Hello, my name is Mike and I was born and raised in Philadelphia, located on the east coast of the United States of America (USA). Prior to moving overseas in 2014, I spent over 15 years living in Seattle – which is over 4,500km from where I grew up – and a world away with regards to the cultural differences between the east and west coasts of the USA. I am extremely passionate about education and have dedicated my entire career to the learning sciences field. In addition to a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, I also hold a Master’s Degree in Education from The Pennsylvania State University and earned a TESOL certificate while living in Cambodia and Vietnam six year ago. Prior to becoming a teacher I had a successful career in corporate education providing strategic direction for learning and development initiatives for some of the world’s largest technology companies. I have extensive experience designing, implementing and managing learning programs for KS3, KS4 and adult learners on multiple continents. As the Head of Faculty for English as an Additional Language (EAL) & Languages here at HeadStart International School Phuket, I support and help develop an amazing team of Mandarin, French and Russian language teachers in both Primary and Secondary. In addition, I manage the Fast ForWord online learning program for EAL pupils across the entire school. This academic year I will also be teaching KS3 EAL and Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language to KS4 pupils. I really enjoy traveling and exploring new places and cultures, and strongly believe the world is too big to stay in one place forever. Learning about different cultures continues to broaden my view of the world and helps me appreciate what I have even more. Outside of school you will find me living an active and healthy lifestyle while enjoying any number of the beautiful beaches on this island that I’ve called home for the past five years.

Hello, Sawadee Ka, and Kia Ora! I was raised in the Bay of Plenty; which can be found on the North Island of New Zealand. After successfully completing my high school education, I studied Psychology and Philosophy at the University of Otago in Dunedin; a town that recently regained its record for having the steepest street in the world! I began my career in education in Prague in 2015, where I worked as an ESL teacher for professionals who wished to develop their English language abilities. I soon realized I had a passion for teaching, so I also started work in an English language school for students aged four upwards. I enjoyed working with children immensely, which lead me to further develop my education and I completed my International Post Graduate Certificate in Education in 2019. I have been teaching in Phuket since 2018 and I joined the HeadStart community in 2019. During my time at this school I have been amazed by the dedication and professionalism of my colleagues here. I have also been impressed by the love of learning that the students of this school have. Every day is wonderful and different and it is a joy to inspire and educate the children of this school. During lessons I strive for all children in my class to make outstanding progress in all facets of their education. It is a real joy to see their development over the year. I believe that children are capable of so much and it is our duty as parents and educators to ensure that we provide all the support and facilities necessary to help them reach their potential. If you ever have any questions then please feel free to contact me to discuss them; if we are all working together to achieve the same goals then we will ensure the students not only make rapid progress but also enjoy their time at school and develop a love of learning.
My name is Dina and I've been working as a teacher in Phuket for 10 years. When I was finishing school, I knew of the career path I should take. My mother and grandmother have been teaching Russian language for 35 and 55 years accordingly. I loved spending time at school and university environments and loved when I was given tasks. I felt proud I could take part at school life and help them, my first and best teachers. Learning is an enjoyable experience and I love when children arrive and leave school with smiles on their faces and I feel I make a positive impact on the student’s life and they also influence me. When you are with kids, you see the world through their eyes and immerse in the world of magic, creativity and laughter. I love teaching as I think it is one of the most rewarding jobs in the world and I love making a difference in my students’ lives. I know children learn best when they enjoy their environment, when it is stimulating and when they are given opportunities, promoting a lifelong love of learning where they can learn, grow, discuss and are not afraid to make mistakes as they can learn and find something new out of them. I feel my role is more than just teaching Russian language; I feel it is about supporting the children, teaching them to understand the culture and applying their knowledge to their daily life. Then I feel my role is accomplished.
--- I've been teaching for 17 years now. Every morning I am happy to go to work as I know my students, who are discovering a new world are waiting for me. Their success and outlook depends largely on me so I take my job seriously. My work brings me a sense of fullness of life because it is the most creative profession. Being a teacher means delving into your own childhood with each child as we see the world through his or her eyes. I wanted to become a teacher when I was at school and I have never regretted the choice I have made. The most interesting thing for me is the world of childhood. I have always been studying with interest both at school and university. I have read many books and I really wanted to share all the interesting things I learned. I taught Russian, literature, history, I opened primary schools, worked with authors of various methodologies in Russia, Montenegro and Thailand. Over all these years I have learned that teachers are people with a huge, pure and kind heart, boundless patience, strict and gentle, and people who are trusted.

Hi, my name is Kanokwan Tantawanit or Kru Pla. I am a huge fan of reading as well as yoga and meditation. I also love to travel, eat and teach! What I have always believed and proved it to myself is that “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” - Benjamin Franklin In 2012, I graduated with second-class honours from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, achieving my Bachelor Degree in Spanish. I take pride in studying at Thailand’s first university founded over the century, and ranked by the QS World University Rankings 2020 as the top in the country and listed in the top 50 universities in Asia. There, I have also earned a massive number of course credits in English and Thai throughout the programme with my passionate interest in languages. Experiences in hospitality for a number of years afterwards have developed my interpersonal and communication skills, but never seemed to fulfil my potential and my passion. As the saying goes “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life!” This reminded me of the joy I had as a part-time tutor during my time at the university. In the pursuit of my new goal, I had a fascinating glimpse into the world of international education while being part of the supporting team at Top Scholars, a personalised college prep in Bangkok. I eventually became a full time English teacher in my home town in a private school here in Phuket where I had a memorable experience teaching the students in Prathom 5 and Prathom 6 for over a year, helping many of them to get into the high schools of their dreams, but most importantly bringing out the best in my students. I am wholeheartedly committed to ongoing professional development, so I enrolled in Graduate Diploma Program in Teaching Profession, after which I have officially earned the teaching license from the Teachers’ Council of Thailand. I have truly enjoyed my first year at HeadStart International School. I wish to continue to utilise my enthusiasm for teaching to grow together with the school. I am excitedly looking forward to this next academic year, teaching Thai Foreign Language Programme. It's always worth it to see the students learn, laugh, have fun, and successfully navigate learning and life, and so I couldn’t be happier.

