Management

The School is privately owned by shareholders and the Board of Directors has delegated the long term strategy and planning of the school to the School Board and the day-to-day running of the school to the Senior Management Team which consists of a CEO, School Director, Head of Secondary and Head of Primary (who are supported by Deputy Heads in each school phase).

‘The leadership and management of the school are good overall. Much has been achieved in a relatively short amount of time. Leaders demonstrate a shared vision, high energy, ambition and the drive to take this good school still further to reach its goal of being the best it can be. The chief executive officer, school board and senior leaders have worked effectively as a team to bring about continuing improvement.’ Education Development Trust (EDT) Accreditation Report, June 2017

Education is one of the most important tools that allows human beings to thrive and has been a major force in helping industrialised countries to develop. Learning never stands still and is a continuous part of life’s experiences. At HeadStart International School, I am confident that we have built one of the best educational management teams and structures in Thailand; one that encourage students to become fully qualified member of society. Not only this, we enhance our teaching and learning with the best teachers possible. We are the only international school in Phuket to offer the full Cambridge International Programme with benchmarks that are recognised throughout the world. We encourage students to be independent and disciplined by promoting independence and self confidence, combined with empathy and respect for others. Moreover, our students enhance their analytical thinking by enthusiastic use of the technology throughout their learning at HeadStart. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents for trusting us as a school to take good care of their children and to educate them to be intelligent, responsible, well-adjusted member of society ready to make a positive contribution to their environment. HeadStart would not be the success it is today without the involvement and support we receive from parents. I sincerely believe that together we will continue to develop the school for the benefit and education for our children and that we will become the number one school in Phuket; a school that will be in your heart forever.

Since joining HeadStart International School in August 2014, I have been genuinely impressed by the hard work and commitment of all those involved in making HeadStart a place where students are inspired to have the ‘love of learning’ described in the school’s motto. The school community here is one of the best I have ever-worked with and the positive energy that this creates enables us to achieve so much together. Since our last inspection where the school was rated as a good with a number of outstanding features highlighted, I strongly believe that HeadStart International School is well on the way to becoming one of the best schools in Thailand, providing the highest standards in teaching and learning. As we prepare for the next phase where we hope to gain a solid ‘Outstanding’ rating, the next few years will be a truly exciting time for all those involved. Having had a successful Teaching career in the UK for a number of years and having worked in various different management positions, my wife Amy and I made the decision to move to Thailand in 2012 where I worked at an International School in Bangkok. The opportunity to make a real impact at HeadStart and to help shape the future successes of the school drew me to move to Phuket. On a personal level, I am a keen sportsman and have an interest in many sports both as a spectator or participant. A highlight for me was having a leadership position for Event Services at the London 2012 Olympic Games. I am also keen golfer and compete in many of the regular competitions held here in Phuket and further afield. My wife Amy is a teacher in the Foundation department having joined HeadStart shortly after I did. Since working at HeadStart we have become parents for the first time. Ted Drew was born in April 2018 and is excited to be joining pre-school in this academic year. I look forward to continuing to working with the inspired staff and students and the committed and supportive parents that make up the HeadStart. Together we will ensure that we continue to build on the existing successes of the school and make each academic year even more successful than the last. Please feel free to email me at any time to discuss your ideas on how we can do this together. I look forward to meeting you again as the year progresses!

Timothy Davidson

Deputy Head of Secondary (Academic)
[email protected]

My name is Tim and I have been teaching at HeadStart International School since 2018. I was born and raised in the beautiful county of Cornwall; located in the southwestern tip of the UK. After sitting my A-levels at Cornwall College I was awarded a scholarship from Pilkington Optronics to study Physics at Reading University. Post University I entered research at the National Physical Laboratory researching the use of quantum dots to replace fluorescent tag molecules for medical diagnosis. However, the life of a researcher often left me in need of human interaction and I decided to opt for a career change; studying a PGCE at the Institute of Education, in London. After my PGCE I took up my first full time teaching post in West London. I remained at this school for seven and a half years during which time I took on a variety of roles including Head of Physics, running the school’s science specialism and Learning Leader; a role which saw me helping to develop the teaching practice of my peers. I then took up my first International post in Prague where I worked as both the Head of Physics and the Teaching and Learning Coordinator for four years. Post Prague I moved to Phuket where I took on the role of Head of Science at HeadStart. I then remained in this post until 2022 when I took on the role of Deputy Head of Secondary - Academics. My approach to teaching has been formed from educational research and personal experience. The key to creating lifelong learners to is to give the students ownership of their learning and ensure they are suitably challenged and engaged throughout their time in education. To do this I endeavor to create an environment that fosters deep learning and stimulates students’ curiosity. In the past this was an approach I used when teaching and which we developed in the Science faculty; a strategy that saw continued improvement in terms of student progress and attainment. In my new role I am now trying to promote this approach across the entire Secondary School. So far my first year at HeadStart has been the only year where every lesson was taught face to face. With these constant challenges to their learning I have been impressed by the resilience and attitude of the students; attributes that have led to continued increase in attainment across the school. I have no doubt that the current cohort is capable of continuing this improvement and I look forward to helping, and ensuring, that this prediction is proven to be true! I am excited about continuing my adventure at HeadStart International School and being given the opportunity to further aid the students in developing a love of learning.

