James Van Herzeele wins again!

Congratulations to James Van Heerzele for his win in the SuperKidz tournament in the boys and girls Under 14 category! James played 4 matches with bigger boys than him (James is 10) from Switzerland, 14Y, Thailand 14Y, 12Y and another Australian girl 16Y. James didn’t lose any matches!

Home and Life Activity Day at FS

Thanks to the initiative and concern of Mrs. Grace Walters, (mother of Shane in Year 5B) the Home & Life Orphanage from Phanga has been invited to visit FunStart for a fun day of activities on the 2nd of November from 10:00-3:00 pm! The 23 children and their 5 overseers will arrive from Phanga to enjoy swimming in the pool, games and art activities as well as a tasty lunch in the beautiful surroundings.

For this activity day to be a success we would like to call on volunteers to help out with the activities and donations for the following items:

Another way you can help is by donating towards the Home & Life monthly wish list!

These could be items that families might have in their house or closet that they are not using anymore.

Anything that cannot be used will be sold at their local markets and the funds received will go towards school and home costs.

Thank you for your help with this, every little bit goes a very long way and even if every parent/family could donate one bag of sugar or a bottle of oil it will add up very quickly!

Bus cost increase

Due to the rising costs of gasoline combined with the fact that HeadStart could not cover its’ transportation costs last year the school bus fee will increase as of Term2.

*Rawai bound buses will cost 1,100 Baht per week.

*Kamala/Patong/Cherng Talae will cost 1,300 Baht per week.

Please be informed that all parents presently sending their children to school on the school bus as well as all parents wishing to sign up their children for the new bus service as of the 1st of November (when the new school bus arrives) will need to sign a newly revised contract outlining the details of the school bus routine

Football Friendly

HeadStart attended a friendly football event with 3 other schools. The students played well and enjoyed the good exercise and fun!

House Football

On Thursday and Friday next week the House Football competitions will be played.

All student are encourage to play and give their house a chance to win the cup.

Students are to wear their house colours to play in.

The Deserted Island By: Karina Abday Y10a

The seagulls screeched distantly, muffled by the forceful roar of the waves clashing onto the sand, then retreating, creating white, frothy foam, to the impressive and vigorous ocean from whence it came. Another corkscrew of seawater sent vibrations to the shore. With every spray of water, there was a trace of salt in the air. The salt was carried away with the sand by the brisk wind. Further off the shallow strand, jagged rocks stuck up from the water, like shark fins, and the remains of a ship could be seen—sails dangled precariously from a rock suggested that a storm had hit the unfortunate ship.

The sun was concealed by the dark clouds, which were dark and which slowly progressed towards the small, vulnerable island.

Washed ashore on the beach was the debris of rotting wood, combined with the putrid stench of fish and seaweed—days old. The sand was grainy, like gravel, but it was at least warm. Small seashells lay shattered, trailing along the coast. It was deathly quiet on the beach—with only the wave’s bursts, even more aggressive than usual, and the seagull’s haunting cry.

Beyond the sloping bluffs of the beach, hidden, was the emerald-green undergrowth. The song of the cicadas erupted out of the lasting stillness, followed by a sudden rustling of the curling ferns that hinted that there was invisible life in the jungle. The gap between ocean and the jungle seemed so far off, the blast of the tide sounded like mere sighs of the ocean. From the traces of salt and the strong stench of the seaweed came a sweeter aroma of rain and a touch of honeyed nectar.

The scent of honeyed nectar became stronger inside the jungle, the moist ground was slippery and there were dried leaves that crunched every once in a while. The mating calls of the toucan rang out, echoing. The wail of a monkey screeched though the undergrowth, a stir in the leaves and bushes pointed to the fact that there were many other wild, savage animals that could be hidden among the trees and bushes. The trickling of water could be heard, a small stream of fresh, clean water, not salt water, which would be enough to ensure survival. The tall trees were so close together. Their thick leaves, green and luscious, blocked the sun’s rays from reaching the earth to encourage the growth of the small plants on the ground.

