Parents Meeting on E-Safety

Primary parents are all invited to attend our ‘E-Safety: Keeping our children safe in an online world’ parent meeting this coming Tuesday 23rd March. The meeting will be hosted by our Computing Coordinator, Michael Marx, and will take place in the Secondary Hall. We will begin at 8.30 am. Please join us at HeadStart on Friday, 02 April as we celebrate Russian culture at our very first Russian Culture Club event titled Passport to Russia. In the morning, all Foundation and Primary students will have the opportunity to learn about Russia while making their own folk toys or paper dolls, and doing a bit of colouring along the way. In addition, Secondary students will take part in the House Quiz during their homerooms.

There will be a few Russian specialties on the lunch menu for both the Primary and Secondary lunch periods so students can enjoy a taste of Russian food.

In the afternoon, all Secondary students will learn more about Russia by taking part in a quest for information (scavenger hunt of sorts), and will be able to have their “passports” stamped once they are able to track down the correct information.

At the end of the school day there will be quite a bit of Russian culture on display for the entire school community to see and take part in. There will be more Russian food on offer, traditional dress costumes, singing and dancing so please save the date and come join us for what is sure to be a great learning experience for the school community.

Term 2 & 3 Fundraiser for Scholars of Sustenance

Last week Sixth Form students organised a vintage sale in support of our fundraising drive for term 2 and 3 for the Scholars of Sustenance. SOS are working day in and out to bring food to over 60 vulnerable local communities and they need our support. All students and staff were invited to participate in ‘Casual Clothes Day’ in exchange for a donation of 50 Baht. Thanks to the effort on the part of our student leadership and our very supportive HeadStart community, we were able to raise over 27,000 Baht in one day. As you can see from the poster below, there are other organisations raising funds for SOS. Read the information below and see how you can get involved to help those in need.

12 Hour Swimathon

Next week the swim team will take to the pool for the annual 12 Hour Relay! This year we are raising funds for Scholars of Sustenance. Our goal is to earn enough to feed 1,000 people in need. Please sponsor a swimmer, or the team. Your donation will go a long way. -Coach Brown

Stay and Play Sessions

Last week the children in Reception had fun in their Thai class dancing and exercising to a Thai song called ‘Fon Tay Long Ma’ (The Rain Song). Thank you, Khun June (mother of Eva in Reception), Khun Pattharamon (mother of Bella in Reception) and Khun A (a special guest!) for showing the students how to move with the music! - Kru Poy

Year 1 Blue had the best morning at the Phuket Elephant Sanctuary. We got the chance to feed some of the elephants before walking around on the treetop canopy. The children showed great listening skills and asked some wonderful questions. It was so lovely to see these wonderful animals being looked after properly. -Mr Sam Young

Last week the Year 4 Thai students had a lot of fun playing a Thai traditional game called ‘Dtee Look Lor’. This was a fun way to learn about the history and culture of Thailand as the students were able to discover how children played in days gone by. - By Kru Way and Kru Pim

In these days where knowledge is accessible at the click of a button, mental acuity is more important than ever. Year 10 had fun flexing their verbal muscles and working together to decipher anagram conundrums and generating words from arbitrary collections of consonants and vowels. It led me to consider some anagrams of students’ names from the class:

Pi Day

Headstart students of years 7, 8 and 9 celebrated pi-day on March 15. Celebrations were held in the exam hall. After learning that pi represents the ratio between the circumference and diameter of every circle, each year saw some brave students stand up and recite or write down the digits of pi. Year 7 saw some very close results with Christina just topping Jie Jie’s attempt. Libby in year 8 managed the best result across all three years, she remembered 110 digits correctly! Year 9 saw Leon take the prize after a successful second attempt. Well done to all competitors who were courageous to stand up in front of the whole group and to the supportive students who really helped the candidates by being super quiet.

The students then learned how circles are often used in art, now and also many centuries ago across many different civilisations and some beautiful pieces of work were produced just with the help of a pair of compasses. Some Year 7 classes created pi-interesting skylines consisting of buildings with the height of the digits of pi. The celebrations ended in sharing some creative and delicious pi-themed food. Active learning and ASP students are working on a variety of different creative projects, some have learnt to embroider and make pillows, others have been developing their drawing and painting skills. * Year 7 students successfully developed their sculpture building skills recently. Inspired by the famous artist Claes Oldenburg they designed and created their own cake sculptures using mixed media. * Year 8 designed and created characters inspired by the artist Jon Burgerman which they then turned into 3D characters using the sewing machine.

Additional information from Sea Bees: The cost of the course is THB 12.000,- (normal price THB 16.000,-). This includes four dives from the boat, instructor, certification, all diving equipment, meals on the boat (breakfast, lunch, fruit, coffee, tea, drinking water (water dispenser) and a fresh towel on the boat. Each participant must complete an SSI Waiver and Release of Liability Assumption of Risk and Indemnity Agreement, and a Statement of Understanding prior to any in-water training. The forms of minors must be reviewed and signed by a parent or guardian. The regular course schedule looks like this:

1st day: Classroom / Pool. 2nd day: 2 dives from the boat. 3rd day: final 2 dives from the boat.

SUP Youth Camp 27-28 March 2021

Introducing the exclusive SUP Youth Camp with Daniel Hasulyo, 2018 SUP World Champion and Thai National SUP Team at Le Coral Beach Resort & Cafe, Natai Beach, Phang Nga Province. Children aged 12-15 years to join the water activities with the Thailand Surfing Federation. Children will learn about poisonous marine life, First aid, Beach environment conservation and special intensive tutoring with world-class coaches and Thai national SUP team athletes and introducing basic surf skate lessons from Thai Surfing Association and Phuket Water Sports Club.
