CfBT - ISQM Accreditation Report – May 2014 – HSIS by Jazon Edouard, CEO & Head of School

I am proud to be able to confirm that ‘HeadStart International School, Phuket, is recognised as having met the required standards for accreditation. The school has been awarded the CfBT Education Trust International School Quality Mark at Bronze level which reflects the satisfactory judgements described within [the] report.’ This truly is an achievement to be proud of! Our team’s united efforts, dedication and perseverance have paid off and are now officially validated and recognised through this successful accreditation.

CfBT Education Trust Accreditation (Council for British Teachers) http://www.cfbt.com/ .The purpose of accreditation is to bring about school improvement. Although accredited status is often perceived as an end in itself, the process is underpinned by the principle that the school self-evaluation activities in which schools engage, are of equal importance. In this sense, accreditation serves two goals:

• To provide a means by which parents and students are assured that the school has been judged by independent evaluators to meet rigorous quality standards;

• To support the school’s development through moderation of its own self-evaluation. The school improvement plan is crucial in ensuring on-going development. The accreditation provides recommendations for the school, which should be incorporated into the school improvement plan.

This accreditation is valid from May 22 2014 to May 22 2017. Please see the school website or call our office for a summary of the ISQM report.

Lost and Found Sale by Nola Russell, Librarian ** **

Now that many objects have found their original owners, we are looking to liquidate the rest of the items in Lost and Found. For 4 days only! From Mon., June 30 until Thurs., July 3, any single object may be bought for 20 Baht. One item per person per day. That means that on Thursday afternoon you could have found 4 incredible bargains.

The proceeds from the sale and any left-over items will be donated to the Staff Fund.

Please Note: If you didn’t retrieve your lost item last week, you will now have to pay 20 Baht to get it from the Lost and Found Sale this week. Change will NOT be provided: if you do not bring exact change then you will pay 50 or 100 Baht for the item.

Parenting Tip

Do you have a child whose school report always says: “Could do better”? Does he or she come home each term with poor grades - or C’s when you know they could be A’s? Based on your child’s ability, you assume that they should be achieving more highly in school. It is worrying, especially because you know how important it is for him or her to do well in order to get into a good university. You are concerned about the future, so you nag and accuse your child of laziness, lack of motivation and irresponsibility. You simply do not understand why they seem so uninterested in doing well, so you try everything you can think of to instil motivation. But try as you might, the situation doesn’t get better - in fact, it gets worse.

As a parent, it is difficult not to become involved in our children’s academic lives because we know how important it is. From our perspective, it makes no sense that they put things like friends or electronics devices before their school work. The truth is, most children are motivated, but not by what we think should motivate them. Look at it this way: your children are probably highly motivated when it comes to things that they are interested in, like video games, music, Facebook and which cool new jeans to buy. One thing is for certain: if you pressure your children in order to motivate them, it almost always makes things worse.

It is hard to imagine that a child who is underperforming at school is not just lazy, irresponsible and unmotivated. However, if you start believing these things about your child, you will simply get annoyed, frustrated, angry, and reactive which may lead to defiance and/or a struggle for power. Understand that children need to buy into and own the value of doing well for themselves.

If your child’s grades and work habits are not up to par, having a parent sit down with them to go over more difficult homework can be very helpful. Children who know that their parent finds their school work important and interesting are more likely to feel more motivated and strive to do better at school. Some extra attention from a parent could make a difference between a child staying a low-achiever and becoming an average-achiever.

For an average-achiever, a parent who becomes too involved or who worries too much can result in the undermining of the child’s sense of autonomy and motivation. If a child is achieving at the average level or grade expected for his or her age, or higher, it may be best to only occasionally ask if they need assistance.

Secondary News

Year 10 River Excursion by Richard Allenby, Secondary Teacher **

The year 10 Geography field trips finally took place! After a number of false starts for reasons like suppliers not delivering the pollution testing kits, CfBT inspection and exams, we eventually got year 10’s out to a field trip.

10A’s hypothesis was quite simple: that a river would become more polluted the further from the source and closer to the mouth you go. 10B’s was that given two bodies of water in public areas, the faster moving water will be less polluted.

We arrived at Kathu waterfall and I for one was surprised and disappointed at the amount of rubbish present. The Students looked for wildlife and found a lot. They tested and filtered samples of the water. 10A were driven to a point on the same river at edge of Phuket town near the river’s mouth where the whole process was repeated again. The results were very surprising. 10A’s hypothesis was declared incorrect!

