Parenting Tips

This article is not intended to either promote or discourage spanking, but rather is intended to promote the importance of showing respect for others.

Sadly, in today’s world rudeness is so pervasive that we can no longer expect that everyone will show respect for others. Entertainment media today, often celebrates ‘doing your own thing’ which can take precedence over considering the needs of others. Moreover, our modern, fast-lane lives mean we make less time for consideration and niceties. It should not be surprising then, that rudeness has been reported as a major cause of stress in society. Thus, behaving politely isn’t merely a formality, but about treating others with courtesy so that they feel comfortable and at ease. When we make good manners a focus of our interactions with others, we all become a little happier and a little more relaxed.

Clearly, it is our duty as parents and teachers to instil our children with this critical value in order to help them to become kind, considerate, honest, open-minded, and grateful adults. When, for example, children say ‘thank you’ after something is given to them, they are acknowledging that there’s a mutual exchange going on. By learning this important ‘give-and-take’ lesson, children begin to learn how good manners work and why they matter so much.

The positive results of politeness are often overlooked and undervalued, but good manners are a reflection of the Golden Rule: if you are nice to me, I’ll be nice to you. A teenager with nice manners is more likely to be successful at a college or job interview and a well-mannered student is more likely to enjoy friendships and be well liked by teachers.

Of course, walking the walk is the most effective way to teach children respectful behaviour, so always endeavour to model yourself what you want your children to learn.

Announcements

House Mascot Contest

Students were asked to choose a mascot to represent their house. Individuals or groups of students from the same house came together to design the mascot with original art. In order to be considered, students had to also give reasons why their mascot would be a good choice to represent their house. Finally during a House Team meeting, the students voted for their choice. We announced the winners at the Flag Raising Ceremony last Monday. Here are the winners and their beautifully designed mascots!

Red Cardinals

Created by Silvana Dufes 6A and Rika Harris 6B Cardinals are “very competitive birds and hate to lose! They are also fierce, yet kind and friendly. Cardinals always win!”

Blue Tigers

Created by Calvin Van Der Laan 5A, James Van Herzeele 6B, Nicki Kasatkin 4A Tigers are “fierce and determined to win, yet one of nature’s best representatives of a caring and protective mother. They are also quick, brave, sly, quiet and precise.”

Yellow Cheetahs

Created by Dasha Belous 5A Cheetahs “can run faster than any other land animal. Also cheetahs are predators so we can scare everyone and win!”

Green Dragons (Drago the Dragon)

Created by Vy Nguyen 9A and Jil Habermacher 9A “Dragons represent strength and wisdom. They are the lord of the beasts and great-grandfather of mankind. The HeadStart symbol is inside the loop which means our team is winning its prize! Drago the dragon has spikes that show our strength.”

Parent Portal is Launched in Foundation!

Last Tuesday on the 21st of January, Mr. Edouard, Head of School, gave a presentation on the Parent Portal for the Foundation parents. We hope all attendees found this presentation helpful and informative.

Reception A and B Swim Carnival

HeadStart Reception A and B participated in a swim carnival at FunStart on Thursday January 16th. This was a very enjoyable event for everyone involved, with many parents attending. A big thank you again to everyone who assisted and made the event a great success. Dean Jackson

Early Years Learns How to Play and Write!

Early Years have been trying out our new Roll ‘n’ Write alphabet letters and numbers. They place a small metal ball on the start arrow and then it rolls in the correct way that we form each alphabet letter or number.

Early Years students have learned how to play “Duck, Duck, Goose”. They sit nicely in a circle while one child goes around tapping each person, while saying “Duck”, when they tap and call someone “Goose” he/she jumps up and chases them all the way back around the circle.

Reception Classes Visit the Butterfly Garden

The children enjoyed learning about the life cycle of the butterfly and loved the experience of seeing the eggs, cocoons and beautiful coloured butterflies in the garden-centre habitat. It was a great experience for them to have the butterflies land on them so that they could see this delicate insect in more detail.

Year 2A Assembly about Healthy Foods!

Year 2A has been learning about healthy food choices and the different food groups! We made pictures of different foods and sang a song called “Food Groups are Rockin’ Tonight”.

Year 2A Learns about Thermometers

We are learning about the weather and we have been practising how to read the temperature using thermometers. It was a hot day outside!

Be careful of the crocodiles!!!

