Dear Parents,

We would like to invite you to the BTEC Launch & Upper Secondary Information morning on Thursday 23rd May 2019, form 8:15am - 9:15am in the Primary Hall.

This is an opportunity for parents of Year 9, 10 & 11 Students to find out more information about our new BTEC Qualifications that we will be running from August 2019 in Year 12 & 13. We will also be sharing with parents the great opportunities students have at HeadStart in Upper Secondary (Year 10 to Year 13) to pursue academic, creative and sporting excellence as well as the support that is available to students to prepare them for, and get them into, University.

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday morning.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls!

Welcome to The Greatest Show on Earth! Over 150 students from CAPA and the Dance Academy are preparing a fantastic circus themed evening with a magic mix of Hip Hop, Contemporary, Jazz dancers, cheerleaders, aerial artists and singers. Come to enjoy a variety of famous musical scenes from ‘Cats’ and the ‘Greatest Showman’. It’s going to be a bumpy ride to the other side!!! Tickets go on sale in the front office on the 15th of May at 8:00am.

FOOTBALL NEWS

The Under 9 Boys and Under 11 Boys/Girls and U13 Boys played in the PISAC Development League last Saturday at BISP and the Under 15 Girls and Over 15 Boys played at HeadStart. Here’s the match reports -

Under 9 Boys by Coach Chai

The Under 9 boys played very well, winning 5 of their 6 games. Special mention to Nathee Gorton who scored 6 goals!

Under 11 Boys & Girls by Mr Bushell

The under 11 boys and girls teams both played 3 games each at BIS. U11 Boys won all 3 of their games and the U11 girls won their first game! All players showed great enthusiasm and tried their best! Keep it up in the coming weeks!

Under 13 Boys by Coach Asa

The under 13 boys had the challenge of competing against opponents that are one year older than they are.

Technically and tactically the team worked well together, utilising their passing, dribbling and long range shooting skills to good effect.

The team responded well to an early set back in the opening fixture, supporting each other to ensure a positive end to the morning.

The group have to work hard on their physical levels in training to compete against some of the teams in the competition.

Jaime emerged as a good leader within the group and Lukas demonstrated his ability to have a significant impact on the game in any position.

The team need to ensure they continue applying their excellent short passing ability if they concede a goal, resisting the temptation to revert to ‘long ball’ tactics.

Coach Asa is looking forward to see how quicklu the team respond in their fixtures this weekend and next week.

Under 15 girls by Miss Brelstaff

What a difference a week makes!

After last week’s defeat against KIS the girls were determined for a different outcome at the PISAC development league. The girls demonstrated outstanding teamwork and fought hard against tough opposition. In the first game HeadStart went down 1-0 against KIS but managed to kept their composure and worked hard to earn a well deserved 2-1 victory. The girls then went on to draw against UWC first team 0-0 and beat UWC’s second team 1-0. A fantastic performance by the under 15 girls team, Miss Brelstaff was very proud.

The O15 boys won both their games today.

Game 1 v Kajonket was a 3-0 win (Vasco / Alex / Natasha)

Game 2 v UWCT was a 4-0 win (Vasco / Alex / Mathéo / Vincent )

WHAT’S COMING UP?

FOOTBALL

HeadStart will be hosting the King George V School Hong Kong on Saturday, 18th for an Under 13’s Football tournament. Kickoff is at 09.00am and all are welcome to come and watch.

Coach Asa is hoping to confirm away fixtures for the U13s on Wednesday and U9s on Friday next week.

The PISAC Development League End of Year Tournament is coming up. Here’s some information -

Under 9 Boys, Under 11 Boys/Girls and U13 Boys/Girls will play at BISP on Wednesday, 29th May from 13.30-15.30.

Under 15 Girls will play at HeadStart on Wednesday, 29th May from 15.30-17.30.

Over 15 Boys will play at HeadStart on Thursday, 30th May from 16.30-17.30.

SWIMMING

We have the Primary PISAC Swim Meet on May, 20th at Kajoinkiet International School! I am very excited to have such an amazing group of swimmers who are ready to compete for HeadStart! Below you will find information about the meet and the events -

Event: Primary PISAC Swimming Gala

Date: Monday, May 20th

Depart school: 12:15

Start time: 13:00

Expected Finish: 14:30

A bus will bring the swimmers back to school at the completion of the meet. However, If you wish to bring your swimmer home yourself, you can.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to last week’s Stars of the Week in Foundation. Certificates were awarded to Ji ah, Ella, Jacob and Kimi for working hard all week and making super progress. In Early Years a big well done to Punn and Shihan for working hard all week!

