Management

The School is privately owned by shareholders and the Board of Directors has delegated the long term strategy and planning of the school to the School Board and the day-to-day running of the school to the Senior Management Team which consists of a CEO, School Director, Director of Studies, Head of Secondary and Head of Primary (who are supported by Deputy Heads in each school phase).

‘The leadership and management of the school are good overall. Much has been achieved in a relatively short amount of time. Leaders demonstrate a shared vision, high energy, ambition and the drive to take this good school still further to reach its goal of being the best it can be. The chief executive officer, school board and senior leaders have worked effectively as a team to bring about continuing improvement.’ Education Development Trust (EDT) Accreditation Report, June 2017

Education is one of the most important tools that allows human beings to thrive and has been a major force in helping industrialised countries to develop. Learning never stands still and is a continuous part of life’s experiences. At HeadStart International School, I am confident that we have built one of the best educational management teams and structures in Thailand; one that encourage students to become fully qualified member of society. Not only this, we enhance our teaching and learning with the best teachers possible. We are the only international school in Phuket to offer the full Cambridge International Programme with benchmarks that are recognised throughout the world. We encourage students to be independent and disciplined by promoting independence and self confidence, combined with empathy and respect for others. Moreover, our students enhance their analytical thinking by enthusiastic use of the technology throughout their learning at HeadStart. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents for trusting us as a school to take good care of their children and to educate them to be intelligent, responsible, well-adjusted member of society ready to make a positive contribution to their environment. HeadStart would not be the success it is today without the involvement and support we receive from parents. I sincerely believe that together we will continue to develop the school for the benefit and education for our children and that we will become the number one school in Phuket; a school that will be in your heart forever.

Since joining HeadStart International School in August 2014, I have been genuinely impressed by the hard work and commitment of all those involved in making HeadStart a place where students are inspired to have the ‘love of learning’ described in the school’s motto. The school community here is one of the best I have ever-worked with and the positive energy that this creates enables us to achieve so much together. Since our last inspection where the school was rated as a good with a number of outstanding features highlighted, I strongly believe that HeadStart International School is well on the way to becoming one of the best schools in Thailand, providing the highest standards in teaching and learning. As we prepare for the next phase where we hope to gain a solid ‘Outstanding’ rating, the next few years will be a truly exciting time for all those involved. Having had a successful Teaching career in the UK for a number of years and having worked in various different management positions, my wife Amy and I made the decision to move to Thailand in 2012 where I worked at an International School in Bangkok. The opportunity to make a real impact at HeadStart and to help shape the future successes of the school drew me to move to Phuket. On a personal level, I am a keen sportsman and have an interest in many sports both as a spectator or participant. A highlight for me was having a leadership position for Event Services at the London 2012 Olympic Games. I am also keen golfer and compete in many of the regular competitions held here in Phuket and further afield. My wife Amy is a teacher in the Foundation department having joined HeadStart shortly after I did. Since working at HeadStart we have become parents for the first time. Ted Drew was born in April 2018 and is excited to be joining pre-school in this academic year. I look forward to continuing to working with the inspired staff and students and the committed and supportive parents that make up the HeadStart. Together we will ensure that we continue to build on the existing successes of the school and make each academic year even more successful than the last. Please feel free to email me at any time to discuss your ideas on how we can do this together. I look forward to meeting you again as the year progresses!

Sam Khan

Head of Foundation and Primary
[email protected]

