Meetings & Presentations

Year 9 Options Meeting & Fair

On Wednesday the 10th of January our Year 9 students started the process of choosing the subjects they wish to study at GCSE/IGCSE. To help support the students and parents with this decision we held a parent presentation in the Primary Hall where the process was explained and some ideas were given on the best way to make the choices. This was followed by the main event of the day; the Options Fair. Each subject offered in Year 10 & 11 had a stall where teachers and students were on hand to explain what each subject was like to study at this level. The students and parents were then free to roam the Sports Hall to see what subjects are on offer and to have their questions answered. We sincerely hope the Year 9 students now have all the information they need to decide which subjects will be the best choices for their future education. 📩 If you have questions or would like more information about the Year 9 options, please contact Mr Davidson, Deputy Head of Secondary (Academics) at [email protected]

On the 7th and 8th of December, a group of HeadStart students took part in the annual Thai Etiquette Competition for the 8th year running. The event took place at the Sapan Hin Gymnasium with Mr Saroj Angkanapilat, the Mayor of Phuket Municipality, presiding over the opening and presenting the certificates to our students. Well done to the 10 HeadStart representatives from Reception, Primary and Secondary who dedicated the time and effort to practicing for the competition. As an international school, we are so proud of them for taking part in this Thai cultural event as we aim to instill knowledge and proper conduct in Thai culture. Calvin Van Der Laan’s Interview: Navigating University Life

When Calvin Van Der Laan, a former student of HeadStart School, returned to his alma mater, he brought with him a treasure trove of insights from his ongoing journey through university life in the Netherlands. Addressing an audience of current Y12 students, Calvin delved into a diversity of facets of his university experience so far. His talk began by shedding light on the financial independence that university demands, stressing the importance of budgeting and learning to manage personal expenses. Drawing from personal anecdotes, Calvin shared how he navigated the shifts in his academic journey and a change of course, underscoring the significance of embracing change and pursuing your own passions.

In discussing safety concerns at university, Calvin reassured students about the support systems and resources available, encouraging proactive awareness and vigilance in the new environment. Identifying distinctions between high school and university studies, Calvin emphasised the need for self-discipline and effective time management. The shift from structured guidance to self-driven learning was a key point, urging students to adapt and take charge of their academic paths. Crucially, Calvin stressed the value of building connections and friendships at university. He emphasised the richness that diversity brings to your social circle and the importance of stepping out of comfort zones to forge new relationships.

His visit served as an inspiration, leaving an indelible impression on the students. Calvin’s anecdotes and advice painted a vivid picture of the challenges and triumphs awaiting them beyond the walls of HeadStart School. As the session concluded, Calvin’s words lingered, igniting a spark of confidence and resilience in the students’ minds as they prepared to embark on their own unique university journey. -University Guidance Team
