Reflections

Parenting has been one of the most exciting but challenging aspects of my life. I have enjoyed such pleasure in watching each of my five sons grow yet have also had moments of utter frustration and despair. A highlight of my career as a mother was facing the challenge of teaching my children to read. I considered this a personal challenge and took extreme pride and satisfaction in investing the time and resources to do so. While many parents wait until the child is enrolled in school to even begin thinking about learning to read, I have always felt that children are ready to learn so much younger.

Being a young and idealistic mother I researched many different methods of how to teach my boys to read and came across a book by Glenn Doman called ‘How to Teach Your Baby to Read’. This book promotes sight reading from as young as two months old. While the book is slightly outdated (I am not writing this article as a promotion for this book) I figured that if I applied the theory and was consistent I would succeed. I was right! 15 minutes a day of fun reading activities, as described in Glenn Doman’s book, led me on the road to success. Darren, Brendon and Laurent, my three eldest sons, could read newspapers by the age of three-and-a-half. By the time the fourth and fifth boys came along I found it more of a challenge to keep up with the routine but continued to apply the same principles of consistency and starting early with our young learners in the original ‘Homeschool’ set up during HeadStart’s early beginnings.

Here are some things I learned from Glenn Doman’s book regarding teaching children at a very young age that I think will benefit you and your children.

1. Parents are a child’s first and best teacher. Invest time and resources into speaking with them, reading to them before bed and explaining the world around them as you go.

2. Start as early as possible. Glenn Doman suggests that the most crucial time for children’s development is the period from birth to six years of age.

1. Respect your child and truly believe in him/her. A Child should always be respected and taught in a trusting environment. We should not underestimate the learning and comprehension ability of a child especially babies and toddlers. Glenn Doman also suggests never dumbing down a concept, facts, or making things up assuming that the baby is too young to understand.

2. A parent needs to plan sessions and be consistent and have a structured schedule. Organise reading time with your child every night before bed, practice his/her letters of the alphabet or words, review the multiplication tables on your way to school. ** Be consistent. ** Keep a daily schedule and stick to it. **

Students from Y7, Y8 and Y9 have the opportunity to take part in the PHUKET ISLAND MATHS CHALLENGE!

Students will join together with others from BIS (British International School) and PIA (Phuket International Academy) to solve puzzles and put their problem-solving talents to work in a day of collaboration and competition to see who will lift the PIMC Trophy (as well as individual and team awards).

There will be:

• Maths Challenge questions - a number puzzle solving round - a chance to solve a mystery based on the famous “Einstein Logic Puzzle” - a quickfire quizz - a memory challenge

AND

• a Maths Trail around the grounds of BIS. - There is no cost to students and lunch is being provided at BIS. - Any budding mathemagicians, problem-solvers or young people who simply like to get to the bottom of things can give their names to Mr Kaushal or Mr Bayford, or they can put their names on the sign-up sheets around school.

Year 9 Visits the Meteorological Center by Yvonne Ely, Chemistry teacher Thursday 29th Jan 9A set off to discover the wonders of the Meteorological Center in Phuket. Located near the airport, the bus journey was smooth and relaxing due to Doody’s careful selection of eclectic tunes and Sea helpfully pointing out various establishments that one must visit, especially anything to do with bicycles and good food!

We received a very warm welcome from the lovely people at the center and we had a firsthand look at some of the instruments and technology they use on a daily basis to monitor the weather and make predictions for the Andaman region. The staff were very knowledgeable and happy to answer our questions.

While most of the students interest was mainly captured by the giant weather balloon, others, namely JH, were most enthusiastic about the podium and microphone! We then undertook a 7 floor trek to reach the dizzy heights of the top of the weather tower, the view was spectacular, airport and sea in front and surrounded by lushes green mountains.