I was born and grew up in London, England. If any of you are familiar with the sport of Rugby Union, I grew up very close to Twickenham Stadium! I graduated in History from the University of Teeside in 1992, and in 1999 completed my P.G.C.E. and have now been an educationalist for over 17 years. As well as my teaching experience, I have a total of 12 years of experience as a curriculum manager and school leader, having served as an Assistant Head, a Deputy Head and Head Teacher. In my most recent role, in the Middle East , I worked as a School Improvement Consultant. I am a passionate believer in the transformational nature of education and learning. I believe that children learn best when they enjoy their learning and feel secure when facing tasks that are stimulating and challenging. Pupils should feel valued in the classroom and feel confident that enthusiasm and good learning will be met with recognition and praise from the teacher and peers. As a school leader I am committed to the challenge of motivating the whole school community to help every individual pupil realise his or her talents, whilst at the same time ensuring that our pupils are empowered with the essential skills to be able to make a positive contribution in an increasingly globalised world of rapid change and innovation. I believe that schools where success is celebrated, and challenges faced head on in a professional culture of support, trust and honesty are schools that ensure the best possible outcomes for all its students. As a school leader I am committed to creating an empowering and enabling school culture with a powerful ethos of positivity and hard work.

James Barker

Deputy Head of Secondary
[email protected]

My name is James and I am now entering my fifth year working at HeadStart International School. I am from the UK and grew up in the southeast in a small town called Ashford. I studied at Nottingham Trent University, gaining a degree in Business and Computing for Sciences. I returned to University in 2010 to complete my PGCE in Secondary ICT. I remained in Nottingham and taught to a wide range of children from varying backgrounds and ethnicities in a successful inner city school for two years prior to my move to Thailand. I am a great believer in personal learning and in providing students with opportunities to flourish both inside and outside of the classroom. When students enter my classroom they are encouraged to explore the subject for themselves, using past experiences in the knowledge that they are in a secure learning environment. I believe passionately in getting to know the individual personality of my students and strive to allow them to express themselves in the most creative and innovative ways possible. I am also committed to creating a safe and challenging learning environment where all students are part of a positive-learning experience. I am looking forward to getting started this academic year at the school continuing in my role as deputy head of secondary and hope to build on the successes already present in the school and continue to develop an inclusive learning environment.

James Hornby

Deputy Head of Foundation and Primary
[email protected]

My name is James Hornby and I am very excited about the year ahead at HeadStart International School and my family’s new life in Thailand. I am from England and studied Geography at Loughborough University before completing my PGCE at St. Martin’s College in Ambleside, Cumbria. I taught at schools in Leicester and Yorkshire for 9 years before the opportunity arose to teach at an international school in Cairo, Egypt. During my 2 years living and teaching in Egypt, I explored the desert and also developed a passion for the underwater world through scuba diving; while in Phuket I intend to spend as much of my free time as possible underwater in the Andaman Sea. Before arriving in Thailand, my last teaching post was in Vietnam where I worked at a large international school in Saigon for 9 years. Experience has taught me that it is very important to understand that individuals learn in different ways, enjoy different things and achieve differently and at different rates. By providing a safe yet challenging learning environment where the children are not afraid to ‘have a go’ and make mistakes, we can ensure that the children thrive and develop as learners. From what I have seen so far, this is very much the case at HeadStart. Outside of the classroom, apart from spending as much time as possible underwater, I enjoy distance running and rugby, support Liverpool FC and love exploring new places with my wife Nguyen and daughter Jessica. I am really looking forward to finding out more about the wonderful people, places and of course food of Thailand.

Gemma Caines

Head of Sixth Form
[email protected]

My name is Gemma and I work with the older students at HeadStart, helping them prepare for their university applications and get ready for A Levels and BTEC courses. I grew up by the seaside in the North West of England, so I enjoy Phuket life and always being close to the sea. I studied History at Cambridge University, before gaining my Masters from Sussex University. I’ve been teaching since 1997, which makes me feel very old, but working with Sixth Formers keeps me young and (I like to think) up to date with current trends! I’ve worked in a variety of countries in Asia - Sri Lanka, China, Nepal and now here in Thailand. I understand that selecting and going to university, especially in unfamiliar countries, is both exciting and nerve-wracking. I’m there to try and make the transition as smooth as possible. My door is always open, for students of all ages and their families, and I do invite whoever needs to come and talk to me. I also work with a fantastic team on Child Protection and Safeguarding here at school. I believe that children and young people can only thrive academically when they feel personally safe and happy. I’m hopeful we can help create a supportive environment that allows all children to succeed. whatever their goals and ambitions.

