Important Updates
HeadStart is awarded 100% pass by OPEC
After a thorough Internal Quality Assurance Inspection by three evaluators from the Office of the Private Education Commission (OPEC), we have been awarded a full 100 point score and our school has been rated as outstanding. This is a milestone achievement for HeadStart.
All private schools in Thailand are assessed by OPEC on a three year cycle. OPEC evaluators informed us that we are currently the only school in Phuket to have achieved the full 100 point score and one of only several in the country to have achieved this score on the first accreditation visit.

เมื่อวันพฤหัสบดี ที่ 27 ก.พ. ที่ผ่านมา โรงเรียนนานาชาติเฮดสตาร์ทได้รับการประเมินคุณภาพภายใน จากสำนักงานคณะกรรมการส่งเสริมการศึกษาเอกชน (สช.) ซึ่งเป็นหน่วยงานที่ทำหน้าที่ตรวจสอบและประกันคุณภาพภายในของโรงเรียนเอกชนในประเทศไทยสังกัดกระทรวงศึกษาธิการ โดยทุกโรงเรียนจะต้องได้รับการตรวจสอบคุณภาพจากสช.ทุกๆ 3 ปี
ในวันนั้นทางคณะกรรมการผู้ประเมินประกอบไปด้วยเจ้าหน้าที่ผู้เชี่ยวชาญจากกระทรวงศึกษาธิการ 3 ท่านที่รับผิดชอบประเมินคุณภาพโรงเรียนนานาชาติทุกแห่งในประเทศไทย คือ อาจารย์วรรณสาร วรกิจ อาจารย์กิตติ สันสอาด และอาจารย์วิรัตน์ พุธสุข โดยทางผู้ประเมินได้มีการประชุมและสัมภาษณ์ทีมฝ่ายบริหาร ตรวจสอบเอกสารต่างๆ ที่เกี่ยวกับการบริหารจัดการในโรงเรียน ดูผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางการเรียนของนักเรียนในทุกวิชา แผนพัฒนาคุณภาพโรงเรียน รวมทั้งได้มีการสัมภาษณ์ตัวแทนครู ตัวแทนคณะกรรมการนักเรียนและตัวแทนจากคณะกรรมการผู้ปกครองทั้งชาวไทยและชาวต่างชาติ
และผลการประเมินก็เป็นที่น่าพอใจ เฮดสตาร์ทได้รับผลคะแนนเต็ม 100% ระดับคุณภาพดีเยี่ยม (Outstanding) นับเป็นการประเมินคุณภาพของโรงเรียนครั้งแรกจากกระทรวงศึกษาธิการโดยทาง สช.จะมีพิธีมอบเกียรติบัติให้โรงเรียนทุกแห่งที่ผ่านการประเมินอย่างเป็นทางการที่กรุงเทพมหานคร ในเดือนกันยายนปีนี้
Update on Dean Jackson
Thank you for your concern for Mr Dean Jackson, who was admitted to the hospital with a broken leg and urgently needed A Negative blood for the operation.
We are pleased to announce that the Red Cross was able to collect enough A Negative blood, although it was quite a challenge and took a few days, the Phuket International Hospital Doctors have operated on Dean last night from 8:00-12:00 pm.
Dean is now in ICU awaiting the results of his operation. If the operation was successful, he will be moved to a regular room by Thursday afternoon.
With this experience we have learned that the Red Cross is in dire need of blood donations on a regular basis. For example, Dean was one of 13 people waiting in line for A Negative blood. We would like to take this opportunity to encourage anyone who is able to please take the time to donate blood to the Red Cross.
We hope to see Dean’s happy face and cheerful disposition in the HeadStart hallways as soon as possible!
The HeadStart International Day celebration will be held on Friday, March 28th 2014 from 4:00 - 8:00pm at FunStart. This is an event involving all the parents, students and staff from Preschool to Year 11. This special event is a time for us all to come together to share a little of our own cultural backgrounds with other members of the community, as well as a chance for us all to learn lots of exciting and interesting things about the world. We anticipate full participation on the part of the students, parents and HeadStart team. We feel that it is important for each child to have her or his country represented so we would like to strongly encourage each of you to participate.
Each country will be asked to set up a table, display or area in which to represent their country. Hosting International Day at FunStart will provide enough space for each ‘country’ to spread out as much as they like.
Some suggestions for your displays could be: cheese tasting, cooking, watching videos, listening to music, playing traditional games, reading stories, hockey games, barbeques, arts and crafts, sports activities and many more. Some countries may also want to feature a song or dance presentation from their country. The children will love visiting all the tables and participating in whatever activities each country has planned.
To make the day extra colourful we hope that many of you and your children will be able to wear either national clothes from your home country or something representing another culture.

