Message from the Director
I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! I do hope that you will be able to enjoy a festive, relaxing and enjoyable holiday season spending quality time with your families, friends and loved ones.
I want to thank you parents for your ongoing support throughout this first term. The growth, development and successes we continue to experience would not be possible without your support and participation.
Our end of term results show that our students have continued to make excellent academic progress this term. The excellent progress and grades which our students achieved is a direct result of the work and efforts of our dedicated team of educators. There are constant demands put on our teachers during the course of the year and often times when they give everything they have in order to see students through difficult times. Their ability to recognize and respond to individual students’ needs and their willingness to meet the constant demands and expectations put on them as teachers while they give of their time, energy, attention, heart and soul to nurturing and teaching our students is what makes them great teachers.
We are seeing greater and better results year on year and the successes of the school are a direct reflection and result of our dedicated educators’ teamwork and tireless efforts to inspire a love of learning in our students. They are what make HeadStart the successful learning environment it is today. I am proud to be a part of this team of dedicated individuals who truly want to make a difference and I want to acknowledge and thank them for their efforts and dedication.
I hope that everyone will have a restful, fun and safe holiday break and I truly wish that some of the happiness, care, attention and love which you have given to others throughout the year will return to you many-fold during this holiday season

Increased Security for students:
In an effort to increase the security and safety of the students we will be installing an electronic gate entrance in time for Term 2. More details will be sent out by e-mail at a later date.
Christmas Play
We are very proud of each and every student and teacher who worked tirelessly for 3 months to produce such a fantastic show. We thank Jackie Feliciano for her efforts as the director of the play as well as Steve Ketley, Rachael Mayfield, Heidi St. Hill, Elise Foubert, Jody Leow, Zone Mauwing as well as the many students who despite the downpour of rain and trouble with sound made such a powerful production giving our drama department such a good start for the 2013-2014 academic school year!

As we approach the end of term holidays, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and peaceful end of year. I would like to thank all of our staff and the Parent’s Association for all their great work so far. Keep warm ;-) keep safe during the holidays and for those celebrating, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Let’s hope for a peaceful and exciting 2014.**

English Department—From Mr Richard Theze, Head of English
The English teachers have now proof-read and selected the four articles to be submitted to the 2013-14 YOUNG JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR AWARD competition.
We are excited to announce that the students representing HeadStart International school at Key Stage 3 are Azra Anderson (7a) and Luba Omelchenko (9a). The students representing us at Key Stage 4 are Zoey Ezendam and Haki Kim. Both students are in Year 11. We wish them all good luck and look forward to hearing the results of the competition in the New Year.
** Message from Mr Goodman—Head of Secondary**
Congratulations to students, parents, staff and teachers in successfully getting through the longest term of the academic year - the 16 weeks of term 1.
The academic team has demanded much higher standards this year and we are glad to see that the student body has risen to the occasion and are now producing excellent work. In terms 2 and 3, we will be raising standards even further, so there is still much hard work to be done.
In term 2, our senior year, Year 11, begin the term with 2 weeks of grueling IGCSE mock examinations - their last hurdle before the real examinations in May 2014. We wish them all the best of luck.
Everyone may now look forwards to a well deserved rest over the Christmas and New Year break to recharge their batteries and start the second term with renewed vigour.

Duke of Edinburgh Activity this weekend
For all Students concerned, this e-mail with information regarding the Duke of Edinburgh activity this weekend was sent out to all students and parents:
- We are happy to advise you that the IA training weekend for the Adventurous Journey element of the DofE International Bronze Award can still go ahead as planned on the 14th & 15th December 2013. Sorry for the delay in this letter but we were unsure whether this would take place due to the recent storm. - Participants were advised of this training weekend on the 14thNovember at the IA Thursday meeting with Topper Sail Phuket and we hope that all participants can still attend. - This first ‘training’ trip will incorporate camp-craft and cooking, route planning, navigation, teamwork and communication together with ‘sit on’ kayaking skills in preparation for the practice & final Adventurous Journey. - The first 2 day training will be based in Ao Yon with camping at Topper Sail Phuket Outdoor Centre by the beach and includes evening meal and breakfast. - Participants should bring a packed lunch for Saturday and Sunday, food can be stored in the fridge at the Centre. - Participants need to be at HeadStart International School for pick up on Saturday morning 14thDecember at 07:45am. A school bus will return participants back to HeadStart on Sunday 15thDecember between 4:00 and 4:30pm. - The cost for this training weekend including supplies and all equipment, evening meal and breakfast is 5,000 THB per student. - Participants will be supervised throughout the training weekend and camping activity by Topper sail staff and accompanied by HeadStart staff Katja Clark.
** Participants Kit List:**
- Sleeping bag or sheet - Washbag (toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo etc.) - Suncream & Hat - Mosquito repellent - Shoes for kayaking (wet boots or trainers) - Shorts & T-shirts for kayaking (rashvest or quick drying shirt) - Change of clothing - Jacket or warm top - Torch - Medication (if needed) - Packed Lunch (snacks)

Language Department News
Message from the Thai Department
Dear Thai parents,
Since the beginning of term 1, our Thai management and Thai teachers have pushed towards the teaching and learning programme for Thai Language and Culture such as the Saturday Thai Culture Club, Wai Kru, Loy Krathong and the King’s Birthday Ceremony. We have also created the programme for Thai parents called ‘Thai Parents Weekly Meeting’ where we met each other once a week and share valuable ideas about international education and policy in the school. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students and parents for supporting our goal to maintain the Thai identity in our school. I hope we will continue working together for the rest of the school year.

