The School is privately owned by shareholders and the Board of Directors has delegated the long term strategy and planning of the school to the School Board and the day-to-day running of the school to the Senior Management Team which consists of a CEO, School Director, Director of Studies, Head of Secondary and Head of Primary (who are supported by Deputy Heads in each school phase).

Since joining HeadStart International School as Director of Studies, in August 2014, I have been genuinely impressed by the hard work and commitment of all those involved in making HeadStart a place where students are inspired to have the ‘love of learning’ described in the school’s motto. Recent results show the strides the school is making in terms of academic results and the fantastic achievements our students have made in their studies. Having just successfully completed the EDT Silver accreditation and with the move to I strongly believe that HeadStart International School is well on the way to becoming one of the best schools on the island, providing the highest standards in teaching and learning. The next few years will be a truly exciting time for all those involved with the school. Having had a successful Teaching career in the UK for a number of years and having worked in various different management positions, my wife Amy and I made the decision to move to Thailand in 2012 where I worked at an International School in Bangkok. The opportunity to make a real impact at HeadStart and to help shape the future successes of the school drew me to move to Phuket. I am relishing the opportunity that being a key part of the HeadStart team entails and the chance to help shape the future successes of the school. On a personal level, I am a keen sportsman and have an interest in many sports both as a spectator or participant. A highlight for me was having a leadership position for Event Services at the London 2012 Olympic Games. I am a keen golfer and I am a member of the main Bangkok Expat golf societies. Thailand is blessed with many amazing courses and I look forward to now playing those in Phuket. My wife Amy is a teacher in the Foundation department. I look forward to working with staff, students and parents alike to ensure that we continue to build on the existing successes of the school. My name is Sontana Baci. I come from Songkhla, the deep south of Thailand. I joined HeadStart International School in 2010. I hold a bachelor of Thai Language Education degree as well as a Master degree in Educational Management. HeadStart International School welcomes all international students and Thais. With over 33 nationalities represented in the student body, you will soon feel the mixture of our international progamme as well as the appreciation that we are living in Thailand. We strongly believe that HeadStart is a ‘family’ school, where our youngest and oldest students study and live happily side by side. Our favourable pupil-teacher ratio means that each child is an individual and receives the needed academic and social support. HeadStart International School is a recognized Cambridge International Examinations centre and all students sit the IGCSE examinations here in May/June and November sessions. The Cambridge IGCSE is the world’s most popular international curriculum for 14-16 year olds, leading to globally recognized and valued Cambridge IGCSE qualifications. Students who have completed Year 11 with 5 passes at least at grade C, receives a certificate that is the equivalent to M.6 in Thailand This will enable them entrance into many international university programmes in Thailand. As the Head of the Secondary School at HeadStart, I am extremely honoured to be part of this fantastic team. The first year of my Headship has been one of the most interesting and rewarding of my life. It is great to think I can come to work every day smiling and ready for my staff and learners to reach for the stars, knowing that together we can achieve amazing things. As you know I am an experienced senior leader and Arts specialist who has worked in education for over 20 years. I am qualified to Masters Level in Education from the prestigious Institute of Education (IOE) in London’s Russell Square. I have a PGCE from the University of Birmingham and a BA (Hons) from the University of Manchester. In addition, I have also have been a participant of senior leadership training with the IOE and took part in “Leading from the Middle Training” which takes a year to complete. I have international teaching experience in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. I have British teaching and leadership experience in London as a Senior Leader (Vice Principal) in charge of whole school teaching and learning. I have worked in London as an advisor to the “Building Schools for the Future” programme. The achievement of students academically, socially and emotionally is extremely important to me. This is why I am an advocate of Guy Claxton’s Building Learning Power ethos which we are embedding into our daily lessons. I am interested in developing the whole child and ensuring students leave HeadStart as confident young people that are responsible global citizens and possible future leaders. Over the years, I have been fortunate to touch the lives of many students, some of whom now as adults have sought me out to thank me for the work I have done with them and to tell me that I made a difference. This is the most rewarding part of the job for any teacher. I strongly believe in a happy, positive school with happy students and staff as this results in the best progress for all. It is the equipping of staff with the latest up dates in international pedagogy, especially teaching and learning techniques, that ensures staff development, smooth and interesting classroom delivery, plus clear goals and outcomes for our students. I am passionate about corporate and global responsibility; I believe in promoting charitable giving in school. I also enjoy both the performance arts and the visual arts, am an accomplished mixed media artist, having had exhibitions in both the UK and Africa. I am also an amateur singer who enjoys performing live. I love nature and the outdoors. I feel strongly about green issues and teaching students about our beautiful planet and natural wonders that we must preserve for our future generations.

