Nicholas Carter

Director of Sport
[email protected]

My name is Nick Carter and I am from Kent, in the UK. I came to Thailand in 2015, after 6 years of living and teaching P.E. in Stockholm, Sweden (where it snows for six months of the year!). So, it is fair to say that, I was ready for a completely different climate change, as well as cultural change. My sporting background is very diverse. I grew up with a passion for playing football, but later, in my teens, I discovered baseball. I made my debut for the Great Britain national baseball squad at the age of 18 and played with the squad for the next 14 years. I also trained as a professional contemporary dancer and toured nationally and internationally for 7 years in numerous dance companies. Although I have many other sporting interests, I want to make it clear that P.E. teachers are not just whistle blowing, basketball bouncing individuals, as I released my first fictional novel (in June, 2015). However, participating in sport, physical activity, and leading a healthy lifestyle are very important to me, and I’ve enjoyed imparting my knowledge in teaching and coaching environments for over 20 years. I am delighted to be HeadStart’s Director of Sport and my fundamental aims are for our students to continue to experience a really diverse range of physical activities, all the while having loads of fun through being active. For example, HeadStart pupils will participate in the following sports activities in either curriculum time or in our fantastic After School Sports programme -Basketball, Netball, Football, Rugby, Athletics, Swimming, Badminton, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Softball, Rounders, Yoga, Dance, and Gymnastic activities (amongst others). If you have any questions, you can email me at – [email protected]

At HeadStart our concept of a complete and balanced Physical Education and Sports programme means providing all children with a wide range of athletics, games and activities in a fun and safe environment, delivered and taught by world-class professionals, coaches and experts in their fields. This allows students to develop their interest and skills in physical activity and sport and to further focus their talents and abilities towards specialist skills as they advance year by year through the school.

HeadStart delivers a three phase approach to Sport and Fitness Development.

Physical Education (PE) Curriculum

In order to inspire a love of sport and physical activity, and to ensure our children are motivated to actively keep themselves healthy, the first thing that has to be right is the PE Curriculum that the school provides. With that in mind we have introducing a very broad and balanced PE and games curriculum in line with the English National curriculum from Pre-School right through to our Sixth Form form students.

PE lessons begin in Foundation with the essential acquirement of important life and survival skills such as Swimming and the physical literacy of fine motor skills that develop at these early stages. As your child moves through Key Stages 1 and 2 a broad range of sports and athletics taught by specialist teachers is delivered along with regular whole school events, house competitions and sporting tournaments and events between other schools on the island of Phuket and beyond.

Our dedicated team of ten PE and Sports Coaching staff who deliver the PE curriculum, along with our excellent facilities, mean we are able to provide an outstanding Physical Education program for all of our students across all year groups. Throughout an academic year our students will now experience a wide range of 12 activities including:

  • Swimming
  • Football
  • Dance and Movement
  • Gymnastics
  • Athletics
  • Primary and Foundation games development
  • Fitness
  • Aerobics
  • Pilates
  • Yoga
  • Volleyball
  • Badminton
  • Hockey
  • Basketball

‘Children made good progress with their physical development through specialist P.E. lessons and play. They confidently and safely show good control and coordination. Adults provide planned group activities that are often adult led.’ Education Development Trust (EDT) Accreditation Report, June 2017