Mathew Sillett

Deputy Head of Secondary (Pastoral)
[email protected]

I grew up in Southampton, England and moved to Canterbury to obtain my degree from the University of Kent. My teaching career began in Thailand, in 2008. What I expected to be a year of fun and travel became a life long passion for both teaching and Thailand. On returning to the UK I began teaching at a secondary state school in Kent where I honed my classroom practice as a teacher of English, film and media. From there I accepted a teaching role in a private school, teaching film and media before being promoted to the senior leadership team as Assistant Headteacher for key stages 3 and 4, both pastoral and academic. Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed this role, staff and students, Thailand was calling. So in 2016 I returned to Thailand, with my wife, to work at a top tier international school in Bangkok as Head of English as an additional language. Whole school pastoral and academic initiatives and leadership are where my passion lies and therefore, when the opportunity arose, I moved to another international school in the city as Head of Secondary. During my tenure I worked with my team to improve academic outcomes and restructure the pastoral model to ensure all young people were able to achieve their potential in a safe and embracing environment. Whilst at the school I introduced the BTEC from KS3 through to KS5 and worked with the Ministry of Education on a High School Diploma to ensure all students gained entry to further education and training. I also developed the community service ethos within the school, focusing on my own passion for environmentalism and social responsibility. Over the past few years (my wife would say decades) I have been completing my PhD in media ecology with a focus on South East Asian literature. This period of study has transformed my understanding of human cognition and communication. I will have also completed my NPQH in 2021, an internationally recognised qualification for senior leaders in education. With two young children, moving to Phuket was an important next step and to be able to enjoy the great outdoors every day is a significant change from life in Bangkok! I am very fortunate to have found a school like HeadStart that holds the same values and educational approach as my own; embracing differences, encouraging creativity and creating well rounded individuals. Working with young people and supporting them as they navigate the path to adulthood is an honour that I don't take lightly. The school years should be a time of happiness and development, both academically and pastorally and I look forward to being a part of that journey.

Indu Bedi

Deputy Head of Secondary (Sixth Form)
[email protected]

Swadee ka and Hello. My name is Indu Bedi and I am a Deputy Headteacher and a teacher of English at HeadStart International school. Having previously worked at HeadStart as the Head of English and Humanities, I am familiar with many aspects of this dynamic and creative school. I am excited to return in my new role to oversee the Sixth Form and Staff Development and once again work with a determined team of professionals to make this a successful school where all students thrive personally and academically. I learnt my craft as a teacher in England where I taught for 16 years holding a variety of roles including Head of Faculty, Director of Learning and Teaching, Assistant Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher. I embarked on my international career 10 years ago with my family and have since taught in Malaysia and Thailand. I am a certified Teacher Trainer with a specialism and a passion for developing pedagogical approaches to support language acquisition. I have written and led training in England and abroad. I have also worked for Sunderland University (UK) in supporting and assessing teachers training internationally. I have a BA (Hons) in the Humanities, majoring in English Literature, a PGCE in teaching English with Drama, an MA in Cultural and Critical Studies and I have completed my National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) in the UK. I have a genuine interest in how our pedagogical approaches in the classroom can be developed to enhance the learning of all students. As a teacher and leader, I am a strong believer in the growth mindset (Carol Dweck); I believe intelligence can be grown through using the right methods to teach and through developing student self-belief. I am also passionate about creating effective lifelong learners through making learning as transparent as possible so students know what steps to take to ensure their own success. With these key ingredients, choosing the right methods to teach, nurturing the growth mindset and making learning transparent, I believe all students achieve academic success and leave school with a belief in themselves. I also have a passion for teaching my subject, English, as I believe language and literature lie at the heart of individual empowerment. The study of language allows us to understand how language is used and how to use language effectively for our own purposes; this is central to one’s success in and beyond school. The study of literature, whilst contributing to improved language skills, also develops intelligence, imagination and the ability to view the world through different lenses. I am looking forward to working in partnership with the students, and their parents, in the Sixth Form to ensure they achieve academic success and they continue to enjoy their lives as students at the school. I am also looking forward to working with colleagues across the school to develop learning and teaching practice so we continue to inspire a love of learning amongst all of our students. Outside of school, I enjoy being a mum to my two young daughters, Anoushka and Taara Lily, reading (I have a particular interest in post-colonial literature and self-development books), spending time in nature, meditating and trying new recipes in my kitchen!