On Thursday 23rd, Y2 had their French class outside playing “The Crocodile River”. The games goal was to differentiate the masculine, the feminine, and the plural of the body and face parts. They had to jump from one line to another avoiding the crocodiles in the river. Hopefully, they are all safe!!!

Khun Tuk Visits Year 10

Yesterday Khun Tuk, a Thai parent, joined the Year 10 Thai class and shared her experience about how to write a formal letter asking for assistance from a Thai government office. The topic is related to past papers from IGCSE Thai first language. Khun Tuk is now a member of ‘Young Business Professional Women Federation of Thailand, Phuket Chapter’. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to be with our students.

Saturday Thai Culture Club

Last Saturday, the Thai teachers organised a fieldtrip to a rice farm at Ban Mai Kao. Students visited a rice plantation where the farmer showed the students around and taught them about the process of growing rice. It was a great event for all involved!

We would like to introduce you to our new outdoor learning environment called ‘Thai Garden’. The Thai Garden is at the back of the cafe near the football pitch. Thank you to the Thai parents and students who have donated plants for this project.

Swimming Gala Information for students in Years 3-11

HeadStart are proud to announce the annual House Swimming Gala for Secondary Students. The gala will take place at FunStart on Thursday 30th January from 11:45am to 2:45pm and involves all Secondary students. Parents are cordially invited to the event.

The details are as follows:

• All events take place at FunStart; - Student races are posted in the homeroom of each class; - All students should bring their swimming suit / goggles/ water / towel; - Every student will be competing for their house; - At the end the event students will come back to school.

**Primary Years 3 and 4 **Races will begin at 08:30am and finish at 09:45am.

**Primary Years 5 and 6 **Races will begin at 10:00am and finish at 11:30am.

**Secondary Years 9, 10 and 11 **Races will begin at 12:15pm and finish at 13:30pm.

**Secondary Years 7 and 8 **Races will begin at 13:30pm and finish at 14:40pm

บทความนี้ไม่ได้มีเจตนาในการที่จะส่งเสริมหรือสนับสนุนให้ใช้การลงโทษแต่อย่างใด แต่สิ่งที่เราต้องการนำเสนอก็คือ ความหมายนัยสำคัญของข้อความนี้ นั้นคือ การให้ความสำคัญในการความเคารพซึ่งกันและกัน

เป็นที่น่าเศร้าที่ทุกวันนี้มีแต่การแสดงความโหดร้ายทารุณในทุกที่ จนราวกับว่าเราจะไม่สามารถมองหาหรือคาดหวังหาความเคารพ และ การให้เกียรติ์ซึ่งกันและกันจากคนรอบข้างได้

แม้แต่การเลือกการสันทนาการในปันจุบันนี้ก็เป็นไปด้วยแบบที่เป็นเลือกที่จะตอบสนองความต้องการของตนเองมากจนเกินไปมากกว่าที่จะมองว่าคนอื่นต้องการอะไรบ้าง ยิ่งไปกว่านี้จากสภาพการดำรงชีวิตที่เร่งรีบในปัจจุบันนี้ ยิ่งเป็นปัจจัยที่ทำให้เราไม่มีเวลาที่จะสังเกตุหรือพิจารณาถึงสิทธิและความต้องการของบุคคลอื่น

จึงไม่น่าแปลกใจเลยว่าทำไมทุกวันนี้จึงมีแต่การรายงานข่าวเรื่องความรุนแรงโดยทั่วไปในสังคมจนเสมือนว่านั้นได้กลายเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของสังคมเราไปแล้ว ด้วยเหตุนี้การที่เราปฏิบัติต่อกันด้วยความสุภาพและสำรวมจึงไม่ใช่แค่เป็นการทำให้เกิดความเป็นระเบียบเรียบร้อยในสังคมเท่านั้น แต่นั้นเป็นการสั่งสอนให้รู้จักที่จะปฏิบัติต่อกั้นด้วยความสุภาพซึ่งสิ่งเหล่านี้นั้นจะยังผลให้ผู้ที่ปฏิบัติมีความสุขและผ่อนคลายในการที่จะปฏิบัติต่อกัน

แน่นอนว่านี้คือหน้าที่ของเราผู้ปกครองและคุณครูที่จะต้องคอยสอน อบรมเด็กๆให้มีความกรุณา รู้จักคิด พิจารณา สุภาพ ใจกว้าง เพื่อที่เด็กของเราจะได้โตขึ้นมาเป็นผู้ใหญ่ที่มีคุณภาพ

