HeadStart wishes our leaving Year 11 class a fond farewell!

At the Year 11 Graduation Ceremony that took place on the 30th of June at the Blue Elephant, Mr Edouard, CEO of HeadStart, gave a compelling speech on what success and failure means to inspire the students to take risks and fulfil their dreams.

“The difference between success and failure is making the conscious decision to not allow a failure to defeat you once and for all, leaving you behind in a broken down state of mind for the rest of your life but rather to pat yourself on the back for not having squandered an opportunity, for having tried, for having given your best and for having gained some important experiences that could become very valuable in your future.

The only way to avoid any kinds of failures entirely would be by not even trying, which might as well be comparable with not having lived at all. The attempt to avoid failure down to the ground would cause the biggest failures of all, the irreversible mistake of not having tried at all.

Here are some famous failures: Ludwig van Beethoven was told that he was hopeless as a composer and started losing his hearing in 1796, but continued to compose masterpieces Abraham Lincoln lost his job (1832), failed in business (1833) and was defeated in eight elections (1838 – 1858) Walt Disney was fired, as his boss found he “lacked imagination”. Later, MGM studios told him that the idea of Mickey Mouse would not work; a giant mouse would scare women. John Grisham was rejected by twelve publishing houses and sixteen agents, before his first novel was accepted. Grisham is nowadays a best selling novelist. Steven Spielberg was placed in a class for learning-disabled children, before he dropped out of school forever The Beatles were turned down by their recording company telling them that “ guitar music is on it’s way out”. Never Give Up After all, only the failures these successful people had to experience and the mistakes they made in their lives allowed them to become the geniuses, inventors and idols they have become. Without their failures they wouldn’t have become the person they are nowadays acknowledged as. Those that never failed in life are the ones that no one remembers of today, the ones that never won as they never tried.

I could go on and tell you about all the defeats and failures in my life that I can remember, whenever I was turned down, ignored, knocked down on the ground, got dumped, failed at work, saw my plans fail or messed up with my duties, but that would increase the word-count and length of this speech into the infinite.

Nevertheless, every one of the defeats I have experienced along the way has helped me to understand and accept failure as an inevitable part of my life. It helped me to see more opportunities than before, as I simply had ignored many of them because I estimated them as too risky or to be doomed to fail. It helped me to focus my attention on the things I enjoyed doing – in the one area I knew I belonged. If everything I did had turned out as a success, I would not have discovered what I truly loved to do and might have awoken one day in a life where I didn’t belong with a job that didn’t fulfil me.

I would like to share a brilliant poem about success and failure with you:

When things go wrong as they sometimes will; When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill When the funds are low, and the debts are high And you want to smile, but have to sigh; When care is pressing you down a bit- Rest if you must, but do not quit.

Success is failure turned inside out; The silver tint of the clouds of doubt; And you can never tell how close you are It may be near when it seems so far; So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit- It’s when things go wrong that you must not quit.

In closing, I would like to express my own idea of success. I consider myself to be successful because I am able to spend my life doing something which I love. Over the last 15 years I have been able spend my time together with my loving and beautiful wife, raising and education my own children as well as other’s children through establishing HeadStart. Combining my personal strengths and passion as an educator along with my personal life has been the secret to my success as it has allowed me to channel all of my time, energy and concentration into one area.

As a recipe for success I would encourage you to do the following.

• Know you strengths and weaknesses and develop a high level of self –discipline.

• Set yourself ambitious and definite goals and targets.

• Be physically, mentally and emotionally prepared to take advantage of opportunities which arise which will enable you to maximise your strengths to help you achieve your goals.

• Be fiercely passionate and inspired and believe that you can and will succeed.

Congratulations Year 11

On Monday the 30th of June HeadStart proudly hosted the Year 11 graduation party attended by Year 10 and Year 11 students and parents at the spectacular Blue Elephant restaurant. All the students received special HeadStart Year 11 certificates of completion. All teachers, staff and students wish the graduating Year 11 class of 2014 the best of luck for their future. ​HeadStart currently has up to Year 11 but plan to add a Year 12 and 13 in the new school campus.

Attached are the slides of the students, what they are doing, where they are going and upon Jazon’s request they​ have also included in the slide what they think determines happiness and success.

Primary News!