My name is James and I am now entering my fifth year working at HeadStart International School. I am from the UK and grew up in the southeast in a small town called Ashford. I studied at Nottingham Trent University, gaining a degree in Business and Computing for Sciences. I returned to University in 2010 to complete my PGCE in Secondary ICT. I remained in Nottingham and taught to a wide range of children from varying backgrounds and ethnicities in a successful inner city school for two years prior to my move to Thailand. I am a great believer in personal learning and in providing students with opportunities to flourish both inside and outside of the classroom. When students enter my classroom they are encouraged to explore the subject for themselves, using past experiences in the knowledge that they are in a secure learning environment. I believe passionately in getting to know the individual personality of my students and strive to allow them to express themselves in the most creative and innovative ways possible. I am also committed to creating a safe and challenging learning environment where all students are part of a positive-learning experience. I am looking forward to getting started this academic year at the school continuing in my role as deputy head of secondary and hope to build on the successes already present in the school and continue to develop an inclusive learning environment.

Hello to the HeadStart community. I am delighted to be joining such a vibrant International School at such an exciting time in its development and I look forward to getting to know the children, parents and staff during this first year of what I trust will be the beginning of many more to come. I originally worked as a Stockbroker and then in Commercial Finance in the United Kingdom before I retrained, completing a four year BEd (Hons) degree at Sheffield Hallam University in the United Kingdom and have spent sixteen years teaching in the Independent sector there; the last seven years as Deputy Head of a Preparatory School in Hertfordshire. There are three guiding principles which I try to develop in all children and live my life by, these are: Self Reliance; Positive Thinking; and Leaving people and places in a better state than when you found them. I believe that in order to prepare our children to make a valuable contribution as citizens in their global society following these guiding principles will stand them in good stead; especially as it is expected that they will be using technologies as yet undiscovered and working in jobs and dealing with problems that have not yet been created. My wife and I have travelled many times to the beautiful country of Thailand, however, not since our daughter was born, so we are very much looking forward to introducing her to the wonderful people, food and places of Thailand and South East Asia. “It takes a village to raise a child” as the saying goes … and we here at HeadStart are in a partnership with you as parents in order to ensure your child achieves their true potential and to be the best that they can be – for there is a spark of greatness in everyone.

I was born and grew up in London, England. If any of you are familiar with the sport of Ruby Union, I grew up very close to Twickenham Stadium! I graduated in History from the University of Teeside in 1992, and in 1999 completed my P.G.C.E. and have now been an educationalist for over 17 years. As well as my teaching experience, I have a total of 12 years of experience as a curriculum manager and school leader, having served as an Assistant Head, a Deputy Head and Head Teacher. In my most recent role, in the Middle East , I worked as a School Improvement Consultant. I am a passionate believer in the transformational nature of education and learning. I believe that children learn best when they enjoy their learning and feel secure when facing tasks that are stimulating and challenging. Pupils should feel valued in the classroom and feel confident that enthusiasm and good learning will be met with recognition and praise from the teacher and peers. As a school leader I am committed to the challenge of motivating the whole school community to help every individual pupil realise his or her talents, whilst at the same time ensuring that our pupils are empowered with the essential skills to be able to make a positive contribution in an increasingly globalised world of rapid change and innovation. Hello, my name is Fiona Scott and I am very pleased to be joining HeadStart for another year. I am very much looking forward to a fun and exciting year ahead and working with a hard working school community who have high expectations and who are committed to the highest standards of teaching and learning. Since graduating from the University of Edinburgh in 2002, I have taught in a number of Primary schools across Scotland, England and Thailand. During my teaching career, I have taught all year groups in Key stage 1 and 2 as well as teaching across the Early Years. I have held a number of leadership roles, from subject coordinator to Head of Primary in a developing school in Bangkok. I believe that education encompasses developing the whole child; academically, socially and emotionally. Teaching should be fun and interesting as well as motivating and challenging; where all children can develop and thrive. As teachers, we need to ensure that all learning experiences are enriching and rewarding which promotes a lifelong love for learning. Through a creative curriculum approach; a happy and confident child, is a successful one. Since first moving to Thailand in 2006, my family and I are no strangers to the Thai culture and way of life. Both of my children were born in Thailand and are both very happy at HeadStart. They enjoy the range of learning experiences on offer and thrive in the After School Programmes on offer. As a family we all enjoy a range of activities from cycling to swimming to exploring and traveling around such a beautiful and diverse country. This year I will be based in Foundation and am looking forward to getting to know all the new families and supporting the children in their learning journey through HeadStart and beyond.

Richard Lukats

Mr Richard Lukats is the Athletics Director at Headstart International School. Richard has over twenty years’ experience of working in schools both internationally and in the United Kingdom. He has been a senior school administrator (Athletics Director, Principal/Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher/Principal and Assistant Headteacher) for the past 18 years internationally and in the UK. He is a UK qualified teacher (Post Graduate of Education, PGCE) and holds the UK qualification to be a Headteacher (National Professional Qualification for Headship, NPQH). At Headstart International School, Richard is responsible for leading the overall strategic direction, operational effectiveness and administration of the school’s sports and activities programme, alongside managing the PE Department. He is passionate, about the role sport and physical activity plays in the development of young people and he is looking to further developing the already excellent programme that is on offer at Headstart. He is always looking at ways of working with all members of the Headstart Community to further enhance the opportunities for participation in physical activities for everyone.