Poking out from the jungle was a solitary mountain, with trees leaning perilously on their sides. It was the center of the whole island, and seemed to be the most mysterious. The mountain was a steep and hard climb. Even though, it wasn’t that much of a tall mountain, the winds on the top would still have been ferocious, no mercy for anything or anyone. Near the top was a dark cave, like the caves that led dark down, deep in the underground where the bats and strange creatures roamed.

This island of the lonely mountain could be the harshest place for survival, or a life saver.

Cyber Bullying Awareness Campaign

As a school we have made a special effort to educate the students regarding bullying in the school but have also needed to upgrade our policies. The new policies now include special reference to cyber-bullying which includes bullying on or off the school premises. HeadStart school takes instances of bullying so seriously that it has now been moved from a Level 2 to a Level 3 incident. More details can be found in the Parents’ Handbook. Parents wishing to become involved in tackling cyber bullying at home and in the school should contact the Head of Secondary and the Parents’ Committee.

Don’t stand by, stand UP!

70% of students report seeing frequent bullying online.

Bullying starts with something, a kid being mistreated or angry, not getting the attention he feels he deserves or feeling left out by his peers. That’s when bullying starts. The bully feels he is treated wrongly, and instead of him fixing his own problems, he makes problems for other kids, by saying or doing things to hurt them. All this just to feel superior to the victim, it’s a joke for the bully, but not for others.

Cyber bullying is even worse, home is a place for you, if you’re bullied at school, home is your safe place. If you’re cyber bullied, you don’t even have your home.

Bullies can be anywhere; you have to stand up to them!

-Nearly 43% of kids have been bullied online. 1 in 4 has had it happen more than once.

-70% of students report seeing frequent bullying online.

-Over 80% of teens use a cell phone regularly, making it the most common medium for cyber bullying.

-68% of teens agree that cyber bullying is a serious problem.

-81% of young people think bullying online is easier to get away with than bullying in person.

-90% of teens who have seen social-media bullying say they have ignored it. 84% have seen others tell cyber bullies to stop.

-Only 1 in 10 victims will inform a parent or trusted adult of their abuse.

-Girls are about twice as likely as boys to be victims and perpetrators of cyber bullying.

-About 58% of kids admit someone has said mean or hurtful things to them online. More than 4 out 10 say it has happened more than once.

-About 75% have visited a website bashing another student.

-Bullying victims are 2 to 9 times more likely to consider committing suicide.

ทางโรงเรียนต้องขอขอบคุณ Mrs. Grace Walters ที่เชิญชวนให้ทางโรงเรียนได้ร่วมทำกิจกรรมดีๆกับทาง Home & Life โดยที่เราจะนำสถานเลี้ยงเด็กกำพร้า จากจังหวัดพังงามาทำกิจกรรมร่วมกันที่ฟันสตาร์ทในวันที่ 2 พฤศจิกายน ตั้งแต่เวลา 10.00 น. – 15.00 น. เด็กๆจำนวน 23 คน และผู้ดูแล 5 คน กิจกรรมในวันนั้นคือ ว่ายน้ำ, เล่นเกมส์, กิจกรรมศิลปะและร่วมรับประทานอาหารกลางวัน

การปรับราคาค่ารถโรงเรียน

เนื่องจากการปรับขึ้นราคาน้ำมันได้ส่งผลกระทบให้การเรียกเก็บค่าบริการรถโรงเรียนในปัจจุบันไม่พอกับค่าใช้จ่าย ทางโรงเรียนจึงขอปรับขึ้นราคาค่ารถโรงเรียนในเทอม 2 ดังนี้

• สายราไวย์ราคา 1,100 บาทต่อสัปดาห์ - สายกมลา, ป่าตอง, เชิงทะเล ราคา 1,300 บาทต่อสัปดาห์

สำหรับผู้ปกครองที่ได้ลงชื่อขอใช้รถโรงเรียนไว้ ทางโรงเรียนขอแจ้งให้ทราบว่ารถโรงเรียนคันใหม่จะเริ่มให้บริการในวันที่ 1 พฤศจิกายน และทางผู้ปกครองจะต้องลงชื่อในข้อตกลงการใช้รถโรงเรียนด้วย
