Mom’s Night Out
On the 10th of February 50 moms showed up dressed beautifully for our first Mom’s Night Out of the year. Skye Lake Club were excellent hosts: thank you to Khun Best and Khun Able! Everyone enjoyed an evening of drinks and tapas, a live DJ, some games but most of all the chance to mingle and meet new friends. Our very own Veronica Barboza brought the house down with her renditions of songs from Shakira. She in turn was awarded ‘Best Voice’ of the evening and received a gift voucher worth 2,000 Baht that she can use at Skye Lake Club. All of the women that received the prizes are excited to use the vouchers. Yearbook Photo Shoot
From the 6th to the 9th of March we will be running the Yearbook photo shoot. Please make sure your child is in school on that day, wearing the correct uniform with hair is tidy. Please note if they miss their slot, they will not appear in their class photo. Attached is the schedule for you to prepare for your child’s photo shoot.
Meeting Invitation
Year 6 parents are invited to a meeting on the 1st of March at 8:15-9:15 am in the Secondary Hall. The topic of discussion will be Cambridge Checkpoint examinations. The presentation will be made in English and Thai.
Upcoming English and Humanities Faculty Week
27th of February to the 3rd of March

To launch our return to school after the break we will be celebrating English and Humanities subjects through our Faculty Week. We will begin our Faculty Week with an assembly when our students will lead by performing some skits from famous historical moments and texts, enjoy the show! Throughout the week there will also be a number of events for students to take part in:

There will be a Book Fair featuring books from Asia Books that will coincide with World Book Day.

Look out for the giant Scrabble board which will appear at the start of the week in the Atrium and either join in or come to support your House members use their word power, see the timetable for details of days of the week for your Year Group;

Keep an eye out for the Geography Scavenger Hunt;

Come and join Mr Osborne every break for ‘Just a Minute’ and/ or Taboo fun at the top of the Secondary ramp;

Join Ms Milner and the crowd and get spooked by ‘Horror Stories by the Fire’ on Wednesday lunchtime in the Atrium;

Join the poets at Poet’s Corner on Thursday lunchtime to listen to and recreate Renaissance love poetry;

Find out how much you know about Phuket’s history, test your knowledge of historical faces , famous landmarks and countries through taking part in the the Humanities quiz and try out the competitions outside the History and Geography rooms;

Primary students will be exploring Roald Dahl stories in lessons during the week;
-
We hope all of you will have a go at the Roald Dahl quiz and see how much you know about one of our favourite writers and his books;
Finally, we will end the week on a booky note, on Friday come dressed up as your favourite character from a story, poem, play; or, if you prefer come as a famous historical figure. Primary students are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite character from any one of Roald Dahl’s stories.
We look forward to celebrating the world of English and Humanities with you when we return to school!
Maths Faculty Week Report 2017

Atrium Games
Giant ‘Noughts and Crosses’ and ‘Four in a Row’ in the Atrium drew in the crowds as students worked out the best strategies to win these age-old games.
Pi Challenge
This Year Artem broke the Pi Memory Game record by remembering 95 digits but then Nutcha smashed her own record by remembering an incredible 127 digits!
Maths House Challenge
In the Sports Hall students saw their houses vying for first place in a close run competition full of fun challenges.
Origami
Students in Primary and Secondary learnt Origami skills at breaks and lunchtimes creating animals, aeroplanes and the Platonic solids.
Maths VAP club
On discovering the school used 72,995 pieces of paper in January alone we set to work investigating and calculating what this meant in terms of scale and impact to support the Eco-committee.
Saturday Thai Culture Camp News

The Early Years to Year 1 students learned about Phuket. We did lots of activities such as quizzes about Phuket, tasting traditional Phuket noodles and making a green snakes made out of coconut leaves.
The Year 2-4 students learned about the history of Phuket, local attractions and food.
Students in Year 5-7 learned about the South of Thailand: it’s Geography, tourist attractions, local food and traditions.
House News

