Employee of the Month

April’s ‘Employee of the Month’ is Mr. Boonjob Khraiviraj, one of the security guards here at HeadStart. Normally employees get a 1,000 baht prize. However, Boonjob will turn 60 years old on May 12th, so the school management has agreed to give him an additional 2,000 baht. Thank you for doing such a good job and Happy Birthday Boonjob!

Boonjob was a fisherman for 30 years before he started working at HeadStart. It was hard physical work and he often got sick on the boat. When he felt poorly it was difficult to see a doctor because the work was far from shore. Since he has started working at HeadStart, 2 1/2 years ago, his life is much easier.

Yearbook Advertising Possibility

HeadStart International School is compiling its annual school Year Book for the 2013-2014 academic school year. This document will be a reflection of our school members and feature pictures of the many events and activities that our school has participated in throughout the school year. A total of 500 copies will be published and distributed to students, parents, teachers and the school community. The Year Book will be published at the end of this academic year and be available for purchase on the Music and Arts Celebration Day.

Our school is proud to be offering local businesses a chance to advertise in our Year Book. This will be a great chance for your business to reach our entire school community.

The Year Book will be printed in a high quality multi-coloured glossy paper.

According to a recent newspaper article, juvenile crime is the most serious problem facing Phuket. Shockingly, not only are some offenders as young as 14, but they are involved in some of the most serious crimes. Last year, 22 youths were charged with murder, and four were arrested for rape. The most common arrests are for drugs and theft.

Interestingly, about 40 per cent of those arrested are from middle class or wealthy urban backgrounds, while 60 per cent are from less well-off, more rural settings. However, there is no single reason why juveniles get involved with crime: it’s a complicated interplay between a number of significant factors. Nevertheless, given that parenting is probably the single largest variable implicated in substance misuse and juvenile crime everywhere, it seems a good place to begin in what has become a fight to clean up delinquent influences in modern society.

Although a reasonable consensus exists about ‘bad parenting’, there is no firm agreement about what constitutes its opposite. We may, however, view parenting as having three essential components: Firstly, care protects children from harm and encompasses the promotion of emotional as well as physical health. This includes such things as ensuring that your teenager wears a safety helmet if they ride a motorcycle or travel as a pillion passenger. It includes not leaving them alone and unsupervised for extended periods of time. Teenagers need to be overseen. They are accomplished at covering up the things they know you would not approve of. They will, for example, watch pornography, violent clips and a whole host of other inappropriate images on You Tube and other sites on the internet. And they will experiment with alcohol and other substances. It is your responsibility to control what they have access to. Not doing this leaves them exposed to a myriad of impropriety and danger.

Secondly, control involves setting and enforcing boundaries to ensure your children’s safety. It is simply not enough to tell them how you want them to behave; it is about how you react when a child does not do what you ask of them. Some parents do not always promote accountability, and that is where the flaw lies. You absolutely have to hold young people accountable for not meeting their responsibilities. Being held accountable requires that you make the consequence for not meeting the responsibility less pleasant than if the child had completed the task in the first place. It is that act of being held accountable that promotes a willingness to meet the responsibilities next time.

Thirdly, development involves optimising children’s potential and maximising the opportunities for using it. This is particularly relevant with regard to schooling because recent studies show that parental involvement in a child’s education vastly improves academic achievement and that parents who fail to impose proper discipline in the home are to blame for a rising tide of disruptive behaviour in schools. Unfortunately, the downward spiral in lack of morals and proper upbringing in some homes means that children are not only underachieving at school, but many are committing crimes at much younger ages than in the past. In many places around the world, Thailand included, officials feel that a lack of social values and parents not paying attention to their children are the main reasons for an increase in violent and anti-social behaviour amongst our youth.

No parent is perfect and we are all likely to make some mistakes as we bring up our children. This is just a normal part of parenting and isn’t likely to have a long-lasting detrimental effect, as long as we work hard not to repeat the mistakes. Consistently poor parenting, on the other hand, can have negative consequences during childhood and far beyond.

As you may already know, last year our Thai team did an excellent job in training and entering our Thai students into the Phuket Annual Academic Competition. BISP Flying Fish Invitational Swim meet, 3rd and 4th of May 2014 by Steve Ketley, AquaPanthers Coach

On Saturday and Sunday the AquaPanthers Swim Team competed at 6th British International School Flying Fish Invitational Swim meet which was attended by over 400 competitors from schools in Bangkok, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos, Vietnam and China. This was a great meet and another step up in standard for the AquaPanthers with many events requiring qualifying times. Most age groups had 40 competitors and some had many as 60.