As the school year comes to a close, our minds and hearts are filled to the brim. It’s been a great year! Together we’ve learned much and shared experiences that will long remain with us in the years to come. It is a time to celebrate with our students for all they have accomplished and to acknowledge our staff whose passion makes this school into the successful learning environment for all our students. It is a time to review all of the ways in which we have been successful and a time to begin making plans to build on that success in new ways that will positively shape our future.

So many fantastic events have made this year extraordinary! I thoroughly enjoyed the assemblies prepared by students and teachers. Our End of Year Music and Arts Appreciation Day was according to some ‘the best show they’ve ever seen’! We couldn’t have done this without the help and support of so many of you, teachers, admin, kitchen staff, maintenance staff and you, the parents, thank you! To our students, I would like to say, “thank you” for another amazing year. My hope is that the light within each of you will continue to shine brightly. To those of you who are leaving us for new places and adventures, we wish you all the best. Congratulations to our very capable Year 6 students, who are onto a new stage in their academic career! I wish all of our families a safe, restful and wonder-filled summer vacation!

The Way I See It… by Richard Thézé

I have worked for a number of different schools in a number of different countries during my career as a teacher and I very much enjoyed working with all the children in all of those schools even though some of them really were not very good places to work. HeadStart International School, on the other hand, has been one of the best, if not the best school for which I have worked and it set me thinking about what really makes our school a good school.

Academically, the vast majority of our students are achieving at least in line with what would be expected of the average child in a school in the UK. Some of our students are performing well above the average expected. This is remarkable given that very many of our students are learning through the medium of their second and sometimes third languages. It is all the more remarkable when you realise that many of our students come to us with little or no past experience of the English language.

Notwithstanding our academic achievements, I believe the hallmarks of a good school go much deeper. A good school is a consistently competitive yet caring community that treats all members of that community fairly and equally. It offers a broad and challenging curriculum to stimulate intellectual and universal curiosity among its students. It is a school in which there is ease of communication, between all its elements. It has the confidence both to change through time in response to external and self-criticism and to celebrate its successes.

Andrew Adonis, a reformer, writer and Labour peer who was Minister for Schools under the Tony Blair and Gordon Brown administration in the UK, would say that the three qualities essential to a good school are: an ethos of high expectation; teachers who are ambitious for their students and a vibrant extra-curricular programme. Similarly, the authors of the McKinsey study: How the world’s most improved school systems keep getting better (2010) are agreed that a successful school needs a clear ethos, good leadership, effective governance and, first and last, excellent teachers.

HeadStart International School is a school in which your child is an individual and one in which the pastoral care of each individual student matters. Moreover, it is a school which takes as much pride in the C grades honestly worked for as it does in the achievements of its top scholars. We constantly push our students to do better rather than taking unearned credit for the achievements of children who could have achieved all they do whether at this school or not.

We are a school that respects Thai as well as other important traditions and we consistently encourage our students to engage in thinking beyond their exam-based syllabuses. Moreover, we have schemes to encourage reading in both Thai and English, particularly among our teenage boys. Through regular assemblies and on special days, we celebrate our students’ successes, thereby taking due time to reflect on what has been achieved by individuals. We also understand that learning goes on in and beyond the classroom and our extra-curricular programme, including elements such as the Duke of Edinburgh International Award, help to integrate all aspects of what a good school should offer its students.

Good schools are dedicated to academic excellence which requires a commitment to the ‘primacy of the classroom’. It is of fundamental importance that a good school inculcates in its students, both an ability to learn and a love of learning as lessons for life. At HeadStart, we recognise that the extent to which all the students fulfil their potential owes everything to how good the teaching is which is why we sought the recent inspection and accreditation of our school by the Centre for British Teacher (CfBT) and the Office for National Education Standards and Quality Assessment (ONESQA).

As an educational institution, we are interested in what we can do to turn children into young adults who will contribute usefully to the community. As our students grow older, we encourage them to begin to take responsibility for their decisions and actions and we support this through institutions such as prefects, the Head Boy and Head Girl positions as well as the student council. We want to trust our students not to have to be treated as children. We have worked hard to develop our careers department, attuned to the changing demands of competitive universities and of the workplace.

Perhaps most importantly, we recognise the important and direct role that parents have to play and we strive to create an ease of communication not only between students and teachers, but between teachers and parents, and between the school and its wider community.

