Thank You

A big thank you to all the parents and students who donated toys, clothes, books and bikes to the Yes School in Rawai. Reducing Food Waste

Did you know that HeadStart averages approximately 35 kilos of food waste from the canteen everyday? Due to there being 4 compartments on the metal plates (image shown below), we have observed that students fill up each section, often with food that they will not eat. In order to do our part for the environment and cut down on food that is thrown away, we have changed from the large metal plates to regular 10” dinner plates (as shown below) and a soup bowl. Since making the switch over change this week, we have been averaging 18 kilos of food waste which is a great improvement! Students should never leave the dining hall hungry as they are welcome to visit the food buffet as many times.

Parking Etiquette

Time seems to stand still when your car is blocked in behind someone who has left their handbrake on. It is very frustrating when you are in a hurry and are looking for a parking space but someone has parked taking up two spaces instead of one. In order to improve our parking etiquette please remember to:

Park straight within the lines.
Do not leave your handbrake on when double parked.

Good manners are a way of showing people that you have respect for them.

Thai Teachers Observe Our HeadStart in Action

Between the 1-12th May, HeadStart welcomed 16 Thai teachers who teach English as a subject, from Thai schools, for professional development. This course was organised by the Ministry of Education. It was a good opportunity for the teachers to widen their vision as they observed our teachers in action as well as learned more about the aspects of international school education. By Kru Nee

House News

The winners of last week’s Weigh Your Waste challenge, wasting only 2.4 kilos of food were the Red Phoenixes. That’s a fantastic result for the fourth placed Phoenixes who very nearly broke the school Weigh Your Waste record of 2.2 kilos!

The winners of the Secondary House Quiz were the Blue Tigers who are now just 4 points behind the second placed Dragons.

But, it’s still the Yellow Cheetahs that everyone is trying to catch. The Cheetahs are now 200 points in the lead. However, there are still a number of competitions coming up, and don’t forget that Merits can make all the difference. So, keeping working hard everyone!

PISAC Athletics Competition Winners

On Tuesday, 16th May twenty-five of HeadStart’s finest all-round athletes competed at the PISAC Under 13 and Under 15 athletics competition, held at UWC. The students arrived early and were eager to get warmed up and practice their events before the competition began.

The sprints started very well, with HeadStart winning the first two events and also a second place finish. However, the HeadStart students struggled a little in the distance events, perhaps due to only being used to running around a 200m track. However, once the field events began (high jump, triple jump, long jump, and shot put) the HeadStart students began to shine again, showing excellent technique as well as team unity and a winning mentality.

We are delighted to announce that HeadStart were the unanimous winners of the event, beating out the second place team (BISP) by a massive 30 points. Go HeadStart!! By Nick Carter

Swimming News

I am writing to inform you about the swim gala BIS will be hosting on the 6th, June 2017, between 3:30-5:00 pm at BIS. This event is applicable to the Year 7,8,9 and 10 students. There is no cost involved in this programme. Parents must assist with transportation.

We are looking for students who are strong swimmers or are interested in potentially swimming in the Academy for the 2017-2018 season. Please click the link below to sign up! Please note that if you have multiple children signing up please fill out a separate form for each.

PISAC Senior Swim Competition Sign Up Sheet.

Races will range from 50 to 100 meters. Athletes will have the opportunity to swim up in age group if necessary. Coach Brown and the P.E. Team will put your child into their individual races. Each swimmer can compete in up to four (4) individual races. Once races are selected, an email will go out to each with their event(s).

Football Match News: HeadStart vs UWC Over 15s

Result HeadStart 6–2 UWC

Congratulations to the Over 15 boys who showed solidarity with a team of very strong players. The boys showed good technique and were able to hold their own in this very physical match. The boys success has shown that our physical and technical qualities are progressing. Head Coach JR

Football News

The Phuket Youth Development League will resume again this weekend with 2 fantastic matches. The first is an all English encounter with the Premier Leagues 2 most successful clubs facing off as Manchester United (13 EPL titles) take on Chelsea (5 EPL titles). Our other fixture is sure to be a thriller when Real Madrid face Barcelona in El Clasico. We hope the matches will be as entertaining as they were in week 1 and we would like to welcome all parents to come along and show their support. All players should arrive 15 minutes before their matches begin and please remember girls will play down 1 age group. Example, U11 girls play with U9s. We will be having man/woman of the match awards and where possible, we would like to encourage all players to stay until the end, even if their game has finished.

Games are at the following times:

U7, 8:15-9:15

U9 and U11, 9:30-10:45

U13-16, 11:00-12:15

Foundation News

It’s hard to believe that we’ve come to the end of another busy week in Foundation. We have had some great fun this week as the children have enjoyed a range of topics such as Pirates, Space and Superheroes.

Signing In and Out

A big thank you to our parents who have been signing in and out of Foundation each day. It helps us to identify the clubs the children are attending and will help us with our after school planning and provisions for the new academic year. Don’t forget to inform the Homeroom teacher as soon as possible if your child will be absent from school.

Opening Times for Foundation

A gentle reminder - that our Foundation gates do not open until 7.40am and our play areas are not supervised until this time. To avoid any accidents or causing any child to become upset, we are asking all parents with children in Foundation, who arrive before 7.40am, to remain with their child until the gates open. Thanks for your support in this matter.

The Preschoolers were playing Treasure Hunt. Look what they found!

Preschoolers made a pirate craft. They all listened and followed instructions from the teachers.

Man on the Moon

This week as part of our English lessons using the book ‘Man on the Moon’, Year 1 children worked in groups to think of questions to ask Bob’s friend, as Bob was already at work on the Moon. The children then interviewed space friend Sam and put their questions forward. The answers were relayed via satellite to the space helmet of space friend Sam. Ms Nicola Fallows

Year 6 students have been learning how to use formal words to write card for any occasion.

Secondary Department News

I would like to start by congratulating Ms Fabienne Mester and her amazing team for the incredible academy dance show last Saturday. I was transfixed and completely absorbed. HeadStart really has got talent. I look forward to our next show.

This week IGCSE AS and A level exams continue and I am sure the Year 11 and Year 13 students are looking forward to the upcoming work experience.

Year 12 will begin to experience what it is like to be in Year 13 lessons on the 12th June, 2017.

This is a reminder that he last day of school is the 29th of June. We would like all students to stay in school until that date. Please avoid early flights and family holidays, as absence from school hampers both academic and emotional success.

History

This week in their history lesson, as part of their study on ancient China, the Year 7’s recreated the ancient Silk Roads along HeadStart’s corridors! Traders were tasked to buy and sell produce from European and Asian markets, whist also transferring ideas and technologies between the two continents. Mr Richard Cramp

Practicing Thai at N1 Cafe and Green

The Year 8 students are learning about food and drinks in their Thai class. Kru Sue took the students to N1 Cafe & Green to encourage the students to speak and listen to Thai outside the classroom.