Outstanding Performances: To finish in the top 10 of an individual event at a meet of this standard is an outstanding achievement given the number of competitors and the standard of competition. Silvana Dufes and Jiraya Prieur had outstanding swims to record not only personal bests but also top 10 finishes.

• Silvana Dufes : 6th 100m Breaststroke (9 – 10 girls) & 6th 50m Breaststroke (9 – 10 girls) - Jiraya Prieur: 6th 50m Backstroke (13 – 14 girls), 7th 100m Backstroke (13 – 14 girls) & 9th 50m Freestyle (13 – 14 girls)

Calvin Van der Laan – set personal bests in all 6 of his individual events and anchored the relay team to a great 6th place finish running down two swimmers who entered the pool with significant starts.

Our relay teams all finished in the top 10:

• 4th Girls 9 – 10, 200m Medley Relay (Lucy Mester, Silvana Dufes, Anna Hull and Kiki Ngernanek) - 4th Girls 11 – 12, 200m Freestyle Relay (Sandi Davies, Lucy Mester, Jiraya Prieur, Emmie Parsons) - 5th Girls 9 – 10, 200m Freestyle Relay (Lucy Mester, Silvana Dufes, Kiki Ngernanek and Anna Belova) - 6th Boys 9 – 10, 200m Freestyle Relay (Calvin Van der Laan, Max Stowe, Armin Schmid and Noel Perjesi)

Outstanding PB’s: The increase in the level of competition had a positive effect on all of our swimmers and they rose to the challenge by recording personal bests some of which were over 10 seconds better than their previous PB’s.

The most significant of these PB improvements were:

• Kiki Ngernanek: 16 sec (100m Freestyle) - Kate Songpetchmongkol: 14 sec (50m Breaststroke) - Jiraya Prieur: 12 sec (100m Backstroke) - Armin Schmid: 12sec (50 Butterfly) - Anna Hull: 11 sec (100m Breaststroke) - Anya Belova: 10sec (100m Freestyle)

Team Captain: ** After her exceptional efforts on the weekend coupled with enormous work ethic at training, it was an easy choice to make **Jiraya Prieur our first AquaPanthers Swim Team Captain. Congratulations Jiraya!.

Thanks to all the parents who attended and consistently provide support for their kids as it contributes greatly to the atmosphere and the kids and I really appreciate it.

พนักงานดีเด่นประจำเดือนเมษายน 2557 นี้ได้แก่ นาย บุญจบ พนักงานรักษาความปลอดภัยของโรงเรียน โดยปกติแล้วทางโรงเรียนมีรางวัลสำหรับพนักงานดีเด่น 1,000 บาท สำหรับพนักงานดีเด่นในเดือนนั้นๆ แต่ว่าเดือนนี้เป็นอะไรที่พิเศษ คือ พนักงานดีเด่นของเราท่านนี้ได้มีวันคล้ายวันเกิดครบรอบ 60 ปี ในวันที่ 12 พ.ค. 57 ดังนั้นทางฝ่ายบริหารจึงได้ให้รางวัลพิเศษสำหรับ คุณบุญจบ เพิ่มอีก 2,000 บาท เพื่อเป็นขวัญและกำลังใจแก่พนักงานเพื่อที่จะได้รักษาความดีและมีกำลังใจในการทำงานต่อไป และสุดท้ายนี้ของให้คุณบุญจบ มีความสุขในวันคล้ายวันเกิดในปีนี้

คุณบุญจบ เคยทำงานเป็นชาวประมงมากว่า 30 ปี ก่อนที่จะมาทำงานที่เฮดสตาร์ท คุณบุญจบเล่าว่า การทำงานของเขานั้นเป็นงานที่หนักมากและบางครั้งถึงกับขนาดเจ็บไข้ได้ป่วยในช่วงที่ออกเรือและไม่สามารถที่จะไปหาหมอได้ เพราะเมื่อออกเรือไปไกลแล้วต้องใช้เวลาอีกนานหลายวันกว่าที่จะเข้าฝั่งด้วยเหตุนี้คุณบุญจบจึงได้เลิกอาชีพการเป็นชาวประมง และได้เข้ามาร่วมงานกับเราเมื่อ 2 ปีที่แล้วและคุณบุญจบมีความสุขมากขึ้นกับการทำงานที่เฮดสตาร์ท