Early Years have been learning about ‘People Who Help Us’, and what better way to learn than through hands-on experience? We went to see the firefighters. We watched a demonstration where the firefighters showed us what they prepare when going into a fire (e.g. their helmet, their clothes that protect them from burns and an axe in case the doors don’t open!) and let us try some of the gear on. They also let us have a look into the firetruck and gave us a chance to try the water hose. Some of us got a little wet from the splash! What an engaging and wonderful time we had. Catch Me Reading Competition

Congratulations to Jude and Lucy in Reception and Michaela and Zen in Early Years for winning first and second prizes in our recent Catch Me Reading competition in Foundation. These children were photographed doing some extreme reading and have won book vouchers to spend at Asia Books to continue to inspire a love of reading.

Reception Pirates

Reception are thoroughly enjoying our new topic all about ‘Pirates’! They have been getting into character as brave and adventurous pirates sailing the ocean on our class Pirate ship. They designed and wrote about their own pirate characters and also described what they would do if they were a pirate. In Maths the children have been doing super addition and subtraction work in pirate themed problem solving activities. Ahoy there pirates we’ve had a whale of a time!

Sensory Room

A huge thank you to the Creative Arts department and the members of staff who created the magical ‘Sensory Room’ for CAPA week. The Reception children loved exploring the sights, sounds and creative scenes in this curious and sensory environment!

China Day

Year 1 visited China yesterday and had so much fun. We learnt a lot about Chinese culture and some children said it was their best day ever! We tried on beautiful clothes, learnt interesting facts, created our own flags and even completed games and quizzes - with pandas for prizes!

We were also so lucky to have lots of lovely Chinese food to try; traditional Chinese breakfast, lunches, dinners and snacks! Not only that, we had some super helpful parents who explained everything about the food, so we were learning lots as we ate. Another wonderful Tuesday spent travelling and exploring!

Year 1 Yellow have done some truly amazing Maths this week. They’ve mastered their learning on 3D shape, with fun and practical activities as well as lots of problem solving and reasoning. I am so impressed!

This week Year 6 have been recreating a scene from Shakespeare’s famous play - Macbeth. They worked on using their voices, props, actions and gestures to create an intense and scary three witches scene. By Ms Sophie Webb

Art

Year 4 and 5 students in ASP art have learnt how to Thai Dye. They created some unusual and colourful fabric designs using the technique.

In the spirit of CAPA week, the Year 10 Drama class have explored their skills in physical theatre, Epic and Greek theatre through a performance workshop by UK company Splendid Productions. Together with other Phuket international school drama students, they developed characters and worked on ensemble skills. They also were lucky enough to view the performance of ‘The Oresteia’ - the story of King Agamemnon, his queen Clytemnestra, and their children, Iphigenia, Electra and Orestes. A legendary family born to power, but destined to rip itself apart in a bloody cycle of tragedy. By Ms Hayley Milner

Two different English classes came together this week as Mr. Paice’s class sat in judgment of two groups from Mr. Pollicutt’s,

Mr. Pollicutt’s students were debating how audiences perceive the character of John Tate in Dennis Kelly’s powerful and gritty play DNA.

Students spoke with some conviction on both sides of the floor, with particular rhetorical flair being displayed by Shane Walters and Nutcha Phaisamran.

Good talk leads to good writing and Year 10 continue on their path to becoming accomplished and sophisticated writers across a range of purposes and forms in the lead up to their IGCSE in 2020.

Around the Island

On the 26th of May there is a community fundraising event taking place at the Bang Wad Dam (15 minutes from school) that we would like to promote as a school. The details of the event are in the poster below. We hope that HeadStart will have a significant representation at the event with as many staff, students and parents as possible taking part. Further details will follow but in the meantime please keep the date free and plan to attend if you can. The distance round the reservoir is just less than 7km and there are a number of options as to how to get round, so participation will not require much effort. It isn’t a race, it is just about raising money for ride4kids.
