Dina Kalmakhelidze

Russian Coordinator
[email protected]

My name is Dina and I've been working as a teacher in Phuket for 10 years. When I was finishing school, I knew of the career path I should take. My mother and grandmother have been teaching Russian language for 35 and 55 years accordingly. I loved spending time at school and university environments and loved when I was given tasks. I felt proud I could take part at school life and help them, my first and best teachers. Learning is an enjoyable experience and I love when children arrive and leave school with smiles on their faces and I feel I make a positive impact on the student’s life and they also influence me. When you are with kids, you see the world through their eyes and immerse in the world of magic, creativity and laughter. I love teaching as I think it is one of the most rewarding jobs in the world and I love making a difference in my students’ lives. I know children learn best when they enjoy their environment, when it is stimulating and when they are given opportunities, promoting a lifelong love of learning where they can learn, grow, discuss and are not afraid to make mistakes as they can learn and find something new out of them. I feel my role is more than just teaching Russian language; I feel it is about supporting the children, teaching them to understand the culture and applying their knowledge to their daily life. Then I feel my role is accomplished.

--- I've been teaching for 17 years now. Every morning I am happy to go to work as I know my students, who are discovering a new world are waiting for me. Their success and outlook depends largely on me so I take my job seriously. My work brings me a sense of fullness of life because it is the most creative profession. Being a teacher means delving into your own childhood with each child as we see the world through his or her eyes. I wanted to become a teacher when I was at school and I have never regretted the choice I have made. The most interesting thing for me is the world of childhood. I have always been studying with interest both at school and university. I have read many books and I really wanted to share all the interesting things I learned. I taught Russian, literature, history, I opened primary schools, worked with authors of various methodologies in Russia, Montenegro and Thailand. Over all these years I have learned that teachers are people with a huge, pure and kind heart, boundless patience, strict and gentle, and people who are trusted.

Kanokwan Tantawanit

Thai Teacher
[email protected]

Hi, my name is Kanokwan Tantawanit or Kru Pla. I am a huge fan of reading as well as yoga and meditation. Moreover, I definitely love to travel, eat and teach! What I have always believed and proved to myself is that “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” - Benjamin Franklin In 2012, I graduated with second-class honours from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, achieving my Bachelor Degree in Spanish. I take pride in studying at Thailand’s first university founded over the century, and ranked by the QS World University Rankings 2021 as the top in the country and listed in the top 50 universities in Asia. There, I have also earned a massive number of course credits in English and Thai throughout the programme with my passionate interest in languages. Experiences in hospitality for a number of years afterwards have developed my interpersonal and communication skills, but never seemed to fulfil my potential and my passion. As the saying goes “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life!” reminded me of the joy I had as a part-time tutor during my time at the university. In the pursuit of my new goal, I had a fascinating glimpse into the world of international education while being part of the supporting team at Top Scholars, a personalised college prep in Bangkok. Back to my hometown, I eventually became a full time English teacher in a private school in Phuket where I had a memorable experience teaching the students in Prathom 5 and Prathom 6 for over a year, helping many of them to get into high schools of their dreams, but most importantly bringing out the best in my students. I am wholeheartedly committed to ongoing professional development, so I enrolled in a Graduate Diploma Program in Teaching Profession, after which I officially earned the teaching license from the Teachers’ Council of Thailand. My three years at HeadStart International School have been fantastic! I particularly enjoyed my Thai classes in Foundation. They are super adorable! I wish to continue to utilise my enthusiasm for teaching to grow together with the school. I am excitedly looking forward to next academic year, teaching Thai Foreign Language Programme both academically and culturally. It's always worth it to see the students learn, laugh, have fun, and successfully navigate learning and life, and so I couldn’t be happier.

你好(Ni Hao)! My name is Wei Wang and I come from Anhui, China. I first came to Phuket in 2009 when I was studying for my master’s degree in Jinan University(暨南大学), China. I taught in Prince of Songkla University for 1 year to get the experience to finish my essay. It was a nice experience and people were very friendly here. Since then, I’ve made up my mind to come again for a job. After my graduation, I got a job in Khonkaen for teaching Mandarin to primary students; I love my students and learned a lot more Thai there as people there do not speak much English. I stayed in Khonkaen for 2 years, and then try to look for a job in other places in Thailand. And I found HeadStart! After working at HeadStart for seven years, I have seen the growing of the school and me. The students here are lovely and they have a passion to learn Mandarin. They experienced Chinese culture and tasted Chinese food during traditional festivals. They are also curious to learn a totally different writing system (汉字Chinese character). Learning Mandarin not only let them to get to know another language, but also broaden their eyes and teaches them to look into things in different ways. My Mandarin classroom is always filled with laughs as I teach them in a creative way. There is an old saying in China “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand. (不闻不若闻之,闻之不若见之,见之不若知之,知之不若行知)Students are encouraged to involve themselves as much as possible in class. I look forward to see all of you in my Mandarin class!

My name is Banchao Tian and I have been working at HeadStart since January 2019. I am from China and grew up in the southwest in a small tourism city called Guilin. I studied at Jinan University in Guangzhou, gaining a master degree in Linguistics and a certificate of Teaching Mandarin as a Foreign Language. I have taught Mandarin to secondary students at public schools in Bangkok and Phuket for 8 years prior to my move to HeadStart. In my teaching practice, besides delivering the knowledge and skills of Mandarin, it is my aim to inspire and motivate my students to learn the language. I believe the most efficient language learning happens through students’ own engagement and self-effort. Besides, I believe culture is a crucial concept in language teaching, in a certain sense, language learning is culture learning. Exposure to culture will in turn inspire students' interest in learning the language as well. In my teaching, I often introduce aspects of Chinese culture to my students, e.g. Chinese paper-cut, Chinese calligraphy, Beijing opera, Chinese Food and so on. Outside of classroom I enjoy reading and spending time with my family and cats. I’m a tennis lover and always want to play whenever I have free time.