I started my teaching career at Saint Joseph Convent School, Bangkok as a Primary Thai Teacher for 2 years, before I continued teaching at Rajini School, Bangkok for another 3 years. After 5 years in Bangkok, I decided to move back to Khon Kaen in 2000 where I was an alumnus, and it was then that I was appointed to be the Head of Academic Department at Holy Redeemer Northeastern Region School. I worked there for a total of 15 years. In addition, I also worked at Hua Khiew Wittayalai School in Khon Kaen as Head of Academic Department where I was promoted as a Deputy School Director during 2015 -2016. Aside of being a Head of Academic Department, I also teach students in Primary in order to maintain and develop my teaching skills. Over 25 years in different schools and in different roles as a professional educator has given me a wealth of experience and knowledge. Now that I am a Thai teacher in an international school, I hope to do my best for my students and help them to be successful learners while learning the Thai language and our valuable national heritage. I am so glad to have received the good opportunity to teach Thai First Language classes in Year 4 - Year 5 and Thai as a Second Language in Year 6 in this academic year. I am so thankful for the great opportunity that the school allows me to be part of a high quality school and looking forward to providing a good learning experience in order to meet school goals and inspire students, parents and colleagues.
你好(Ni Hao)! My name is Wei Wang and I come from Anhui, China. I first came to Phuket in 2009 when I was studying for my master’s degree in Jinan University(暨南大学), China. I taught in Prince of Songkla University for 1 year to get the experience to finish my essay. It was a nice experience and people were very friendly here. Since then, I’ve made up my mind to come again for a job. After my graduation, I got a job in Khonkaen for teaching Mandarin to primary students; I love my students and learned a lot more Thai there as people there do not speak much English. I stayed in Khonkaen for 2 years, and then try to look for a job in other places in Thailand. And I found HeadStart! After working at HeadStart for seven years, I have seen the growing of the school and me. The students here are lovely and they have a passion to learn Mandarin. They experienced Chinese culture and tasted Chinese food during traditional festivals. They are also curious to learn a totally different writing system (汉字Chinese character). Learning Mandarin not only let them to get to know another language, but also broaden their eyes and teaches them to look into things in different ways. My Mandarin classroom is always filled with laughs as I teach them in a creative way. There is an old saying in China “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand. （不闻不若闻之，闻之不若见之，见之不若知之，知之不若行知）Students are encouraged to involve themselves as much as possible in class. I look forward to see all of you in my Mandarin class!
Hello everyone（大家好! My name is Lingyun Ni and I am Mandarin Teacher for Year 5-9. I have been living in Phuket for two years and I have taught Mandarin at public school for couple of years. Now I'm so glad to join Headstart. I was born in Beijing, the capital of China where I grew up. I graduated from China University of political science and law. I have rich teaching experience and skills for wide range of age, level and class size. My point of view is learning should not be serious atmosphere. Happy education is the key to let students study consciously and actively. In my classroom, I will create a relaxed, harmonious, and pleasant learning environment for students. They are free to ask any questions since I believe in freedom of speech. At the same time, I will form an interaction bond with students though feelings and develop two-ways communication class. There will be an interesting lesson in every class. There are some teaching material which I am good at such as Media and physical display or role playing in teaching to create an active classroom atmosphere. I am not allowed sleepy face in my class. I am encouraging to let students express their ideas, feeling and see what I can support them in their way. I am happy in learning and enjoy the class with children. My name is Banchao Tian and I have been working at HeadStart since January 2019. I am from China and grew up in the southwest in a small tourism city called Guilin. I studied at Jinan University in Guangzhou, gaining a master degree in Linguistics and a certificate of Teaching Mandarin as a Foreign Language. I have taught Mandarin to secondary students at public schools in Bangkok and Phuket for 8 years prior to my move to HeadStart. In my teaching practice, besides delivering the knowledge and skills of Mandarin, it is my aim to inspire and motivate my students to learn the language. I believe the most efficient language learning happens through students’ own engagement and self-effort. Besides, I believe culture is a crucial concept in language teaching, in a certain sense, language learning is culture learning. Exposure to culture will in turn inspire students' interest in learning the language as well. In my teaching, I often introduce aspects of Chinese culture to my students, e.g. Chinese paper-cut, Chinese calligraphy, Beijing opera, Chinese Food and so on. Outside of classroom I enjoy reading and spending time with my family and cats. I’m a tennis lover and always want to play whenever I have free time.

Therefore, when I teach Chinese, I will help students understand the country's excellent traditional culture. At the same time, a variety of teaching methods are used in the classroom to comprehensively improve students' listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities, making the classroom full of fun and increasing students' interest in learning. I sincerely hope to witness the progress of the students in future work!