การจัดทำหนังสือโรงเรียน

หมวกนักรบยุคโรมัน ของเด็กYear 4

นี่เป็นส่วนหนึ่งในการเรียนรู้เรื่องประวัติศาสตร์ ในหัวข้อเรื่อง ของชาวโรมัน โดยนักเรียนในชั้นได้เรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับการรบของชาวโรมันรวมทั้งได้ทำหมวกและแต่งตัวเหมือนชาวโรมันสมัยก่อน

ทางโรงเรียนได้ผลการคัดเลือกนักเรียนที่จะไปทำการแข่งขันทักษะทางภาษาไทยแล้ว

ตามที่หลายๆท่านทราบ เมื่อปีการศึกษาที่แล้ว โรงเรียนของเราได้ส่งนักเรียนไทยเข้าร่วมแข่งขันทักษะวิชาการจังหวัดภูเก็ตเป็นครั้งแรก และนักเรียนของเราหลายคนได้รับเหรียญรางวัลจากการแข่งขัน นับเป็นการสร้างชื่อเสียงแก่ตนเอง แก่ครอบครัวและแก่โรงเรียน ในปีการศึกษานี้ื ทางโรงเรียนยินดีที่จะแจ้งให้ท่านทราบว่า เราจะมีการคัดเลือกนักเรียนเพื่อส่งนักเรียนแข่งขันอีกเช่นเคย โดยในภาคเรียนที่ 3 ช่วงต้นเดือนพฤษภาคมนี้ ทางคณะครูไทยจะมีการคัดเลือกนักเรียนไทยที่มีความสามารถทางภาษาไทยด้านต่างๆ เพื่อคัดเลือกเป็นตัวแทนโรงเรียนเข้าแข่งขัน โดยทางโรงเรียนจะสามารถประกาศรายชื่อนักเรียนที่จะเป็นตัวแทนโรงเรียนและแจ้งกำหนดการเพื่อเริ่มฝึกซ้อม

ในวันเสาร์และวันอาทิตย์ที่ผ่านมา ทางโรงเรียนได้นำนักเรียนเข้าร่วมการแข่งขันว่ายน้ำครั้งที่ 6 ที่ British International School ในรายการ Flying Fish Invitational Swim meet โดยมีผู้ที่เข้าร่วมการแข่งขันที่มาจากกรุงเทพ สิงคโปร มาเลเซีย ลาว เวียดนาม และประเทศจีน ด้วย ในการแข่งขันครั้งนี้มีผู้ที่เข้าร่วมการแข่งขันมากกว่า 400 คน นี่ถือได้ว่าเป็นโอกาสที่ดีอย่างยิ่งที่ทีมว่ายน้ำของเราได้เข้าร่วมการแข่งขัน นอกจากนี้แล้วทีมว่ายน้ำของเรายังมีอีกหลายรายการที่จะเข้าร่วมการแข่งขันซึ่งตอนนี้เราได้นักว่ายน้ำที่จะเข้าร่วมการแข่งขันได้รับการคัดเลือกนักว่ายน้ำโดยดูผู้ที่ทำเวลาได้ดี ที่อยู่ที่ 40 และ 60

ผลการแข่งขัน ผลการแข่นขันSilvanaDufes and JirayaPrieurสามารถทำเวลาได้เป็นอย่างดีและยังติดอันดับ หนึ่งใน 10 ด้วย

โครงการการจัดอบรมการถ่ายภาพ ฟรี

สำหรับนักเรียนที่มีความสนใจในการที่จะเข้าร่วมการอบรมในโครงการการจัดอบรมการถ่ายภาพ ซึงเราจะรับนักเรียนจำนวน 40 คนเท่านั้น เพื่อเข้าร่วมการอบรม ท่านผู้ที่สนใจให้รีบลงรายชื่อ การอบรมจัดขึ้นตั้งแต่ 9 โมง – 4 โมงเย็น โดยเราได้แบ่งกลุ่มผู้ที่จะเข้าอบรมดังนี้

• วันเสาร์ ที่ 10 พฤษภาคม 2557 สำหรับนักเรียน year 6 to year 8

• วันเสาร์ ที่ 17 พฤษภาคม 2557 สำหรับนักเรียน year 9 to year 11