งานเลี้ยงอำลารุ่นพี่ปี11 ที่ร้านBlue Elephant Restaurantเมื่อวันที่ 30 มิถุนายน ที่ผ่านมานี้ คุณJazonได้ให้โอวาทที่จับใจมาก เรื่องให้ถือเอาความล้มเหลวมาเป็นบันไดแห่งความสำเร็จ

ความแตกต่างระหว่างความล้มเหลวและความสำเร็จ.. คือเมื่อใดที่ประสพกับความล้มเหลว ก็ขอให้เรามีสติ.. รู้ตัว รู้เท่าทันอารมณ์ที่เกิดขึ้น ไม่ยอมให้อารมณ์ผิดหวังเสียใจเหล่านั้น มาทำให้เราต้องท้อแท้ ยอมแพ้ไปตลอดชีวิต .. ควรที่จะให้อภัยและบอกตนเอง ว่าเราจะพยายามอย่างที่สุดที่จะเปลี่ยนวิกฤติให้เป็นโอกาส ให้ได้

ผู้ที่ไม่เคยประสพความล้มเหลวเลย ก็คือผู้ที่ไม่กล้าที่ทำอะไรเลย เปรียบเสมือนผู้ที่มีชีวิตอยู่อย่างไร้จิตวิญญาณ

เหล่าบุคคลที่เป็นอัจฉริยะบ้าง นักประดิษฐ์คิดค้นบ้าง หรือบุคคลที่ผู้คนชื่นชอบ ได้จุดประกายความสำเร็จในอนาคต ของตน จากความล้มเหลวและผิดพลาดต่างๆในอดีต คนที่ไม่เคยล้มเหลวเลยในชีวิตก็คือคนที่ไม่มีใครรู้จักหรือจดจำ และ ความพยายามอยู่ที่ไหน..ความสำเร็จก็ย่อมอยู่ที่นั่น

ถ้าผมจะคงเล่าต่อๆไปเรื่องราวความล้มเหลวในชีวิตของผม ก็คงต้องเล่ากันอีกนาน… แต่อย่างไรก็ตาม ความล้มเหลวที่ผ่านเข้ามานั้น เป็นสิ่งที่หลีกเลี่ยงไม่ได้ เราก็ยอมรับมันว่านั่นคือส่วนหนึ่งของชีวิตแถมยังมองผ่านเข้าไปอุปสรรคเหล่านี้อย่างชัดเจนว่า มีโอกาสที่รอคอยเราอยู่ ซึ่งแต่ก่อนนั้นผมเคยมองข้ามโอกาสเหล่านี้ไป เพราะประมาณการณ์ผิดว่า มันเสี่ยงเกินไป ไม่น่าจะได้ผล มันทำให้ผมทุ่มเทให้ความสนใจกับงานที่ผมรักและมีความสุขกับมัน จะเห็นว่าหากผมประสพความสำเร็จในทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างที่ผมทำ ผมก็ไม่มีทางค้นพบตนเองได้เลย และวันหนึ่งผมอาจตื่นขึ้นมาแล้วพบว่า ผมซังกะตายทำงานไปวันๆ ผมขอนำบทกวี เรื่องความล้มเหลวและสำเร็จ มากล่าวให้ฟัง…..คนผ่านอุปสรรค..จึงจะเป็นยอดคน เหนื่อยนักก็พักบ้าง และอย่าท้อ

บทสรุป.. ยกตัวอย่างชีวิตของผม ผมถือว่าผมประสพความสำเร็จ วัดได้จากการที่ผมสามารถที่จะดำเนินชีวิตอย่างมีความสุข ในตลอด 15 ปีที่ผ่านมานี้ ผมอยู่กับภรรยาแสนสวยที่ผมรัก และเราช่วยกันเลี้ยงดูและให้การศึกษาที่ดีให้กับลูกๆของเรา พร้อมๆกับ นักเรียนอื่นที่โรงเรียน HeadStartแห่งนี้ ที่ผมได้ผสมผสานศักยภาพและอุดมการณ์ของผมเข้าด้วยกันแล้วตั้งใจทำในสิ่งที่ผมรักอย่างไม่ย่อท้อเลย และสิ่งนี้คือเคล็ดลับแห่งความสำเร็จของผม

