Learner of the Month - Inquisitive in Thai Language

This month we celebrate the achievements of students across our Primary classes who have been inquisitive in their Thai lessons. Congratulations to Aviva (Year 1), Naya (Year 2), Ian (Year 3), Amelia (Year 4), Mashun (Year 5) and Way (Year 6). You should be very proud of your efforts which have been recognised by your dedicated Thai teachers and our Thai department.

HeadStart Cherngtalay Expansion - Phase 2

Following the highly successful opening of our new campus in August 2023, HeadStart International School Cherngtalay Campus is excited to announce the next phase of our development plan as we look to expand our state-of-the-art facilities to ensure an even more enriching learning environment for our burgeoning school community in the north of Phuket. We are now excited to confirm the second phase of development due for completion by August 2024. This will see the expansion of our Foundation and Primary classrooms to two form entry (a total of 408 students) along with the introduction of a Secondary programme, with two classes (or 48 students) per year group from Year 7 to Year 9. The transformation to a two-form entry school marks a significant milestone. This expansion reflects our commitment to meeting the growing demand for quality education and allows us to welcome more students into our vibrant learning community, fostering diversity and enriching the educational experience for all - 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜.

Halloween Dress Up and Activity Day

Primary students are also encouraged to come to school dressed to impress (and SCARE!) as they will take part in Halloween activities during one lesson in their timetable and at break times when there will be a range of craft activities to stimulate the senses (and maybe cause a little SHRIEK!).

Eco School Update

As we begin afresh after the Midterm break I wanted to introduce you to the latest HeadStart initiative; HeadStart Eco School.

HeadStart is well known for the work it does to minimise its impact on the environment and foster more sustainable practices. As a school community, we are committed to ensuring we can work towards even greater sustainable practices, within the school and within the community. Working with the school leadership team, we have created the HeadStart Eco School as a way of organising and enhancing our practices. Over the coming years, we will work to raise Awareness, identify Actions we can take, Assimilate sustainable practices into the classroom and curriculum and Advocate for change throughout the community.

One of the most important parts of this is the introduction of Eco School Committees led by students and helped along by passionate educators. We will be creating 2 committees - Foundation & Key Stage 1 (Preschool-Year 3) and Key Stage 2 (Years 4-6) - and working to recruit student volunteers to represent their Homeroom in these committees as Eco School Ambassadors. These committees will help identify, plan and drive activities across the school and will link with the committees at our City campus. Recruitment for the committees will take place in the coming weeks.

We are really excited about this development and look forward to sharing our work with you and involving you in our activities as much as we possibly can.

Did You Know: HeadStart collects food waste, with students separating their food waste into different bins. This is then collected, every day, by local farmers to be turned into food for pigs and ducks on the island. A great example of sustainable circularity.

Request: Please collect washed (we can’t use dirty bottles), plastic drinks bottles (with labels removed) along with the plastic lids. If providing milk bottles, please wash these thoroughly. Bring them into school where we will begin the process of collecting. With the help of Mr. Gratton at our City campus, all bottles will be repurposed into items we can use in the school.

Something To Think About: With Halloween approaching, you will be thinking about decorations and costumes. But what are the possible environmental impacts of these one off decorations? We can look to reduce plastic waste by not buying throw away plastic decorations and make a choice to buy or make paper or reusable decorations and costumes. Fast Fashion such as plastic (polyester) costumes have a huge impact on the environment at every stage of the production process. So, when making your Halloween choices over the next few days, consider the hidden Horrors of a plastic heavy Halloween. See the links below for some more thoughts on a reduced plastic Halloween.

Parent Meetings & Presentations

Parent Meeting 7: Helping your Child with Behaviour

Thank you to the many Foundation parents who joined us for our latest parent meeting and workshop about child behaviour. It was great to have such a large turnout and we thanks all parents for their contributions! Miss Danielle talked us through the range of strategies that children learn at school to help them with their behaviour, including self-regulation and how to manage their emotions. The highlight of the presentation was watching the video about children asked to self-regulate and not eat a marshmallow, with the reward…an additional marshmallow! It was clear the empathy parents felt towards the children, and it is this understanding that helps us to better understand our children’s actions and behaviour.

Parent Meeting 8: Introduction to CAPA Programmes at HeadStart

We welcome all parents to join us for our latest parent meeting when we will talk you through the different Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) programmes that are available, including dance, drama, music and singing. Our CAPA team will also give hints and tips on how to bring out the creativity in your child and ensure they get the most out of the opportunities our programmes offer. We look forward to seeing you there! Thursday 2nd November 2023 from 8:15-9:30am in the Indoor Learning Centre (ILC).

Phuket Sunshine Village Fundraiser

Each year, as a school community we are committed to raising money for the children of Phuket Sunshine Village. Our goal is to raise 3,000 Baht for each child. This donation will cover a child’s new school uniform, socks and shoes, transport to and from school and school lunch for one whole year. Such a contribution can make a huge difference to the lives of PSV children and serves to strengthen our ties with the local community and develop ways in which we can educate our own students to share the good fortune that we enjoy.

We welcome members of our community to donate individually, as a family, a company or as a classroom. Please consider joining this appeal and donating towards the living cost of a child in need. Our PSV donation drive has already begun. Contact your child’s homeroom teacher or the front office for more details and get involved today!

Practising Important Life Skills during Foundation Lunchtime

This week, we invited parents of our Foundation children to a workshop about behaviour and self-regulation. One essential part of the school day when children are encouraged to develop these skills and strategies is during a very important daily ritual - lunchtime!

Food and healthy eating plays a fundamental role in young children’s self-regulation by providing the essential nutrients necessary for cognitive and emotional development. A well-balanced diet can support blood sugar levels, which in turn helps children better manage their emotions and focus on their learning.

As you can see, our Preschool children are learning the very important life skill of washing their hands before enjoying a healthy, balanced lunch. Meanwhile, their friends in Early Years take the opportunity to work up an appetite before washing their hands and tucking into their well-earned lunchtime meal, and students in Reception class are encouraged to exercise choice in the foods that they enjoy to fuel the rest of their day!

Purposeful Storytelling in Year 6

This week in Year 6, we have been busy publishing our adventure story opening chapters. The children have been so independent and reflective, making sure they think carefully about the purpose of their stories as they edited and improved their ideas. The children then had the opportunity to read their stories to some students from Year 3. They found somewhere comfy to cosy up and read some of the best writing they have ever written! The Year 3s were a fantastic audience and loved hearing the entertaining writing - well done team!