Director of Creative and Performing Arts

From a young age music has been a very important part of my life. I have studied piano, clarinet and voice throughout my school career and completed a Bachelors of Music degree at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, completing my final dissertation on Music Education. I moved to London where I taught Primary Music for two years before moving onto the Langley Academy in Slough to become Head of Music for four years. During my time in London I also performed as a session musician in hotels and restaurants and performed and recorded in bands alongside musicians such as Keane and Mumford and Sons. I was also cowriter and music producer for a South African children’s Music Education Programme, Kiddibeat, which gives children from the age of 3 months until 6 years the opportunity to develop life skills through music. In 2009 my husband and I decided to move to Bangkok, Thailand in order to work and travel. It was there that I became Head of Music at Bromsgrove International School for 6 years before moving to Phuket with our two children, Jude and Chloe. I firmly believe that every child deserves the opportunity to experience the Arts, whether through Music, Dance, Drama or Art and Design, as it also helps them improve in other areas such as learning a new language and Math. I see education as holistic, where one subject compliments another.

Nicholas Carter

Director of Sport
[email protected]

My name is Nick Carter and I am from Kent, in the UK. I came to Thailand in 2015, after 6 years of living and teaching P.E. in Stockholm, Sweden (where it snows for six months of the year!). So, it is fair to say that, I was ready for a completely different climate change, as well as cultural change. My sporting background is very diverse. I grew up with a passion for playing football, but later, in my teens, I discovered baseball. I made my debut for the Great Britain national baseball squad at the age of 18 and played with the squad for the next 14 years. I also trained as a professional contemporary dancer and toured nationally and internationally for 7 years in numerous dance companies. Although I have many other sporting interests, I want to make it clear that P.E. teachers are not just whistle blowing, basketball bouncing individuals, as I released my first fictional novel (in June, 2015). However, participating in sport, physical activity, and leading a healthy lifestyle are very important to me, and I’ve enjoyed imparting my knowledge in teaching and coaching environments for over 20 years. I am delighted to be HeadStart’s Director of Sport and my fundamental aims are for our students to continue to experience a really diverse range of physical activities, all the while having loads of fun through being active. For example, HeadStart pupils will participate in the following sports activities in either curriculum time or in our fantastic After School Sports programme -Basketball, Netball, Football, Rugby, Athletics, Swimming, Badminton, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Softball, Rounders, Yoga, Dance, and Gymnastic activities (amongst others). Hannah Brown

Deputy Head of Foundation
[email protected]

Hello, My name is Hannah Brown. I joined HeadStart in August 2019 as the Deputy Head of Foundation school. I have lived in Phuket for 18 months having previously worked as both a teacher and a member of the management at another school. On leaving secondary school I was very aware of the career path I should take. Whilst studying I worked in various early years provisions as an early childhood educator before completing my degree education at the University of Plymouth, UK. I was part of the management team for a large group of early years provisions in England. Throughout my early career I focused my research and professional development around speech and language development and children learning English as a second language, which put me at a great advantage when it came to moving to this beautiful island. I am very excited to lead a team of dedicated and creative EYFS teachers in order to give your children the best possible education experience in their early childhood. I believe that for children to achieve, discover their talents and become resilient young people they must feel safe and secure both in their personal and home lives. As teachers and education providers our role stretches further than what subjects we can teach them but rather educate and support the development of the ‘whole child’. Taking a holistic approach we are able to focus on the personal, social and emotional needs of children whilst supporting their cognitive and physical ability. Children spend much of their childhood studying and preparing for exams, it is my mission to ensure that every child we enrole at HeadStart looks back on their early years with fun and happy memories, knowing that they were given the opportunity to grow and explore in an interesting and diverse environment. When I’m not at school I like to explore the beautiful places Thailand has to offer, spend time with friends, swim in the ocean and eat lots of delicious food! I look forward to meeting new children and parents this year. Good luck to all for the academic year!