ยกตัวอย่างเช่นว่า เราสอนให้เด็กรู้จักพูดคำว่า “ขอบคุณ” ในทุกครั้งที่เราให้ของบางสิ่งบางอย่างกับเขา ซึ่งนั้นจะเป็นการสอนให้เขาได้รับรู้ว่า สิ่งนั้นที่เขาทำอยู่เป็นสิ่งที่ควรทำต่อกัน และต่อมาก็จะกลายมาเป็นวิถีทางของการแลกเปลี่ยน กับทั้งเราต้องรู้จักสอนให้เด็กรู้จักการเป็นทั้งผู้ให้และผู้รับ อีกทั้งยังต้องสอนให้เด็กรู้จักวิถีการแสดงออกทุกด้านในแบบสุภาพและสอนให้เค้าได้เล็งเห็นถึงความสำคัญของสิ่งนั้นว่าเพราะเหตุใดจึงต้องจำเป็นที่ต้องทำอย่างนั้น

มีการผลการวิจัย พบว่าบุคคลหรือพฤติกรรมที่ไม่สุภาพ หยาบคาย บุคคลผู้นั้นหรือ พฤติกรรมนั้นจะเป็นสิ่งที่ถูกมองข้าม กลายเป็นคนไม่มีค่า แต่บุคคลผู้ที่เลือกที่จะปฏิบัติออกมาด้วยความสุภาพเสมือนเป็นกฏทอง ก็จะได้รับการปฏิบัติที่ดีกลับมาเหมือนดังคำพูดที่ว่า “หากว่าคุณดีกับฉัน ฉันก็จะดีกับคุณ (If you are nice to me, I’ll be nice to you.)

นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่าเด็กวัยรุ่นที่มีพฤติกรรมที่สุภาพ เรียบร้อยโดยมากจะประสบความสำเร็จ ทั้งในการเรียน การสัมภาษณ์สมัครงาน ทั้งยังเป็นบุคคลที่มีเพื่อนมากและเป็นที่ชื่นชมของครู อาจารย์อีกด้วย

แน่นอนว่า มีมากมายหลายวิธีที่เราจะสามารถอบรมสั่งสอนเด็กๆของเราให้รู้จัก สุภาพ มีความเคารพซึ่งกันและกัน โดยเราควรทำตัวให้เป็นแบบอย่างให้กับเด็กโดยจำไว้เสมอว่า ถ้าคุณอยากให้ลูกของคุณเป็นอย่างไร คุณก็ต้องทำตัวเยี่ยงนั้นให้ลูกคุณดู

House Mascot Contest การประกวดการออกแบบสัตว์นำโชค

นักเรียนทุกคนสามารถมีส่วนร่วมในกิจกรรมการออกแบบสัตว์นำโชคประจำบ้านของตัวเอง ซึ่งเราได้จัดแบ่งกลุ่มให้นักเรียนอยู่ประจำแต่ละบ้าน (เหมือนในหนังแฮรี่พอตเตอร์) ภายใต้การตกลงกันของนักเรียนเองว่าทำไมถึงเลือกสิ่งนี้มาเป็นสัตว์นำโชคประจำบ้านของตัวเอง

และในรอบสุดท้ายของการเฟ้นหาบทสรุปของการคัดเลือก เรามีการจัดประชุมทีมแต่ละทีมเพื่อให้นักเรียนได้เลือกสัตว์นำโชคที่ได้ทำการออกแบบมา และผู้ชนะที่รับเลือกก็จะได้เอาสัญลักษณ์ที่ออกแบบมาทำเป็นธงประจำบ้านและประกาศอย่างเป็นทางการ และนี่คือผลงานของผู้ชนะเลิศของแต่ละบ้านและผลงานการออกแบบสัตว์นำโชคที่สวยงามของเขาทั้งหลาย

Blue tigers เป็นสัญลักษณ์ของความดุดันและแน่วแน่ที่จะชนะ โดยนิสัยคือจะ ดูแลปกป้องผู้เป็นแม่ กล้าหาญ คล่องแคล่ว เงียบขรึมและเฉียบขาด

-Yellow Cheetahs

ออกแบบโดย Dasha Belous ชั้น Y5A

Cheetahs วิ่งได้เร็วกว่าสัตว์ใดและยังเป็นผู้ล่าที่น่าเกรงขามและประสบความสำเร็จในการล่าเสมอ

มังกรเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของพลังและปัญญา ทั้งยังเป็นเจ้าแห่งสัตว์ดุร้ายและเป็นบรรพบุรุษของมนุษยชาติ ในภาพที่ออกแบบจะมีสัญลักษณ์ของโรงเรียนHeadstartด้านในอ้อมกอดของมังกรเพื่อแสดงถึงความเป็นน้ำหนึ่งใจเดียวกันของทีมที่จะคว้าชัยชนะทุกการแข่งขัน อีกทั้งเดือยแหลมที่ยื่นออกมาตามปีกและหางนั้นเพื่อแสดงให้เห็นถึงความเข็มแข็ง

ณ โอกาสนี้ขอขอบคุณผู้ที่มีส่วนร่วมช่วยห้าได้มีความคิดที่หลากหลาย

-ข่าวสารจากฝ่ายอนุบาล (Foundation news)

เมื่อวันอังคาร ที่ 21 มกราคม 2557 ที่ผ่านมา คุณ เจสัน ผู้อำนวยการโรงเรียนได้เปิดบรรยายเพื่อการใช้โปรแกรม Parent portal ให้สำหรับผู้ปกครองนักเรียนในระดับชั้นอนุบาล ซึ่งทางโรงเรียนหวังเป็นอย่างยิ่งว่าการอบรมในครั้งนี้จะช่วยอำนวยความสะดวกอีกทั้งให้ข้อมูลความรู้ที่เป็นประโยชน์แก่ผู้ปกครอง

ภาพที่แสนน่ารักของเหล่านักเรียนเตรียมอนุบาล เด็กน้อยวัยไร้เดียงสาในชั่วโมงเรียนซึ่ง เขาได้รับทั้งความสนุกสนานและความสุขแม้จะเป็นเด็กที่เพิ่งเข้ามาให้ก็ตาม โดยจะอยู่ภายใต้การดูแลของ คุณ Dean

-Reception A and Reception B

ที่ผ่านมาทางโรงเรียน Headstart ได้จัดงานว่ายน้ำสำหรับนักเรียนในระดับ Reception A,B ที่สระว่ายน้ำของFunstart ซึ่งในรูปภาพจะเห็นความสนุกสนานของเหล่านักเรียนที่เข้าร่วมกิจกรรมพร้อมทั้งผู้ปกครองที่คอยให้กำลังใจอยู่ข้างๆ ขอขอบพระคุณอีกครั้งสำหรับทุกท่านที่ให้ความช่วยเหลือช่วยให้งานนี้สำเร็จเสร็จสิ้นไปได้ด้วยดี

-เด็กนักเรียนEarly year กับการอ่านเขียน

เด็กนักเรียนที่มาเรียนในชั้นปีนี้นอกจากจะได้รับการดูแลแล้วเด็กยังจะได้เรียนรู้วิธีการเริ่มหัดเขียนตัวอักษรอีกทั้งตัวเลขให้ถูกหลักวิธีด้วย โดยเด็กจะเริ่มเขียนลากเส้นตามโครงร่างของจุดแล้วลากไปตามเส้นในทิศทางที่ถูกต้องตามแบบของตัวอักษรและตัวเลข นอกจากนี้นักเรียนจะได้เรียน วิธีการเล่น “เป็ด เป็ด ห่าน” โดยที่เด็กทุกคนจะนั่งล้อมวงกันประจำที่ของตัวเองแล้วกะมีเด็ก 1 คน เดินไปรอบๆเป็นวงกลมแล้วเขาก็จะเลือกแตะคนใดคนหนึ่งพร้อมกับพูดว่า “เป็ด” ส่วนคนที่ถูกแตะก็จะร้องว่า “กูซ” แล้วก็ลุกขึ้นวิ่งไล่คนที่มาแตะเป็นวงกลม (คล้ายๆกับการเล่นมอญซ่อนผ้าของไทยเรา)

-บรรยากาศการทัศนศึกษาสวนผีเสื้อของเหล่านักเรียนชั้นอนุบาล

เราได้จัดไปทัศนศึกษานอกสถานที่สำหรับเด็กชั้นอนุบาลโดยการจัดทัศนศึกษาไปดูผีเสื้อ ตลอดทั้งวงจรชีวิตของผีเสื้อ และแมลงต่างๆ ภาพเหล่านักเรียนสนุกสนานกับการทัศนศึกษาดูวงจรชีวิตของผีเสื้อตั้งแต่เป็นไข่ จนกระทั้งกลายออกมาเป็นผีเสื้อแสนสวยที่โบยบินในสวน นั้นเป็นประสบการณ์ที่สวยงามสำหรับเด็กที่ได้รับ ณ สวนผีเสื้อ