ความรู้เป็นของขวัญอันล้ำค่าที่สุด ที่ท่านจะหาให้ลูกได้ ให้ความรู้แก่ลูกให้มากเท่าๆกับให้อาหาร ― Glenn Doman, จากหนังสือเรื่องวิธีสอนลูกเรียนคณิตศาสตร์

การเลี้ยงดูลูก เป็นช่วงที่ตื่นเต้นและท้าทายช่วงหนึ่งในชีวิตของดิฉัน เป็นความรื่นรมย์ที่ได้เฝ้าดูลูกๆทั้ง5 คน ค่อยๆเติบโตขึ้นทีละคน แม้จะมีบางช่วงที่รู้สึกท้อแท้สิ้นหวังก็ตามที จุดเด่นชัดในชีวิตความเป็นแม่ของดิฉันคือต้องเผชิญหน้ากับความท้าทายในการสอนให้ลูกอ่านหนังสือ ดิฉันมีความสุขและภูมิใจเป็นอย่างยิ่ง ในน้ำพักน้ำแรงที่ทุ่มเทลงไปเพราะถือว่าเป็นสิ่งท้าทายสำหรับส่วนตัวของดิฉัน ในขณะที่พ่อแม่ส่วนใหญ่มักจะรอจนลูกเข้าโรงเรียนก่อน แล้วจึงเพิ่งจะมาคิดถึงเรื่องการอ่านหนังสือ ดิฉันเชื่อเสมอว่าเด็กๆพร้อมที่จะหัดอ่านหนังสือตั้งแต่เล็กๆมากกว่านี้

เนื่องจากเป็นคุณแม่ยังสาวและเต็มไปด้วยอุดมการณ์ ดิฉันจึงศึกษาค้นคว้าหาวิธีต่างๆในการสอนลูกๆอ่านหนังสือ แล้วก็มาเจอหนังสือของ”เกล็น โดแมน” เรื่องวิธีการสอนลูกให้อ่านหนังสือ หนังสือนี้กระตุ้นการอ่านในเด็กเล็กมากๆ ขนาดอายุแค่ 2 เดือน แม้ว่าหนังสือเล่มนี้จะค่อนข้างล้าสมัยก็ตามที (ดิฉันไม่ได้เขียนบทความนี้เพื่อที่จะโฆษณาหนังสือเล่มนี้นะคะ) แต่ดิฉันคิดว่าถ้าทำตามทฤษฎีอย่างสม่ำเสมอก็จะประสบความสำเร็จ ก็จริงอย่างที่ดิฉันคิด คือทำกิจการการอ่านวันละ 15 นาทีตามที่ระบุไว้ในหนังสือนี้ เป็นเส้นทางแห่งความสำเร็จ ลูกคนโต 3 คน คือ Darren, Brendon และ Laurent สามารถอ่านหนังสือพิมพ์ได้ตั้งแต่อายุแค่ 3 ขวบครึ่ง ต่อมาเมื่อมีลูกชายคนที่ 4 และคนที่ 5 แม้ว่าภาระมากขึ้นก็ตาม ก็ยังพยายามปฏิบัติตามตารางและหลักการเดิมอย่างสม่ำเสมอ ใน”โรงเรียนบ้าน” แห่งแรกของ HeasdStart ที่เปิดรับเด็ก

สิ่งต่างๆที่ดิฉันได้มาจากหนังสือของ Glenn Doman เกี่ยวกับการสอนเด็กเล็กๆ ซึ่งจะเป็นประโยชน์แก่ท่านและลูกๆ เช่น

1. พ่อแม่คือครูคนแรกและครูที่ดีที่สุดของลูก ดังนั้น โปรดใช้เวลาก่อนนอน พูดคุยกับลูก อ่านให้ลูกฟัง และค่อยอธิบายเรื่องรอบๆตัวให้ลูกฟังไปด้วย

2. ให้เริ่มสอนลูกอ่านตั้งแต่เล็กๆเท่าที่จะเริ่มได้ Glenn Doman แนะว่า ช่วงวัยที่มีการพัฒนามากที่สุดคือ แรกเกิดจนถึง 6 ขวบ