Parenting Tip
In this modern politically correct climate of looking for a label to explain every aspect of low school achievement, this question is particularly relevant.
As the British National Lottery catchphrase says: YOU GOT TO BE IN IT TO WIN IT. In other words, your child needs to attend school in order to make progress at school. Research has shown that your child’s attendance record may, in fact, be the biggest factor influencing his or her academic success. Regular school attendance can also help non-native English-speaking students by giving them the regular exposure to English that they need to master skills and information more quickly and accurately - even in other subjects! Just by being present at school, your child is learning how to be a good citizen by participating in the school community, learning valuable social skills and developing a broader world view. ** Your commitment to school attendance will also send a message to your child that education is a priority for your family and that going to school every day is a critical part of educational success.
In Thailand a minimum of nine years’ school attendance is mandatory and it is the duty of parents and carers to ensure that they are supported to do so. Mandatory student attendance is a policy that Headstart International School takes seriously. We understand that children sometimes have to miss school because of illness or if they have long term medical issues. If this is the case: contact the school immediately. The absence needs to be excused. Unexcused absences will go on a student’s permanent record; the consequences of your child missing lessons can include falling behind and poorer performance on assessments and tests.
Remember, that as a parent or carer, it is your responsibility to make school attendance a priority, and help your child keep from falling behind. Moreover, ensure your child gets to school on time every day. Heavy traffic, problems with a car and the weather are not permissible reasons to arrive late or to miss school. Frequently coming to school late may also be noted on your child’s permanent record, and will make it difficult for your child to make good progress in the first lessons of each day. Teach your child how to set and use an alarm clock, and keep the television turned off in the morning.
Plan family celebrations or trips with your child’s education in mind. These should take place during weekends or school holidays. Young people who are frequently absent from school are more likely to become involved in, or be a victim of crime and anti-social behaviour. The Thai Ministry of Education requires that school attendance does not fall below 80%. This is a critical figure because studies in the UK have shown that only 12% of students with below 80% school attendance achieve five or more GCSEs at grades A*-C including English and Maths, compared to 68% for students with attendance greater than 95%.

Literacy Week in PreSchool by Lisa Parsons, Head of PreSchool
Some of the parents who joined us for Literacy week in class; so far we have had Hayden’s Father read a Canadian story and Anisa’s Uncle read a Nepalese story. All the children listened and enjoyed the stories.
Children also volunteered, from year 3A/B & 4B, to read a story to the children, it was very sweet and all the preschool children listened to the stories.

Cosmos the Curious Whale Author Visits the Library by Nola Russell, Librarian
Author and Illustrator, Gail Clarke, visited the library on Wednesday and stayed for the entire day reading her most recent book “Cosmos the Curious Whale” to the youngest students and explaining how to create an illustrated children’s book to the older students. Everyone learned something about whales, penguins, polar bears and book creation. Many thanks to Gail for her spirited and fun presentations: it was a really good day!

Me Oh My! It was soooooo hard to judge these wonderful, lively and colourful doors! We found something we loved about each one!
We loved the 3D boat; the chairs and beds labeled ‘too hard’; the colourful garden creatures (a butterfly and caterpillar); the photographs in “It Started Last Tuesday Evening”; the wonderful yellow bus; the lively and colourful talking foxes; the tree (or is that a crocodile?); the castle in Harry Potter’s Quiddich, the original drawings for Mr. Stink; the fantastic mouse in Despereaux; the innovative presentation of I Read on an IPad; the textures of the Twits, and the composition of the Harry Potter train.
After a LOT of careful thought we decided that all the doors were GREAT and the VERY best of this great collection included the use of multi-media (collage, paint, 3D effects), it looks as though all the children were involved. We also really liked the brown paper background & the use of recycled materials and finally the crocodile in the tree is brilliant! … Year 3B with their ‘Watch Out There’s a Crocodile About.’ is the winner!

Non-Fiction Birds in Year 3 by Katja Clark, Year 3B Teacher
In English, Year 3 are learning about non-fiction texts and how to present information about birds. They have learned about the features of an information broadcast and have used what they have already learned about birds to create a mini broadcast.

