Hello, my name is Rhys and have been at HeadStart since 2018. I am from Australia and originally studied at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne. There I gained a Bachelor of Technology majoring in Aviation. While completing this I also qualified as a private pilot. Following this I worked as the quality manager at a hospital based microbiology laboratory. While working in microbiology I decided to complete a bachelor of education, something I had wanted to do for many years. After this 2 year degree I qualified as a maths and science teacher. I began my teaching career in Australia working as a maths teacher in a number of different roles, before fulfilling my dream of working in the UK. I taught at a school in Hertfordshire for 3.5 years with 3 of those as the deputy head of mathematics. After many years of teaching maths I have found that it is vitally important to build and nurture the confidence of students in the maths classroom. Confident students ask questions and take their own initiative when dealing with problems. Being able to develop the self-assurance of the students in my classroom is something I strive for on a daily basis. Outside of teaching, I am a huge Australian Rules Football fan. My wife and I never miss watching our favourite team the Geelong Cats play on the weekends.