Sam Khan

Head of Foundation and Primary
[email protected]

I was born and grew up in London, England. If any of you are familiar with the sport of Rugby Union, I grew up very close to Twickenham Stadium! I graduated in History from the University of Teeside in 1992, and in 1999 completed my P.G.C.E. and have now been an educationalist for over 17 years. As well as my teaching experience, I have a total of 12 years of experience as a curriculum manager and school leader, having served as an Assistant Head, a Deputy Head and Head Teacher. In my most recent role, in the Middle East , I worked as a School Improvement Consultant. I am a passionate believer in the transformational nature of education and learning. I believe that children learn best when they enjoy their learning and feel secure when facing tasks that are stimulating and challenging. Pupils should feel valued in the classroom and feel confident that enthusiasm and good learning will be met with recognition and praise from the teacher and peers. As a school leader I am committed to the challenge of motivating the whole school community to help every individual pupil realise his or her talents, whilst at the same time ensuring that our pupils are empowered with the essential skills to be able to make a positive contribution in an increasingly globalised world of rapid change and innovation. I believe that schools where success is celebrated, and challenges faced head on in a professional culture of support, trust and honesty are schools that ensure the best possible outcomes for all its students. As a school leader I am committed to creating an empowering and enabling school culture with a powerful ethos of positivity and hard work.

Tony Williams

Deputy Head of Primary (Academic)
[email protected]

Hello and sawadee krap. My name is Tony Williams and I am really happy and excited to become part of the wonderful HeadStart community. I am joined by my wife Madeleine, who will teach Primary EAL, and my daughter Heidi, who cannot wait to meet her new friends in Reception. I am from Darlington, a town in the Northeast of England, and studied Law at the University of Northumbria, before completing my PGCE in Primary Education at Leeds Beckett University. I have extensive teaching and leadership experience in a range of schools both in the UK and internationally, holding key posts including Head of Years 1-5, Head of Key Stage 1, Head of Key Stage 2, Science Leader and Assistant Head of Primary. My most recent post was as Head of Primary at an international school in Bangkok, where I achieved the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH). I strongly believe that education is about finding ways to unlock the true potential of every child. As a school leader, I believe my principal role is to develop the personal, social, and academic skills that children need to enjoy their future lives and be successful. This is best done by ensuring that learning is creative, engaging and challenging; every child should learn to be a team player, a problem solver, a critical thinker; every child should leave HeadStart with a set of values and skills and the enthusiasm to make an exciting contribution to the world. I look forward to working with the students, staff and parents during these exciting times to build on the school’s already outstanding success. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy football and skiing, support Newcastle United, and love exploring new places and trying new foods with my family. Whilst in Phuket, I am also hoping to develop my new-found passion for scuba diving.

Deputy Head of Primary (Pastoral)
[email protected]

My name is Rebecca Ross and I am the new pastoral deputy head here at HeadStart. I am from Cornwall, England which is where I started my teaching career in primary education following completion of a Primary Bachelor of Education (Hons). Since then I have completed the National Professional Qualification for Headship, NPQH and have spent a number of years in leadership positions. Most recently, I have been working for the Ministry of Defence as a deputy head teacher for British military families posted to Cyprus. This was a great opportunity; however I look forward to working with students and their families where there is less mobility, and greater opportunity to be part of students' development over a greater length of their school life. I have always lived and worked by the sea and can’t wait for the opportunity to take up diving again here in Thailand. Due to the poor diving conditions in Cornwall, and the lack of sea life in the Mediterranean off Cyprus, it has been many years since I have explored the underwater world. I have a 19 year old son who is completing a degree apprenticeship with Jaguar Land Rover in the UK and a 16 year old son who will be joining the sixth form here at HeadStart. My husband Iain has also joined HeadStart as a computing and maths teacher. I pursue excellence in everything and strive to achieve the best possible outcomes for pupils. I believe in nurturing pupils to not only achieve their academic potential, but also develop as confident, resilient and respectful individuals within our community and globally. I am looking forward to working within such a diverse community where there is clearly a strong sense of identity and wellbeing which support academic success. I know from many years of experience that great things can be achieved within a community when strengths and interests are supported and I look forward to being part of this.