Literacy Week in Year 5B by Daniel Redley, Year 5B Teacher Year 5 and Year 2 had lots of fun pairing up for their Buddy Reading during Literacy Week. Each of the Year 5 children chose 2 books to read to the Year 2 children. I was particularly impressed with some of the really great questions that the Year 2 children asked the older children about the books that were chosen.

Language Week by Richard Thézé, English Department
On Wednesday, Headstart secondary English Department marked International Book Day for the first time with a visit from the author of Rare Traits and Delusional Traits, David Clarke.
On Thursday, we held our first English Language Day. Students of the secondary school spent the morning in their house teams attending specially devised drama, poetry, singing and speech workshops. The central theme of the day was ‘The Power of the Word’. In the afternoon, there was a fun Language Day quiz followed by presentations of the work done during the morning.
Teachers were impressed with the high quality of much of the work and it was rewarding for us to see many students, for whom English is very much a second language, performing with confidence and clarity in English alongside their native-speaking peers.
The quiz and the presentations were competitive and were awarded points by a panel of judges. There is to be a trophy which will be awarded to the winning house which, this year, was Red House. The results can be seen in full below.
Our recognition of International Book Day was also marked with the award of a cinema ticket each for six key stage 3 students. The prize was given for reading the most number of books as part of the English Department’s key stage 3 reading programme that was introduced last October. The students are: Marc Baeuerle and Cecile Cortez from Year 7, Thanadol Tantivit and Jenny Park from Year 8 and Enzo Couture and Philip Westling from Year 9.
Visit from an Author by Rebecca Nicol, English Department**
Today we welcomed Mr David Clarke to Headstart to speak to Secondary students about writing and the position he held as a Forensic Scientist, prior to becoming an author. The presentation was very interesting and informative and I was so pleased to see so many students asking questions and listening intently to the information provided to them!
50 Baht Day
Students contributed 50 Baht towards Library resources raising a total of around 3,000 Baht.

Year 9 Thai Class Visits We Café with Kru Wi
This week Kru Wi and the Year 9 Thai As a First Language Class went on a field trip to the We Café. It is a pleasant restaurant and coffee shop as well as a local vegetable farm store. The We Café grow their own high quality chemical free, clean and healthy vegetables right here in Phuket.

ข้อแนะนำบางประการสำหรับการจัดตกแต่งสถานที่หรือสำหรับท่านผู้ที่สนใจที่จะเข้าร่วม ทางเราคิดว่าคงดีหากว่ามีซุ้มที่ ทำอาหาร ชิมชีส ดูหนัง ฟังเพลง หรือมีการเล่นเกมส์ อ่านหนังสือ เล่นฮอกกี้ บาบีคิว ศิลปะ แกะสลัก และอื่น บางซุ้มสามารถที่จะนำเสนอการละเล่นของประเทศของตนได้เช่นกัน เด็กๆที่เข้าร่วมคงจะมีความสุขและสนุกกับกิจกรรมที่จัดขึ้นในครั้งนี้
เพื่อแต่งแต้มสีสันให้งานในครั้งนี้สดในสวยงามเราหวังเป็นอย่างยิ่งว่าท่านผู้ที่เข้าร่วมในงานวันนั้นจะสวมชุดแต่งกายประจำชาติหรือแม้แต่การตกแต่งและการแสดงต่างๆของแต่ละซุ้มที่นำเสนอจะเป็นรูปแบบประจำชาติ

ในวันพฤหัสบดีที่ 6 มีนาคมที่ผ่านมาเป็นวันสัปดาห์ภาษา เราจัดกิจกรรมตามหัวข้อ The Power of the Word เป็นวันที่ประสบความสำเร็จอีกวันหนึ่งแต่จะเป็นการดีหากนักเรียนทุกคนในระดับมัธยมศึกษาร่วมกิจกรรมกับทางโรงเรียนในขณะที่นักเรียนไม่ได้ศึกษาในชั้นเรียนปกติของพวกเขาแต่พวกเขาจะเรียนรู้ทั้งวันภายในกลุ่มสีของพวกเขา ผู้ปกครองบางท่านเลือกให้นักเรียนไม่มาโรงเรียน พวกเขาเหล่านั้นจึงพลาดบทเรียนที่มีคุณค่าและสนุกสนานนี้ไป