Mandarin Class
Secondary school students in Chinese class have been giving presentations in Chinese about what they’ve learned in Term 1, such as oneself, friends, family, celebrations and famous places, etc. Really good work Secondary! Well done!
French Class
Vy and Alicia (Y 9 students) visited Y1 students with some cookies, They taught them some Christmas vocabulary and a beautiful song they wrote on their own. Well done girls!!! Dieudonne and Elizabeth, (Y11 students) wrote a little Christmas tale for Y2 students helping them to review the face parts, a very good time for the little ones!!!
Year 8 and 9 cooks Thai Food!
This week our Thai advanced students in Year 8 cooked Laab Gai and Panaeng curry .
Art Department News
The Year 9 students visited the Trick Eye Museum in Phuket town as part of their art class. It was very interesting to see such a variety of paintings and ways in which the artists have portrayed their murals.

Introducing the Aqua Panthers!
As from now Stingrays is HeadStart Aqua Panthers in line with all the other school sports teams.
This term, at HeadStart Aqua Panthers we focused on:
Beginning Students:
- Developing streamlined swimming techniques in Freestyle and Backstroke, which have smooth and controlled movements along with the correct breathing techniques. - Introduced swimmers to Breaststroke.
Intermediate Students:
- Improving their level of swimming fitness and conditioning in all stokes. - Further developing their Freestyle and Backstroke technique. - Introducing the students to Breaststroke and Butterfly (working on the individual components and timing). - Introducing swimmers to Individual Medley swimming - Introducing swimmers to correct turning techniques (Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly) fitness levels.
We are starting to see some positive results from the efforts in the pool and particular congratulations this term to Innes Alexander, Anna Hull, Anya Belova, Eva Erdenko, who all managed to take as much as 20s off their 100m and 50m Freestyle and are now competently swimming all strokes.
There will be 3 swimming meets planned for second term, in March and April, plus the inter-house swimming gala planned for the second week back, and as a result, from January, we will be offering swimming 4 nights (Mon, Tue, Thur and Fri). This is to provide the best opportunity for individuals to train at least twice a week.

HeadStart 2015
ในขระนี้ทางโรงเรียนได้ดำเนินการขอใบอนุญาตก่อสร้าง คาดว่าจะแล้วเสร็จและสามารถดำเนินการต่อในส่วนอื่นๆได้ในช่วงประมาณ กลางเดือน ธันวาคม 2556 และหากท่านผู้ปกครองสนใจในการที่จะเข้าร่วมเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในคณะผู้ถือหุ้นทางโรงเรียนมีความยินดีอย่างยิ่ง โดยสามารถขอทราบรายละเอียดต่างๆผ่านทาง E-mail: [email protected]
การเพิ่มระดับรักษาความปลอดภัยแก่นักเรียน
ทางโรงเรียนได้เล็งเห็นความสำคัญถึงความปลอดภัยนักเรียนเป็นอันดับต้นๆ จึงได้มีการติดตั้งอุปกรณ์รักษาความปลอดภัยตรงบริเวณประตูทางเข้า จะสามารถติดตั้งให้แล้วเสร็จภายในภาคการเรียนที่2 ส่วนรายละเอียดต่างๆจะแจ้งให้ทราบอีกครั้ง
การแสดงงานวันคริสมาส
ทางโรงเรียนภาคภูมิใจเป็นอย่างยิ่งกับการจัดงานวันคริสมาส และต้องขอขอบคุณ คุณครูทุกท่าน โดยเฉพาะ Steve Ketley, Rachael Mayfield, Heidi St. Hill, Elise Foubert, Jody Leow, Zone Mauwingและนักเรียน สำหรับการทุ่มเท และเสียสละเวลา ที่ทำให้งานนี้เสร็จลุล่วงไปได้

‘Twas the NiteBefore the Mocks
‘Twas the night before the mocks exams,
And all through the school,
The students were praying
“What is the Sine Rule?”
Most were quite sleepy,
But none touched their beds,
While visions of essays
Danced in their heads.
Out on Bang-La,
A few were still drinking,
And hoping that some beer
Would get their brains thinking.
In villas and apartments,
Students were pacing,
Dreading all those exams
They soon would be facing.
Some drained all the coffee,
And brewed a new pot,
No longer caring
That their nerves were shot.
Y11 pretty much concluded
Life is unfair and cruel,
Since their futures all depend
On grades made in school.
When all of a sudden,
The door opened wide,
And the Ghost of “mai pen-rai”
Ambled inside.
Her spirit was careless,
Her manner was mellow,
She looked at the mess
And started to bellow:
“Why should us students
Make such a fuss,
About what those teachers
Throw out at us?”
Her message delivered,
She vanished from sight,
But she could be heard laughing
Outside in the night.
“Your teachers won’t flunk you,
So just do your best.
Happy Finals to All,
And to All, a good test.”

ตั้งแต่ภาคการศึกษา ที่ผ่านมา ทางผู้บริหาร และคณะคุณครูไทย ได้มีการจัดการเรียนการสอน และ สอดแทรกวัฒนธรรมไทยให้เด็กๆ และทางผู้บริหารได้มีการจัดประชุมผู้ปกครอง สัปดาห์ละ 1 ครั้ง เพื่อให้เกิดการแลกเปลี่ยนความคิดเห็น เพื่อนำไปปรับปรุงในภายภาคหน้า

นักเรียนชั้นมัธยมศึกษาได้มีการนำเสนอผลงานที่ได้เรียนมาทั้งหมดในภาคการศึกษาที่1 เกี่ยวกับการใช้ภาษาจีน ซึ่งผลงานที่ออกมาเป็นที่น่าพอใจเป็นอย่างยิ่ง