10B’s second stop was at the park where they tested the water from the lake. I’m glad we took the rubber gloves as their hypothesis, in this case, was proven correct.

A Lecture about Thai values in Year 7 by Kru Kan, Thai as a First Language Teacher** **Last week, Khun Apple, a Thai parent, joined the Year 7 Thai As a First Language class and shared her knowledge about conservative values regarding dress, social behaviour, and sexuality in Thai society as part of the curriculum. Thank you, Khun Apple, for taking time out of your busy schedule to instruct our students.

Learning Verbs Through Song by Kru Sa, Thai Language Teacher** **Students in Thai As a Foreign Language class learning about verbs from the Thai song called: “Puak-rao bpen peaun gan (We Are Friends)”.

Awards in Mandarin Chinese Class by Honglian Wang, Mandarin Teacher** **Secondary students in Mandarin Chinese class got awards respectively for their excellence, improvement and great effort during the year 2013 - 2014.

รายการของหายที่เราพบเจอ ตอนนี้ก็มีเจ้าของมารับคืนไปหลายรายการแล้ว ของที่เหลือก็เปิดขายในช่วงเวลา 4 วันเท่านั้น คือวันจันทร์ที่ 30 มิถุนายน ถึงวันพฤหัสฯที่ 3 กรกฎาคม ของราคาชิ้นละ 20 บาท จำกัดว่าท่านจะซื้อได้วันละ 1 ชิ้น เท่านั้น

รายได้ทั้งหมดและของที่เหลือ จะบริจาคเข้ากองทุนช่วยเหลือพนักงาน

หมายเหตุ เจ้าของที่มิได้ มารับของคืนในสัปดาห์ก่อน ถ้าจะมารับคืนตอนนี้ จะต้องซื้อในราคาชิ้นละ 20 บาท ต้องเตรียมเงินมาพอดี 20 บาท เนื่องจากทางเราไม่มีเงินทอน ค่ะ

เด็กนักเรียน Y10 ได้ไปตรวจเช็คสภาพน้ำในคลองบางใหญ่ ในหลายๆช่วงของลำน้ำ

นักเรียนY10A ตั้งสมมุติฐานว่า น้ำบริเวณต้นน้ำมีคุณภาพดีกว่า ทางปลายๆน้ำ

ส่วน นักเรียน Y10Bให้ข้อเปรียบเทียบว่า น้ำจะมีคุณภาพน้ำก็ดีกว่า ในบริเวณน้ำไหลเร็วกว่า

ตอนที่ไปถึงน้ำตกกะทู้ พวกเราเสียความรู้สึกมากที่เห็นขยะเกลื่อนกลาด เด็กๆสำรวจหาสัตว์ต่าง ก็พบเจอมากมาย แล้วก็สุ่มตัวอย่างเช็คสภาพน้ำ

นักเรียน Y10A ไปสุ่มตัวอย่างตรวจสอบคุณภาพน้ำที่บริเวณใกล้ปากแม่น้ำในตัวเมืองภูเก็ต ได้ผลเป็นที่ประหลาดใจมาก นั่นหมายความว่าสมมุติฐานของเด็ก Y10A ไม่ถูกต้อง

ส่วน นักเรียน Y10B ไปสุ่มตัวอย่างตรวจสอบคุณภาพน้ำ บึงน้ำในสวนสาธารณะ ผลออกมาตรงกับสมมุติฐานที่นักเรียนได้ตั้งไว้จริงๆ

การบรรยายเรื่องคุณค่าของธรรมเนียมไทยสำหรับนักเรียนชั้น ** Year 7**

เมื่อสัปดาห์ที่แล้ว คุณแม่แอปเปิล ได้สละเวลา เข้ามาบรรยายในชั้นเรียนภาษาไทย(แบบที่ภาษาที่ 1) ของนักเรียน Y7 ในสาระเรื่องคุณค่าของขนมธรรมเนียมประเพณีอันดีงามของเมืองไทยเรา ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเรื่องการแต่งกาย พฤติกรรมในสังคม และเพศสัมพันธ์ในสังคมไทย

ชั้นเรียนภาษาไทย(แบบภาษาต่างประเทศ) นักเรียนได้เรียนคำกริยาต่างๆ จากเนื้อเพลงไทยที่ชื่อว่า “พวกเราเป็นเพื่อนกัน”