As a recipe for success I would encourage you to do the following.**

• รู้จักตัวเองว่ามีจุดอ่อนและจุดแข็ง ด้านใดบ้าง และพัฒนาฝึกตนให้มีวินัยต่อตนเอง

• ตั้งเป้าหมายของชีวิต และตั้งความปรารถนาอย่าแรงกล้า ที่จะพิชิตเป้าหมายนั้น

• เตรียมร่างกาย จิตใจและทางอารมณ์ ให้พร้อมเมื่อโอกาสมาถึงตัว เราก็จะได้ทำอย่างเต็มที่

• กระตือรือร้น และผลักดันตนเอง เชื่อว่าไม่มีอะไรทีเราจะทำไม่ได้

ขอแสดงความยินดีกับรุ่นพี่ ปี 11 ที่สำเร็จการศึกษา

เมื่อวันที่30 มิถุนายนที่ผ่านมานี้ ทางโรงเรียนมีความภาคภูมิใจที่ได้เป็นเจ้าภาพเลี้ยงฉลองการจบการศึกษา ที่ร้านอาหารชั้นนำ Blue Elephantrestaurantให้รุ่นพี่ปี11 ซึ่งรุ่นน้องปี10 ก็ได้มาร่วมงานแสดงความยินดีด้วยโรงเรียนได้มอบใบประกาศนียบัตรจบการศึกษาให้แก่นักเรียนปี11 ทุกๆคนร่วมอวยพรให้นักเรียนประสพความสำเร็จ ต่อไปในภายภาคหน้า

ปัจจุบันนี้ ทางโรงเรียน เปิดการเรียนการสอนถึงปี 11 แต่มีแผนที่จะเพิ่มปี 12 และ 13 เมื่อย้ายไปที่โรงเรียนใหม่

นักเรียนได้ส่ง ภาพเหล่านี้มาให้ และบอกเล่าถึงสิ่งที่พวกเค้าทำ และแง่ความคิดว่าอะไรคือความสุขและความสำเร็จ

ข่าวจากชั้นประถมศึกษา

ปีการศึกษานี้ได้สิ้นสุดลง ความสุขท่วมท้นหัวใจทุกๆดวงที่นี่ เป็นปีที่ดีมาก พวกเราได้เรียนรู้และแลกเปลี่ยนประสพการณ์ ที่จะตรึงอยู่ในใจพวกเราไปตราบนานเท่านาน เป็นเวลาแห่งการเฉลิมฉลองในความสำเร็จของนักเรียน และการทำงานอย่างทุ่มเทของทุกๆคน ที่ร่วมกันสร้างบรรยากาศที่นี่ให้เหมาะกับการเรียนการสอนอย่างแท้จริง ถึงเวลาแล้วที่เราจะหวนนึกถึงหนทางแห่งความสำเร็จที่ผ่านมา แล้วก็เตรียมแผนการณ์วาดเค้าโครงของความสำเร็จ ในก้าวต่อไป มีหลายสิ่งหลายอย่างเกิดขึ้นมากมายที่ทำให้ปีการศึกษานี้ไม่เหมือนปีอื่นๆที่ผ่านมา ครูได้ชมกิจกรรมหลากหลายของนักเรียนและครูๆ ซึ่งสนุกมาก

กิจกรรมวันสิ้นปี “End of Year Music and Arts Appreciation Day”ได้รับสมยานามว่าเป็นการแสดงที่ดีที่สุดที่เคยดูมา!

งานนี้ประสพความสำเร็จได้ด้วยความสนับสนุนจากทุกๆฝ่าย ขอขอบคุณ..สำหรับ คุณครู ธุรการ ครัว ช่างบำรุง โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง ท่านผู้ปกครอง และขอขอบคุณ..นักเรียนของเรา สำหรับปีที่น่าอัศจรรย์นี้ ครูหวังว่าแสงสว่างในใจของนักเรียนทุกๆคนยังคงส่งประกายเจิดจรัสต่อไป สำหรับนักเรียนที่จบการศึกษาจากที่นี่ไป ครูขอให้พวกเธอประสพความสุขสมหวังในทุกๆสิ่งที่เธอปรารถนา ขอแสดงความยินดีกับนักเรียนปี6 ที่ตั้งใจเรียนจนจบประถม แล้วก็มุ่งหน้าสู่ก้าวต่อไปในระดับมัธยม