3. พ่อแม่ต้องเชื่อใจและเชื่อมั่นในตัวลูก เด็กควรจะได้รับความเอาใจใส่และสอนในบรรยากาศที่เค้ารู้สึกปลอดภัย เราจะต้องไม่คาดการณ์ต่ำเกินไปในศักยภาพการเรียนรู้และเข้าใจของเด็ก โดยเฉพาะเด็กอ่อน Glenn Doman ยังแนะนำอีกด้วยว่า ห้ามทำทุกอย่างให้งายๆไปกว่าความเป็นจริง โดยคิดเหมาเอาเองว่าเด็กยังเล็กเล็กเกินกว่าที่จะเข้าใจ

4. พ่อแม่ จำเป็นต้องจัดช่วงตารางเวลาการเรียนการสอนและทำอย่างสม่ำเสมอ จัดแบ่งเวลาช่วงก่อนเข้านอนของทุกคืน ในการอ่านหนังสือกับลูก และฝึกฝนตัวอักษรหรือคำ และทบทวนสูตรคูณช่วงขณะกำลังเดินทางไปโรงเรียน ต้องคงเส้นคงวาและมีวินัย

• คำว่าการเรียนนั้นไปพ้องกับการศึกษา ซึ่ง”การศึกษาเริ่มเมื่ออายุ 6 ขวบ – ในขณะที่การเรียนเริ่มตั้งแต่เกิด“!* -Glenn Doman

เสื้อแจ็คเก็ตแบบใหม่ของโรงเรียน ขอแนะนำเสื้อแจ๊คเก็ตใหม่ของโรงเรียน สีกรมท่า มีโลโก้ของโรงเรียนที่หน้าอกซ้าย ปรับขนาดรอบเอวและข้อมือ และมีห่วงไว้แขวนเสื้อ ท่านสามารถซื้อได้ที่ห้องขายชุดนักเรียน และตั้งแต่เดือนสิงหาคมนี้เป็นต้นไป นักเรียนจำเป็นต้องมีเสื้อแจ๊คเก็ตนี้ ทุกคน เพราะถือเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของเครื่องแบบนักเรียน

**การนำเสนอโปรแกรมสอนอ่านออกเสียง Bug Club Phonics **ครู Els Bellon ได้นำเสนอการสอนลูกอ่านออกเสียง และเน้นให้สอนการอ่านเพิ่มเติมที่บ้าน ขอขอบคุณทุกๆท่านที่เข้าร่วมอบรมและให้การสนับสนุน !

อาสาสมัครจากโครงการคืนชะนีสู่ป่า ได้ให้เกียรติมาเยี่ยมโรงเรียนและพูดคุยกับเราหลังพิธีเคารพธงชาติ เช้าวันนี้ คุณไมเคิล จากโครงการคืนชะนีสู่ป่า ได้ให้เกียรติมาเยี่ยมโรงเรียนและพูดคุยกับเราหลังพิธีเคารพธงชาติ ได้เล่าให้พวกเราฟังถึงวิธีการอันโหดร้ายในการไปจับลูกชะนีมาเครื่องมือหากินกับ ขอให้ทุกๆได้มีส่วนช่วยในการหยุดการกระทำเช่นนี้ เหล่าอาสาสมัครพยายามช่วยเหลือชะนีผู้โชคร้ายเหล่านี้ให้ได้มีชีวิตที่ดีขึ้น และวันนี้ชาวเฮดสตาร์ททุกคนก็ช่วยได้ โดยบริจาคเงิน 50บาทในวันศุกร์หน้า ซึ่งเป็นวันที่โรงเรียนเปิดโอกาสให้นักเรียนทำสาธารณประโยชน์แลกกับการได้แต่งตัวตามสบายมาเรียน ทุกวันศุกร์แรกของเดือน พวกเราทุกๆคนก็ช่วยได้โดยบริจาคเงิน เพื่อนำไปซื้ออาหารและสิ่งจำเป็นสำหรับโครงการคืนชะนีสู่ป่า

วันชาติออสเตรเลีย เช้าวันนี้คณะนักเรียนและครูชาวออสเตรเลียได้ร่วมกันร้องเพลงชาติออสเตรเลีย ในช่วงพิธีเคารพธงชาติ เพื่อฉลองเนื่องในวันครบรอบวันชาติออสเตรเลีย คือวันที่ 26 มกราคม

