Important Announcements

Now That They Have the Building – Let’s Make Sure That They Can Go! by Julie Cousineau, Y2B Teacher

We are organising a fundraiser for the Good Shepherd School for Disadvantaged Children and their families. More than 150 Burmese children attend the Good Shepherd School. To keep the school running they need 1,000 THB per child per month.

From May 6 – May 30, 2014, we will be collecting: Clothing: Used clothes or shoes for adults and/or children Toiletries: Toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, etc. Stationery: Pencils, erasers, colouring crayons, notebooks, paper, etc. * Toys*: Used toys, jigsaw puzzles, books, etc.

The more you donate, the more merits you earn for your House!

1st place: 1,000 merits, 2nd place: 750 merits, 3rd place: 500 merits, 4th place: 250 merits

Donations should be put in the appropriate bags (depending on which house you belong to), which will be in front of the Merit Towers. Cash donations can be put in a box that will be next to the office.

Library Closures During IGCSE Exams *by Nola Russell, Librarian *From May 6 – June 11, 2014, IGCSE Exams will be taking place in the library. During exams, nobody is allowed to enter the library. If an exam is being held there will be large cones in the hallways, stating that exams are in progress, and a sign on the library door. The door nearest to Els Bellon’s office will be locked for the entire month. The library schedule can be found posted the window outside of the library on the side with the back stairs or you can download it below.

In the first week of the new term, I needed to speak to a number of female students who had returned to school after the term break with coloured hair. HeadStart school has a clear policy regarding uniform and personal appearance, which means that those students were in breach of the rules. One or two parents have expressed their belief that students need to be allowed to express their individuality in school and so I would like to pass on my thoughts on this important topic.

Firstly, I am concerned that there is far too much pressure on our young people, especially on young women, to look a certain way. However, both girls and boys can focus on appearance as evidence of worthiness - with consequent lowered self-esteem and an increased risk of psychiatric problems, including eating disorders. Young peoples’ rising preoccupation with their appearance has created and reinforced a multi-million dollar consumer culture catering to these insecurities. Moreover, the nature of fame has greatly changed the way young people see themselves. The modern culture of celebrity encourages them to look up to their idols because of their looks and the way that they behave, making them want to act and dress like them. The culture of celebrity shows girls and boys that it is acceptable to wear clothing, hairstyles and accessories that often show disrespect for themselves and their bodies. This, in turn, may help to explain why many adolescents are dating and becoming sexually active at younger ages than before, thus heightening their concerns about their appearance.

The way I see it is that expressing yourself creatively and distinctly should be done with good, healthy intentions, admirable ethics and morals, and with a focus on honouring your authentic self as well as the school rules. Be true to yourself. Know exactly who you are. Discover what you like and do not like and what you are good at. This is what makes you unique, not what you wear. Show others what you love and what you are good at; this will make you shine and will help you to stand out from the crowd.

Early Years A *by Anisa Van Der Laan, EYA Teacher *Here are some photos of Early Years A taken at this week’s swimming lesson.

Community Helpers *by Anisa Van Der Laan, EYA Teacher *Early Years is learning about Community Helpers and various occupations that people have. This week they learned about the Doctor, the Dentist, the Nurse and the Veterinarian. They played games, read books and stories about it, and talked about their own experiences at the doctor. They also tried out some role play as doctors and patients, emergency workers and ambulance workers. It was a great learning experience!

Thai Titles *by Kru Wi, Thai First Language Teacher *This week Year 8 Thai as a First Language Programme learned about ‘Thai Titles’. The students were given a group assignment and searched for the samples in the newspaper.

Art Department News

Primary Art *by Jody Leow, Art Teacher *Year 3 made shields and helmets in art class, as part of their unit on the Romans.

Year 2 have been looking at reflections and symmetry in art class and they painted imaginative cityscapes reflected in water.

อุปกรณ์เครื่องใช้ เช่น แปรงสีฟัน ยาสีฟัน สบู่ แชมพู และอื่น อุปกรณ์เครื่องเขียน เช่น ดินสอ, ยางลบ, สีเทียน, สมุด, กระดาษ และอื่นๆ ของเล่นที่ใช้แล้ว เช่น จิ๊กซอ หรือว่า หนังสือ เป็นต้น

และที่ยิ่งไปกว่าการบริจาคแล้วได้บุญก็คือ คุณจะได้รับรางวัลลูกแก้ว เพื่อเพิ่มคะแนนให้กับบ้านของคุณด้วย

ใครที่ได้รับรางวัลการบริจาคมากที่สุดจะได้รับคะแนนดังนี้

ที่ 1 ได้รางวัลคุณความดี รับไปค่ะ 1,000 คะแนน

ที่ 2ได้รางวัลคุณความดี รับไปค่ะ 750 คะแนน

ที่ 3ได้รางวัลคุณความดี รับไปค่ะ 500 คะแนน

ห้องสมุดจะปิดในช่วงการสอบIGCSE

เนื่องจากว่าทางโรงเรียนจะใช้ห้องสมุดสำหรับจัดการสอบIGCSE ในระหว่างวันที่ 6- 11 พฤษภาคม 2014 และขอแจ้งเพื่อทราบว่าในระหว่างการสอบทางโรงเรียนไม่อนุญาตให้มีใครเข้าออกห้องสมุด โดยเราจะจัดวางกรวยตรงทางเดินในช่วงที่มีการสอบพร้อมทั้งสัญลักษณ์ที่หน้าห้องสมุด นอกจากนี้ทางเราจะทำการล็อคประตูห้องสมุดทางด้านที่อยู่ติดกับห้องของคุณครู Els เกือบตลอดทั้งเดือน ส่วนตารางการสอบ IGCSE เรามีติดแสดงที่ห้องสมุด หรือไม่ท่านสามารถดาวน์โลดได้จาก ลิ้งค์ ด้านล่างนี้

เรียนรู้เรื่องการขอความช่วยเหลือ

เด็กนักเรียนชั้น Early Years ได้เรียนรู้การขอความช่วยเหลือและเรียนรู้อาชีพต่างๆ โดยนักเรียนได้เรียนโดยเล่นเป็นหมอ พยาบาล หมอฟัน สับเปลี่ยนกันเป็นหมอ เป็นคนไข้ และทำงานในช่วงที่เกิดเหตุการณ์ฉุกเฉิน นอกจากนี้ยังได้เล่นเกมส์ อ่านหนังสือร่วมกันด้วยทั้งยังได้พูดคุยแลกเปลี่ยนประสบการการพบแพทย์ มันยอดมากค่ะ

เด็กๆ เรียนรู้เรื่องรูปทรงต่างพร้อมทั้งระบายสีกับเด็กเล็ก ข่าวจากฝ่ายภาษาและวัฒนธรรมไทย

*เรียนรู้เรื่องการอ่านภาษาไทย *ในสัปดาห์นี้นักเรียน Y8 ที่เลือกภาษาไทยเป็นวิชาหลักได้เรียนรู้การอ่านในชั่วโมงภาษาไทย โดยการอ่านบทความในหนังสือพิมพ์

ครูให้นักเรียนศึกษา เรื่องคำนำหน้านาม ตามฐานะบุคคล ยศ อาชีพหรือตำแหน่ง จากหนังสือพิมพ์รายวัน โดยครูให้นักเรียนศึกษาเป็นกลุ่ม โดยภาพรวมนักเรียนมีความสนใจในการทำงานและได้ฝึกอ่านข่าวหนังสือพิมพ์ ซึ่งมีประโยชน์อย่างมาก
