาคม ซึ่งได้เริ่มเตรียมงานกันมาตั้งแต่ครึ่งเทอมหลังของเทอมที่1 ทีมงานเราก็เร่งกันเต็มที่ เพื่อเตรียมพร้อมสำหรับความตื่นเต้นในตลอดทั้งเดือนพฤศจิกายนนี้ ขอให้ทุกคนพยายามกลับไปหัดท่องบทพูดและเพลงของตนที่บ้าน เพราะอีกไม่นาน เราก็จะได้มาลองซ้อมร่วมกันตลอดทั้งเรื่องเลย สำหรับผู้ปกครองของนักแสดง ขอให้ท่านตระหนักถึงความสำคัญและจำเป็นอย่างยิ่งในการมาซ้อมละครทุกครั้ง ถึงจุดนี้แล้วจะขาดซ้อมไม่ได้เลย ยกเว้นเสียแต่ว่าจะมีเหตุฉุกเฉินจริงๆเท่านั้น ซึ่งจะต้องแจ้งให้ Ms. Jackie หรือ Mr. Joel ทราบ พวกเราทุกคนต้องการให้ละครชุดนี้ประสบความสำเร็จด้วยดี จึงขอให้ทุกๆท่านให้ความสนับสนุนอย่างเต็มที่ เราจะได้ซ้อมกันเป็นเดือนสุดท้ายแล้ว และหวังว่าพวกท่านจะสนุกเพลิดเพลินกับละครเพลงชุดนี้

หลังจากได้ร่างเรื่อง เขียนเรื่อง และแก้ไข กันมาหลายสัปดาห์ แล้ว นักเรียนก็ได้ส่งงานเข้าประกวด เป็นเรื่องที่เกี่ยวกับพระเอกที่เก่ง ปราบผู้ร้ายได้ราบคาบ เรื่องที่ชนะเลิศเขียนโดย……..Mimi Ngernanek! และก็ยังมีอีกหลายคนที่เขียนได้ดีมาก คือ : Sasha Syrkina, Vivek Khanal และ Dasha Volkova.

ดิฉันประทับใจกับความคิดสร้างสรรค์ที่นักเรียนได้ถ่ายทอดออกมาเป็นเรื่องเหล่านี้ พวกเค้าทุ่มเทให้กับงานชิ้นนี้มาก ลองอ่านดูนะคะ เรื่องที่ชนะการประกวดค่ะ คือ “Icicle Girl and the Lost Rocket Shoe.”

นักเรียนชั้น Year 5 ได้เริ่มเรียนเรื่องเศษส่วนในวิชาคณิตศาสตร์ ครูให้จำนวนเศษส่วน แก่นักเรียนแต่ละคนไป แล้วให้ทุกคนสรุปเรื่องเศษส่วนออกมาเป็นรูปแบบในหลายๆแบบ เขียนเป็นคำ เป็นสัญลักษณ์ โดยใช้กระดาษสีและหลอดเป็นอุปกรณ์ แล้วนักเรียนก็เอาผลงานออกมาแสดงให้เพื่อนๆได้ชม เป็นชิ้นงานทางคณิตศาสตร์ที่ทำกันด้วยความสนุกและท้าทายมาก

ขอเรียนเชิญท่านที่เป็นผู้ปกครองใหม่ เข้าร่วมประชุมผู้ปกครองไทยประจำสัปดาห์ ที่ห้องสมุด ในวันอังคารที่ 3 พฤศจิกายน เวลา 08.30 น. - 09.30 น. จะนำเสนอเรื่องหลักสูตรการเรียนการสอนของมหาวิทยาลัย Cambridge

** แจ้งข่าวรายการแข่งฟุตบอล ** British International School of Phuket - 7 a side Football Tournament News

** ในตอนแรก ช่วงเริ่มปีการศึกษา ในเดือนสิงหาคม ทางโรงเรียนของเราได้รับเชิญจากทางโรงเรียน** BIS ให้ส่งทีมเข้าร่วมการแข่งขันฟุตบอลประเภท 7 คน ซึ่งตอนนั้นท่านผู้ปกครองของนักเรียนที่อยู่ในทีมฟุตบอล คงได้รับอีเมลแจ้งจากทางโรงเรียนแล้วว่าท่านสนใจจะส่งบุตรหลานเข้าร่วมการแข่งขัน แม้ว่าจะมีผู้สนใจหลายท่านแต่เนื่องจากได้รับคำตอบกลับมาล่าช้าเกินกำหนดเป็นส่วนใหญ่ ทางโรงเรียนจึงรวบรวมรายชื่อที่จะส่งเข้าร่วมแข่งขันได้ 3 ทีม คือรุ่นอายุไม่เกิน 11ปี รุ่นอายุไม่เกิน 13ปี และรุ่นอายุมากกว่า 15ปี ซึ่งทางเราได้ลงทะเบียนแล้วรุ่นละ 1 ทีม เราเข้าใจว่ากลุ่มเด็กเล็กรู้สึกผิดหวัง ที่ไม่ได้มีโอกาสเข้าร่วมในรายการแข่งขันครั้งนี้

ในรุ่นอายุไม่เกิน 11ปี ซึ่งจำกัดจำนวนผู้เล่นไว้แค่ 10 คน แต่เนื่องจากมีผู้ลงทะเบียนไว้ถึง 20คน ดังนั้นทางโค้ชจึงเห็นสมควรให้มีการคัดตัวผู้เล่นในช่วงเวลาฝึกซ้อมเมื่อวันพุธที่ผ่านมา หลังจากเสร็จขั้นตอนทั้งหมด โค้ชเจอาร์ ก็ได้ตัดสินใจเลือกตัวนักกีฬาที่จะเป็นตัวแทนของโรงเรียนในการแข่งขันรายการนี้ โปรดทราบไว้ว่าการคัดเลือกตัวผู้เล่นครั้งนี้เฉพาะการแข่งขันครั้งนี้เท่านั้น มิได้มีผลต่อการเข้าร่วมการแข่งขันในรายการอื่นๆ **

โปรดทราบว่าทางโรงเรียน จะพยายามจัดส่งนักกีฬาทุกๆคนให้ได้มีโอกาสเข้าร่วมการแข่งขันในอนาคต ซึ่งจะแจ้งให้ทราบ **
