Foundation

Our Academic Staff members are at the very heart of our School. It is their enthusiasm and commitment in providing learning to our students that inspires our high standards and continued success.

HeadStart’s over 90 specialist teachers have British, Australian, US or similar internationally recognised qualifications which include Bachelor and Master Degrees and Doctorates. They bring with them a wealth of current experience from their home countries and from other international schools. Teachers in Foundation and Primary School are supported by a team of qualified teaching assistants.

The dedication and commitment of our Operational Staff in supporting the day-to-day running of HeadStart ensures that our students receive the very best in learning and extra-curricular activities.

‘Throughout the school, teachers’ subject knowledge and understanding of how students learn are strong. Relationships between students and teachers are positive. The ratio of qualified teachers to students, especially in the early years and lower primary classes, is high. ‘Deputy’ teachers, who are fully qualified teachers in their home countries, support class teachers. Due to their expertise, they make a significant difference to the rates of progress that students make. Teachers know students well and assess them accurately. This enables teachers to plan work that matches the ability of individual students and caters well for their varying needs.’ Education Development Trust (EDT) Accreditation Report, June 2017

Alma Oliva

Deputy Teacher
[email protected]

My name is Alma G. Oliva, born in Masbate Philippines. I am married and blessed with four children. I gained the degree of Bachelor of Arts Major in English at Mountain View, Valencia, Bukidnon, Philippines. My first job was working with the little ones and this inspired me to specialise and teach young children. Singing and playing musical instruments are my favourite hobbies. I believe in a saying that says “In this world nothing is constant, everything keeps on changing” especially in the field of teaching. As a teacher, we should not stop learning; we should make ourselves well-equipped with knowledge, for we will be passing that knowledge on to our students. I served as a Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary teacher in Private schools in the Philippines for 9 years. I first came to Thailand in April 2007. Initially I worked in Bangkok as a Primary and Secondary Music teacher at Sunflower Trilingual School. Then I moved to Phuket and got a job at HeadStart International School as Deputy Teacher in Preschool, Reception and Year 2. I’ve been working in this school for eight years. At present, I am working as Deputy Teacher in Early Years Blue with Miss Holly. I wish that the school will have more success this year and in the years to come with harmonious relationships between teachers and parents, as we work together to help our students to achieve their dreams.

Holly Strawbridge

Teacher
[email protected]

My name is Holly Strawbridge and I am looking forward to teaching Early Years at Headstart for the second year. I am from the United Kingdom and grew up in Doncaster. I always knew I wanted to travel and live abroad and Thailand is a wonderful place to do just that. I regularly like to take trips to visit other islands around Thailand. HeadStart’s philosophy is what made me apply for this role, as I believe that inspiring and developing a love for learning in the Early Years provides a strong foundation for every child. In my experience, children learn best in exciting, motivating and imaginative lessons that capture their interest and ensure their engagement. For me, this means working in an environment that not only celebrates children’s academic success, but also nurtures their creativity. When children learn through hands on experiences and play, they are able to develop their confidence, life skills and explore for themselves. By having fun and exploring ideas for themselves, children are able to make sense of their world and thrive. I also believe that a strong partnership between home and school is essential for the wellbeing of the children. Therefore, I look forward to working alongside you to nurture each individual and allow them to achieve their full potential.

Sukonta Petkaew

Thai Teacher
[email protected]

Hello everyone, my name is Sue and I hold the position of a primary Thai teacher here at HeadStart International School. It completely three years at the new campus and it went absolutely well. It was another fabulous year of teaching and learning for teachers and students at HeadStart. It is clear that our continuing success comes from good leadership, highly qualified teachers, a strong curriculum, and outstanding effort from the students. I completed my forth year working here and I am happy to continue working with great colleagues and students. Over the past sixteen years I have taught students from Early Years to Year 10 and I have worked in a variety of schools. Previous to this post I taught at British International School Phuket (BISP) as a Secondary Thai teacher for just under 8 years. Firstly I worked as a Teaching assistant, then I was promoted to the position of Second language Thai teacher in the Secondary school until I left the school in 2013. I left because I felt the need to find new challenges and opportunities. The skills I learned were invaluable but it was time to use them in a different capacity to further enhance the learning of my students elsewhere. This is why I came to HeadStart and I was holding the position of Head of Thai Faculty at the first two years. I am always very professional, honest, and sincere in my approach, both with students and parents. I strive to keep up with current teaching practices and have worked hard to continually upgrade my teaching skills by attending additional training courses and workshops. My passion for teaching comes from a love of learning. My aim is to get students interested and excited in what they are learning about and even to get them to decide what they want to study more. I have undertaken some key roles in providing opportunities for our new staff in a number of areas. I have an additional role as an instructor for the Thai Language and Culture course for new non-Thai teachers as well as a mentor for the many traditional Thai events held at the school. I welcome all parents to contact me about their child/children’s progress and I hope I am successful in making every effort to make them feel comfortable in doing so. It is important for teachers and parents to work together to create a positive learning environment for the students. Please contact me at: [email protected]

My name is Natthapicha Damthip. My nickname is Poy. I graduated from Phuket Rajabhat University in Environmental Science program and achieved a diploma for being a teacher. I have taught science in Primary and in Secondary for 9 years at Dowroong Wittaya School. I also taught the students who are weak at reading in Thai. Although I was a full time teacher, I also tutored students out of school. I taught Science, Maths and Thai from kindergarten to Secondary level. I decided to resign from Dowroong Wittaya School to be freelance teacher. I had the chance to teach Thai to special needs children. I find it very challenging to help those students who struggle in academic but it made me very proud. I am very happy when I see the development of the children. I believe that every child is a genius and they will open their mind if they study happily. Lastly, I want to say thank you HeadStart International School for giving me the opportunity to work here. Pornsuda Rattanasen

Thai Teacher
[email protected]

Hello, my name is Pornsuda Rattanasen (Gen). I was born in Nongkai, Northeast of Thailand. After I finished high school I went to Buriram Rajabhat University and graduated with my Bachelor’s in English in 2009. My first teacher experience was in Darasamuth School, English programme in Phuket. I worked there for three years with Primary 2 as a class teacher, English and Thai teacher as well. I then worked at British International School Phuket as a Teacher Assistant with Year 2 for two and a half years. I also teach Thai to Russian students for private classes outside of school in my free time as I speak a little bit of Russian. It has been quite a challenge working in these different school systems. I have enjoyed all of the new things I have learnt. All these experiences have allowed me to develop my skills to be a good teacher and I can’t wait to implement what I’ve learnt in my own classroom, here at HeadStart. What I enjoy most about teaching is how the students can express themselves in Thai and understand conversation as well. To enhance this experience, I would source new materials for the lessons and I keep updated with the more recent communicative approaches. My method is mostly based on communication and also adding culture and language games for a more enjoyable learning environment. This will be my second academic year teaching at HeadStart International School. I’d like to thank you for this opportunity. This is a very good working experience in my life to be a Thai teacher in this fabulous school. In This academic year, I will be teaching 7 class levels start from Reception, Year 3, Year 5, Year 6 for primary and Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 for secondary. I am excited for the year’s adventures and will make sure I provide a positive and learning experience for all my students. Please contact me at: [email protected]