เด็กห้อง Reception ไปทัศนศึกษาที่สวนผีเสื้อ โดย *Laura Baillie, Reception teacher * เมื่อวันอังคาร เด็กห้อง Reception A และ B ออกไปทัศนศึกษาที่สวนผีเสื้อ เพื่อที่จะได้เรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับวงจรการเจริญเติบโตของผีเสื้อทุกขั้นตอนคือ ไข่, หนอน, ดักแด้ แล้วจึงกลายเป็นผีเสื้อหลากสีอันสวยงาม เราได้เห็น แมลงชนิดอื่นๆอย่างใกล้ๆด้วย

เด็ก Year 2A เรียนเรื่องอุณหภูมิ โดย Lindsay Benner, Year 2A teacher เด็กYear 2A ได้เรียนเรื่องสภาพอากาศ และทดลองใช้ เทอร์มอมิเตอร์ (Thermometer) วัดอุณหภูมิ ของสิ่งต่างๆ น้ำเย็น น้ำร้อน ร่างกาย และอุณหภูมิ ในห้อง และภายนอก !

กิจกรรมในห้องสมุดของเด็ก Year 3B เรื่องตัวอีกัวน่า โดย *Katja Clark, Year 3B teacher * เด็กห้อง Y3B ทำกิจกรรมแสดงเรื่อง ‘Walking with my iguana’ โดย Brian Jones พวกเค้าได้เรียนเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับสัตว์เลื้อยคลานที่มีลักษณะคล้ายกับไดโนเสาน้อยๆ ซึ่งคนมักจะนำไปใช้หาประโยชน์ใส่ตน

เด็ก Year 3B ทำการทดลองเนื้อกระดาษ โดย Katja Clark, Year 3B teacher เด็ก Y3B ได้ทำการทดลอง ทดสอบกระดาษหลากหลายชนิด ว่ากระดาษประเภทไหนมีคุณสมบัติซับน้ำได้ดีที่สุด

ประเพณีการกินเครป โดย Francoise laosuwan, French teacher for Primary สัปดาห์หน้า ในวิชาภาษาฝรั่งเศส เราจะฉลองประเพณีการกินเครปแห่งชาติ ซึ่งตรงกับวันที่ 2-3 กุมภาพันธ์ ขอขอบคุณ MS Severine และ Virginie ที่มาจะร่วมกิจกรรมด้วย ท่านที่สนใจจะเข้าร่วมกิจกรรมนี้ โปรดติดต่อครู Francoise ได้ที่: [email protected] ในฝรั่งเศสนั้นจะรับประทานขนมเครป ใน ประเพณีการกินเครปมเครปแห่งชาติ ซึ่งตรงกับวันที่ 2 กุมภาพันธ์ เดิมทีวันนี้เป็นวันเฉลิมฉลองพระแม่มารี ซึ่งในเวลาต่อมา ได้กลายเป็นประเพณีการกินเครปแห่งขาติ มีความเชื่อกันว่าตอนทำเครปจะต้องกำเงินเหรียญทองไว้ในมือแล้วโยนกลับด้านเครป…ถ้าไม่หล่นก็จะทำให้มีความอุดมสมบูรณ์ เจริญเฟื่องฟูไปตลอดปี

กิจกรรม DofE Award ในเดือนมกราคม ** โดย Mark Goodman, Head of Secondary ส่วนหนึ่งของกิจกรรม Duke of Edinburgh award ที่นักเรียน year 10 ต้องทำคือช่วยเหลือสังคม นักเรียนบางคนเลือกกิจกรรมช่วยสอนเด็กกำพร้า เล่นกีฬา สอนศิลปะ งานฝีมือต่างๆ กิจกรรมนี้จัดทำในเช้าวันเสาร์ เดือนละ 2 เสาร์ๆละ 2 ชั่วโมง นักเรียนจะเข้ามาที่โรงเรียน เพื่อสอนให้เด็กกำพร้าเหล่านี้วาดภาพสีน้ำ การ์ตูน และวาดภาพร่าง พอเลิกเรียนนักเรียนของเราก็จะแจกของเล่นให้เด็กกำพร้าเหล่านี้เป็นกำลังใจให้พวกเค้า ​กิจกรรมนี้ยังรวมถึงช่วยสอนฟุตบอลให้เด็กกำพร้าจากบ้านตะวันฉาย เป็นประจำ สัปดาห์ละครั้ง **การแข่งขันคณิตศาสตร์ โดย *Raman Kaushal, Head of Maths Faculty in Secondary * นักเรียน ชั้น Y7, Y8 และ Y9 ได้เข้าแข่งขันคณิตศาสตร์ ในรายการ PHUKET ISLAND MATHS CHALLENGE!