As we wrap up yet another fantastic half term of House competitions, I am very happy with everyone’s recent efforts in the ‘Weigh your Waste’ competition. This weeks winners were the Blue Tigers who only wasted a record breaking 3.5kg of food! I’m delighted to announce that the Tigers were also our weekly House Quiz winners. This is fantastic news, as the Tigers need to continue to push themselves up from 4th place. Keep going Tigers! Keep watching this space for some VERY EXCITING House news coming directly after half term break!
Foundation News
Cookies and Pancakes
Reception had a flipping fantastic time cooking pancakes on pancake day, and heart shaped cookies on Valentines day. When we made pancakes we mixed in eggs and milk into flour, then Miss Amy & Miss Danielle poured the mixture into a pan, and we watched it sizzle. The talented teachers even tried to flip them in the air! Then we had a big picnic and ate them with honey, lime juice and sugar. Some of us thought they were yummy, but some of us thought that the ones that Chef cooks tasted a bit better! We hope our Mummies and Daddies like the cookies that we made them. Ms Amy and Ms Danielle
Maths Faculty Week for the little ones was a busy week!

We estimated, then measured the Foundation playground. Did you know it’s exactly 14 bricks wide!

We played giant tic-tac-toe!

We enjoyed taking turns counting while we played snakes and ladders and dominoes.

We practiced our number recognition playing Bingo.

Some of us even did a very clever adding board game.
Primary News
We had great fun in Year 2 yellow playing treasure hunt. We had to find and solve mathematical challenges hidden around the playground in order to decode the secret word!
Year 4 were busy doing a Measurement Scavenger Hunt on the playground this week.
Secondary News

During this week Year 11 will be handing in there applications for Sixth Form.
Year 9 will be completing their options choices form. Thank you to Year 9 parents for their attendance and support at the Year 9 parents and options evening. We had an excellent turn out.
Outbound Field Trips: Medical Forms
Please ensure your child fills in the ‘Medical History’ form that has been handed to the students if they are going on the Outbound Field Trip in April. The forms should then be returned to the homeroom teachers.
Year 12 and 13 Mock Exams
After half term Year 12 and 13 will being there Mock Examinations starting from the 27th of February in the Secondary Hall.

Special Visitor to the Dance Academy
The HeadStart Dance performing group had a special visitor for 2 weeks. Marie Pierrat is a ballet and contemporary dance teacher who used to dance for the well-known dance company ‘Maurice Béjart Ballet Lausanne’ from Switzerland. Marie was helping the students to get them technically ready and to help to finish with the choreography for the KPIS Dance Challenge 2017 that will happen next week on Friday 24th in Bangkok. Sports Department News

From the 27th February 2017 until the 7th April (Term 2.2), all secondary students from year 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11, must bring in their normal P.E. Kit and Swimming Kit for all their timetabled P.E. lessons.This is in order that the PE department can be flexible in delivery of the curriculum for the next half term, so we can provide opportunities for students to be involved in preparations for Sports Day and upcoming swimming competitions. Please can you also remind\support your child\ward to be well prepared for their P.E. and after school activities, by ensuring they bring the following to school on days they have physical activities;
A cap, sun lotion, water bottle, hair band to tie hair back, thin light weight towel for showering after lessons and if they use deodorant this must be in the form of a roll on (not an aerosol, as this can affect others in a confined space)
In addition to the above, for swimming all students should bring goggles and if a student’s hair is long enough to cover their eyes when it gets wet, they must have a swim hat. Students must wear a competition style swimming costume in order to gain maximum benefit from their time in the water and for girls their costumes should be of a suitable one piece variety (no bikinis). Students are allowed to wear a rash shirt over the top of their costume, but please note this will cause more drag in the water and therefore slow the progress students might make
I would strongly recommend all students taking a quick shower after their lessons and changing their socks and underwear. This is in order to prevent fungal conditions developing on their feet, under their arms and between their legs. Fungal infections are rife in the tropics and some can be very harmful and most are incredibly difficult to successfully treat, the best way of avoiding them is to take away the environment in which they thrive (warm, moist unwashed parts of the body). I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all parents/guardians and their children/wards for the warm welcome I have received here at HeadStart. I look forward to working with you and most importantly your children/wards over the coming years in order to further improve the opportunities for all to take part in physical activity and for those who want to, to excel.

Swimming News–Aqua Panthers Assemble
Saturday we have 47 of our swimmers attending the Thanyapura Pentathlon! The competition starts at 8:00 am and is expected to finish by 12:00. Parents should organise their own transportation. See you there!
The Reception students are having fun and working hard to get ready for their Sports Day on the 30th of March.