Natalie Walker

Deputy Head (Foundation)
[email protected]

Hello! My name is Natalie Walker. I joined Headstart in April 2021 as Reception Teacher. This year I will be Deputy Head of Foundation. I am from a town called Newcastle upon Tyne which is in the United Kingdom where I studied for my degree in Early Childhood Education. Over the past 18 years I have been lucky enough to teach in all Early Years age groups in a range of International and private schools while working within the management team. I worked in China and the UK before moving to Phuket with my family. In both positions, I managed outstanding early year’s provision and lead the development of these units and instilled a love of early childhood education. My husband, Mr Walker and our two children are also at Headstart and are excited for the coming year. As a family we like to play golf, go to the beach and of course go to many of the wonderful restaurants around Phuket. I am very happy to be leading a team of dedicated and creative Foundation teachers in order to give your children the best possible education experience in their early childhood. I believe that for children to achieve, discover their talents and become resilient young people they must feel safe and secure both in their personal and home lives. As teachers and education providers our role stretches further than what subjects we can teach them but rather educate and support the development of the ‘whole child’. Taking a holistic approach we are able to focus on the personal, social and emotional needs of children whilst supporting their cognitive and physical ability. Children spend much of their childhood studying and preparing for exams, it is my mission to ensure that every child we enroll at HeadStart looks back on their early years with fun and happy memories, knowing that they were given the opportunity to grow and explore in an interesting and diverse environment.

Nicholas Carter

Director of Sport
[email protected]

My name is Nick Carter and I am from Kent, in the UK. I came to Thailand in 2015, after 6 years of living and teaching P.E. in Stockholm, Sweden (where it snows for six months of the year!). So, it is fair to say that I was ready for a completely different climate change, as well as cultural change. My sporting background is very diverse. I grew up with a passion for playing football but, later, in my teens, I discovered baseball. I made my debut for the Great Britain national baseball squad at the age of 18 and played with the squad for the next 14 years. I also trained as a professional contemporary dancer and toured nationally and internationally for 7 years in numerous dance companies. Although I have many other sporting interests, I want to make it clear that P.E. teachers are not just whistle blowing, basketball bouncing individuals, as I released my first fictional novel (in June, 2015). However, participating in sport, physical activity, and leading a healthy lifestyle are very important to me, and I’ve enjoyed imparting my knowledge in teaching and coaching environments for over 20 years. I am delighted to be HeadStart’s Director of Sport and my fundamental aims are for our students to continue to experience a really diverse range of physical activities, all the while having loads of fun through being active. For example, HeadStart pupils will participate in the following sports activities in either curriculum time or in our fantastic After School Sports programme: Basketball, Netball, Football, Rugby, Athletics, Swimming, Badminton, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Softball, Rounders, Yoga, Dance, and Gymnastic activities (amongst others). Alia Sillett

Director of Creative & Performing Arts
[email protected]

I was born and raised in Bath in the UK where I developed a love and passion for the performing arts. After completing my schooling, I studied Drama and Theatre Arts at the University of Kent in Canterbury for both my undergraduate degree and Masters Degree in which I specialised in stand-up comedy. I spent some time "gigging" on the stand-up circuit around the UK, culminating in being entered for the British funny Women of the year award in 2008. After being a teaching ambassador for the University of Kent I had the opportunity to teach in Thailand in 2008; it was here I found both my passion for teaching as well as Thailand! I returned to the UK to qualify as a teacher where I had a successful teaching and management career in the British state school system. I have had various roles in education; Key Stage Leader, Head of Faculty for Performing Arts and Assistant Head Teacher. During this time I have had the opportunity to gain my second Masters, in Education; Transformational Leadership and completed the Outstanding Leaders in Education programme. I am a passionate educationalist who truly believes in the power of drama to instil confidence, collaboration, leadership and individuality in our students. I have always been an advocate for holistic education and believe that a child's school experience should encompass academics, creativity and capacity for mental and physical growth. My classroom mantra is 'lead with kindness'. In 2016 myself and my husband moved back to Thailand to begin our international career at a top tier international school. During this time I was lucky enough to train with The Juilliard School completing their Drama teacher training and complete my category two International baccalaureate training in Theatre Arts with ISTA. After five years in Bangkok, we moved to HeadStart in 2021 with our two children who also attend the school. I love teaching and living in Thailand and like to spend my free time on the beach with my children, scuba diving, and searching for the best Som Tum on the island; so if you have any recommendations, please let me know!