พวกเราได้รับการต้อนรับอย่างอบอุ่น จากเจ้าหน้าที่ของศูนย์ ได้เห็นอุปกรณ์ เครื่องมือของจริง ที่ใช้ในการเฝ้าสังเกตุลักษณะการเปลี่ยนแปลงของอากาศในแถบชายฝั่งทะเลอันดามัน เพื่อนำมาพยากรณ์ในพื้นที่นี้ บุคคลากรที่นั่นมีความรอบรู้อย่างดีและยินดีตอบคำถามทุกอย่าง

นักเรียนส่วนใหญ่อัศจรรย์ใจกับลูกโป่งยักษ์วัดความดันอากาศ ส่วนบางคน ยกตัวอย่างเช่น JH ขึ้นไปยืนบนแท่นและทดลองเสียงไมโครโฟน ! จากนั้นเราได้ขึ้นบันไดไปที่ยอดของหอวัดอากาศ อยู่บนชั้นที่ 7 ชมวิวสนามบินและทะเลซึ่ง มีเทือกเขาสีเขียวอยู่เบื้องหลังสวยงามมาก

เสร็จกิจกรรมที่นั่น ทุกคนหิ้วท้องกลับมารับประทานอาหารกลางวัน อันโอชะ ที่โรงเรียนของเรา ได้ความรู้เพิ่มเติมและสนุกสนานกันทั่วหน้าค่ะ การใช้ชีวิตในประเทศไทยและการพูดภาษาไทย โดย Kru Sue

การใช้ชีวิตอยู่ในประเทศไทยโดยที่พูดภาษาไทยได้บ้างนั้นมีประโยชน์มาก นักเรียนชั้น Y 7 ได้เรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับการใช้ภาษาไทยในร้านอาหาร เช่น การสั่งอาหาร นักเรียนได้ฝึกใช้ภาษาไทยเป็นประโยคสั้นๆเมื่ออยู่ในร้านอาหาร

นักเรียนชั้น Year 4 เรียนเรื่องเสียง โดย Khru Kan นักเรียนชั้น Year 4 ในกลุ่มโปรแกรมไทยกลางเรียนเรื่อง เสียงสระ อิ โดยการแยกส่วนคำเป็น 3 ส่วน (พยัญชนะ+สระ+ตัวสะกด)

ในสัปดาห์นี้นักเรียนชั้น Reception ได้เรียนเรื่อง ผลไม้ เด็กๆได้เรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับชื่อผลไม้ไทย, ระบายสีรูปภาพผลไม้ต่างๆ และร้องเพลง ผลไม้

วันพฤหัสบดีที่ 3 กุมภาพันธ์ บาสเก็ตบอลหญิงรุ่นอายุไม่เกิน 16 ปี กับ โรงเรียนไทหัว

การแข่งขันฟุตบอลระหว่าง HSIS v BISPที่โรงเรียนนานาชาติบริติช

รุ่นอายุไม่เกิน 9 ปี, รุ่นอายุไม่เกิน 11 ปี และ ฟุตบอลหญิง

นักกีฬาทุกคนให้ไปพร้อมกันที่โรงเรียนนานาชาติบริติชเวลา 09.00 น. ในวันเสาร์ที่ 7 กุมภาพันธ์ และการแข่งขันจะเสร็จสิ้นเวลา 11.30 น. รายละเอียดเพิ่มเติมจะส่งไปยังอีเมล์ของผู้ปกครอง
