Foundation

Our Academic Staff members are at the very heart of our School. It is their enthusiasm and commitment in providing learning to our students that inspires our high standards and continued success.

HeadStart’s over 90 specialist teachers have British, Australian, US or similar internationally recognised qualifications which include Bachelor and Master Degrees and Doctorates. They bring with them a wealth of current experience from their home countries and from other international schools. Teachers in Foundation and Primary School are supported by a team of qualified teaching assistants.

The dedication and commitment of our Operational Staff in supporting the day-to-day running of HeadStart ensures that our students receive the very best in learning and extra-curricular activities.

‘Throughout the school, teachers’ subject knowledge and understanding of how students learn are strong. Relationships between students and teachers are positive. The ratio of qualified teachers to students, especially in the early years and lower primary classes, is high. ‘Deputy’ teachers, who are fully qualified teachers in their home countries, support class teachers. Due to their expertise, they make a significant difference to the rates of progress that students make. Teachers know students well and assess them accurately. This enables teachers to plan work that matches the ability of individual students and caters well for their varying needs.’ Education Development Trust (EDT) Accreditation Report, June 2017

Charlotte Myers

Preschool
[email protected]

My name is Charlotte and I am entering my sixth year of teaching. I absolutely love teaching and I am so excited to be teaching preschool; a year group that I consider to be the most important. I believe that it is in an environment of mutual respect that talents can thrive and I make my classroom that place. I am a cheerful, happy, nurturing and excited teacher which consistently proves a successful approach when working with young children. I believe that when lessons are both fun and challenging children are engrossed; which leads to maximizing their progress. As I demonstrate daily that I love my job and love being with the children, they recognize this and in turn strive to impress, which again leads to happy children who are achieving their full potential. Children always enjoy being in my classroom and this shows with their positive attitudes. I pride myself on building a positive learning environment in which children feel confident, secure and most importantly safe and content. I grew up in the North of England in a city named Leeds. I then went to University in Liverpool where I studied Creative Writing. Throughout my degree, knowing that I wanted to be a teacher, I volunteered at schools in Liverpool, working with children who spoke English as a second language. Working with EAL children has proven a consistent and focal part of my career and has prepared me well for teaching overseas. To qualify as a teacher, I relocated to the South of England and completed the Graduate Teacher Program at a prestigious school in Buckingham. Upon qualifying as a teacher I taught in England for three years which was a very rewarding time professionally. I then moved overseas to Chiayaphum in Thailand where I worked as a Year 1 teacher in a government school. Following this I taught in Vietnam and Spain, before moving to the Middle East where I taught in an outstanding international school in Dubai, where I thoroughly enjoyed being a Year 1 teacher. Outside of the classroom I really enjoy being fit and healthy and I exercise every day. I also love cooking lots of healthy Vegan foods and investigating new ways to cook things. I love sport, especially rugby and sprinting. I also really enjoy singing, sometimes I sing all day! So I will definitely spend lots of time singing with the children this year; I am also currently learning to play the ukulele but I need more practice before I let the children hear me!

[email protected]

Hello! My name is Saki and I have been teaching at HeadStart International School since April 2017. I am originally from Japan, however I have been fortunate enough to grow up in Thailand and New Zealand. I studied at St Mary’s Twickenham University in South West London, gaining a degree in Primary Education (specialising in Early Years). During my time in England, I was fortunate enough to teach across all primary key stages, as well as the Early Years Foundation Stage, and work with children from different backgrounds. As an Early Years practitioner, I believe that an engaging environment is key. Through this, we are able to see the children’s uniqueness and their interest in areas across the curriculum, to help further their development in every way possible. I also believe that having a positive relationship with parents, guardians and children makes for fantastic progress in the children’s lives, both at home and at school. Thus, I am very much looking forward to working with you all to make this happen! Outside of the classroom, I enjoy reading, playing and watching basketball, travelling and eating. If there are any restaurants you would recommend in Phuket, especially for Japanese food, please let me know! Thank you very much; I am looking forward to a brilliant year ahead.

My name is Amy Drew, I am originally from the UK but have been in Thailand 7 years now. I joined the HeadStart Foundation team in 2014 on the old school site. It has been exciting to see the development of the school and to be part of the journey. Prior to joining HeadStart I taught in Bangkok for an International School. During my teaching career I’ve taught all ages and classes within the Foundation stage since beginning my teaching career in 2012, and completing a PGCE at Nottingham University. My husband, Mr Drew, and I welcomed our first child, baby Ted, to Phuket in 2018, and I took a break from teaching to be with him for his first year. I had hoped that my teacher training and the experience with children in their early years would prepare me well for having my own child, however nothing quite prepares you for a baby! I hope that my new understanding of parenthood will assist with my empathising with both parents and children. The experience has given me a unique insight into the mind of a young learner, especially relating to language acquisition as I observe my child learning to speak both English and Thai. I am excited to bring this new experience back into the classroom to help the Early Years students in their development.

Sukonta Petkaew

Thai Teacher
[email protected]

Hello everyone, my name is Sue and I hold the position of a primary Thai teacher here at HeadStart International School. It completely three years at the new campus and it went absolutely well. It was another fabulous year of teaching and learning for teachers and students at HeadStart. It is clear that our continuing success comes from good leadership, highly qualified teachers, a strong curriculum, and outstanding effort from the students. I completed my forth year working here and I am happy to continue working with great colleagues and students. Over the past sixteen years I have taught students from Early Years to Year 10 and I have worked in a variety of schools. Previous to this post I taught at British International School Phuket (BISP) as a Secondary Thai teacher for just under 8 years. Firstly I worked as a Teaching assistant, then I was promoted to the position of Second language Thai teacher in the Secondary school until I left the school in 2013. I left because I felt the need to find new challenges and opportunities. The skills I learned were invaluable but it was time to use them in a different capacity to further enhance the learning of my students elsewhere. This is why I came to HeadStart and I was holding the position of Head of Thai Faculty at the first two years. I am always very professional, honest, and sincere in my approach, both with students and parents. I strive to keep up with current teaching practices and have worked hard to continually upgrade my teaching skills by attending additional training courses and workshops. My passion for teaching comes from a love of learning. My aim is to get students interested and excited in what they are learning about and even to get them to decide what they want to study more. I have undertaken some key roles in providing opportunities for our new staff in a number of areas. I have an additional role as an instructor for the Thai Language and Culture course for new non-Thai teachers as well as a mentor for the many traditional Thai events held at the school. I welcome all parents to contact me about their child/children’s progress and I hope I am successful in making every effort to make them feel comfortable in doing so. It is important for teachers and parents to work together to create a positive learning environment for the students. Please contact me at: [email protected]