-ข่าวสารของเด็กปฐมต้น (Primary News)

ภาพเด็กนักเรียนชั่น Y2 กำลังเรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับการเลือกรับประทานอาหารที่ดีต่อสุขภาพซึ่งเราได้ทำภาพของอาหารและผลไม้ต่างๆ และในระหว่างที่เรียนเราให้นักเรียนร้องเพลง

ภาพด้านล่างเป็นภาพการเรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับเรื่องอุณหภูมิโดยเรียนรู้วิธีการใช้เทอร์โมมิเตอร์ และวิธีการอ่านในวันที่อากาศแสนจะร้อนแต่เต็มเปี่ยมไปด้วยความสนุ กสนาน

วัน พฤหัสบดี ที่ 23 มกราคม 2557ที่ผ่านมาในคาบเรียนภาษาฝรั่งเศส เราได้จัดให้มีการเรียนการสอนขึ้นที่สนามเด็กเล่นโดยจัดเล่นเกม “The crocodile river”เพื่อเป็นการเรียนรู้ความแตกต่างของเพศชาย-หญิง ส่วนต่างๆ ของใบหน้าและร่างกาย โดยนักเรียนจะต้องกระโดดไปตามเส้นเชือกที่ทำขึ้นมาแล้วไปช่วยเพื่อนจากจระเข้ในแม่น้ำ โอ้ว!!! หวังว่าเขาคงจะปลอดภัยนะ

ล่าสุด คุณ ตุ๊กซึ่งเป็นผู้ปกครองของนักเรียน และยังเป็นผู้ที่ประกอบธุรกิจแล้วประสบผลสำเร็จในตอนที่อายุยังน้อยของภูเก็ต(อายุน้อยร้อยล้าน)ได้ให้เกียรติ์มาเยี่ยมชมและแลกเปลี่ยนประสบการณ์ ในชั้นเรียนของ Y10 ในชั่วโมงภาษาไทย เป็นการแลกเปลี่ยนประสบการณ์และให้คำแนะนำในด้านการเขียนจดหมาย ซึ่งคุณ ตุ๊กได้เคยเขียนจดหมายเพื่อขอความอนุเคราะห์จากทางรัฐบาลไทย หัวข้อเรื่องที่นำมาพูดคุยกันก็จะมีความเกี่ยวเนื่องกับโปรแกรมการเรียนในระบบ IGCSE ของหมวดภาษาไทย ทางโรงเรียนHeadstart จึ่งใคร่ขอขอบพระคุณในความกรุณาที่ได้สละเวลาที่มีค่าเพื่อมาให้ความรู้แก่นักเรียนของเราไว้ ณ โอกาสนี้ด้วย

วันเสาร์ที่แล้วเราได้จัดการเรียนเกี่ยวกับวัฒนธรรมไทยให้กับทางนักเรียน ไปกับ Thai culture club โดยได้พานักเรียนไปดูการทำนา การเก็บเกี่ยวข้าวของชาวนาที่บ้านไม้ขาว นักเรียนได้ไปเยี่ยมชมนาข้าวโดยชาวนาพร้อมกันนี้ชาวนาก็ได้อธิบายวิธีการปลูกข้าวให้กับนักเรียนด้วย นับได้ว่าเป็นประสบการณ์ที่ดีสำหรับเด็กนักเรียนที่เข้าร่วม

-เรียนรู้พันธ์ไม้ไทย ที่ Thai Garden

เราขอนำเสนอการเรียนรู้นอกสถานที่อีกหนี่งที่เพื่อเป็นการเปลี่ยนบรรยากาศการเรียนรู้ ที่ สวนพันธ์ไม้ไทย ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ด้านหลังใกล้สนามฟุตบอล ต้องขอขอบพระคุณท่านผู้ปกครองคนไทยไว้ ณ โอกาสนี้ด้วยที่ได้ให้ความอนุเคราะห์บริจาคพันธ์ไม้ให้กับทางสวนเพื่อให้นักเรียนของเราได้ทำการศึกษา
