Awards Ceremony/Year 13 Graduation
On Monday, 25 June, we will have our annual Awards Ceremony and Year 13 Graduation. Parents of the award winners and of Year 13 students have been invited to this event via email. Although we would like to invite all parents and relatives to participate in this event, unfortunately we have limited seating and therefore are only able to accommodate the parents listed above. We would, however, like to encourage you to participate in sending off our Year 13s at 3:20 pm as they walk through the atrium and wave their final goodbye to HeadStart! There will be cars ready to take the students to a gala dinner right after the ceremony. We apologise in advance for the disturbance this will cause to traffic coming and going to school and thank you in advance for your understanding and support.
Foundation/Primary End of Year Parent Teacher Conferences
Next week the Primary Homeroom teachers will be hosting the Primary End of Year Parent Teacher Conferences (PTCs). You are all invited to meet, and discuss your child’s learning, and progress over the course of this last academic year with your child’s Homeroom teacher.
Parent Teacher Conference appointments can be booked through the Engage Parent Portal, and you should all have received an email informing you that the booking facility was open. Please note that the PTC booking facility will be available until 5:00pm this coming Monday 25th June. The PTCs themselves will take place from 3.30pm on Tuesday 26th, Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th June.
Secondary Department News

Thank you for your help and support with your child’s school experience this academic year. May I take this opportunity to wish you a safe and relaxing summer break. Please note that next week will be very busy in secondary school.
We have the year 7&8 PTC Parent teacher Conferences on the 27th June 2018 please book your appointments through engage and meet your child’s teachers to look at next steps for the coming year. On the 25th of June we have the prestigious awards ceremony and the Graduation. I am sure like me you wish our year 13 graduates the best of luck in their university places next academic year.
Please ensure your child has returned all of their text books to the correct teacher. We will be invoicing parents next week for any missing books.
Last day for our students is the 28th of June, 2018 there will be full lessons before lunch then after lunch Home Room activities. On this day student may wear there P.E. kits/House coloured shirts.
House News: Yellow Cheetahs House Winning Prize
Congratulations to the Yellow House for winning the House competition for Term 3. On Tuesday, 26th June the Yellow Cheetahs must come to school wearing their House shirts.
Reception and Year 1 & 2 - Will be collected from their classrooms at 9:50am by Miss Fallows and Miss Scott. They will watch a movie in the sports hall, and then head to the lunch hall for a pizza party. Year 3-13. Go to homerooms as normal. Directly after registration they should head to the lunch hall to meet Mr Carter & Miss Brelstaff before heading to Central Mall. The students will watch ‘Incredibles 2’ at 9:30 am. After the movie, the primary students will have lunch at Sizzler, and the secondary students will eat at Pizza Company. Students will arrive back to class at approximately 13:30pm. Don’t forget, Cheetahs, you must wear your House shirts!!
Football/Swimming Summer Camps 2018
Football and Swim Academies have swim camps available for one week prior to the start of school. Each camp will start August 13 and finish Aug 16th.
Aquatics and football camps costs 3,500 Baht and will run from 9:00am-12:00pm (aquatics) and 1:00-4:00pm (football). Each session will include technical development and other sport related skills.
Swim Lessons are for students who need to develop water confidence and stamina to be on par with their class. These will run for 30 minute sessions.

Sports Awards 2018

On Thursday, 14 June, 2018, the school held its annual Sports Awards Ceremony. Over three hundred parents and students came to the event to celebrate the effort and commitment our students have put into all their sporting activities this year. Those attending were treated to a sophisticated ceremony which included; awards presentations, highlight videos and speeches, whilst being served food and drink at their tables. The event was about celebrating the individual and collective efforts our students have put into their respective sports over the year.
All of the PE Staff believe that every one of our students deserves to receive recognition for their effort, determination and their contribution to their respective teams. Although some of the students received awards, and they are well deserved, the whole event was really about rewarding all of our athletes for their commitment this year. Each athlete deserves praise and recognition.
Sport is fundamentally about being part of something that is bigger than the individual: whether it is playing in a team or being an individual representing others – family, Houses, school or hopefully one day your country. Therefore we should always be thankful to others who help us achieve: our coaches, teachers and very importantly family. I have been involved in sports and specifically youth sports for Forty years now and I have witnessed first-hand the power that it has to unite people, grow individuals and help define who and what we are. But if you do not believe me then listen to what this man had to say:

She has a ‘Never say die attitude’. She pushes herself through the pain barrier to compete and give her all – some amazing performances this year in track and field and cross country.

Secondary End of Year Party 2018

Primary Drama Club Final Presentation

The drama club presented two short, amusing plays on June 20th in the fourth floor exam hall, The Mule Egg and Catch Me If You Can. The Mule Egg - Jed doesn’t appreciate his hard-working mule and is convinced fate has smiled on him when he discovers a coconut and mistakes it for a mule egg. He learns a good lesson through his ensuing troubles. Princess Atalanta – King Henry plans to marry off his lovely daughter, Atalanta, choosing her husband through a race, but she just so happens to be the fastest runner in the kingdom and has a mind of her own. And so does Young John. Another year! Another success! Well done, young thespians!
Ballet Recital
To celebrate the end of a fun and artistic year, 45 ballerinas from the HeadStart Dance Academy presented “Wonderland” last Friday. We went on a little journey through a world where little black cats from Reception, pretty rabbits from Early Years, multicolored butterflies from Year 1 (coming out of tea cups) and graceful playing cards from Year 1 to Year 4, presented port de bras, attitude, pretty swings and arabesques to the melodies of Alfred Reynolds’ music from Alice through the Looking-Glass Suite. At the end they finally meet Alice performed by Juliette Guillerey.
The dancers were then treated to a tea party and received awards for their achievements in Ballet. Big congratulation to all of the dancers for their hard work and dedication to this special discipline. They made their parents and teachers very proud!

Reception have been learning that Running is a great way to keep fit and healthy but also have lots of fun. They have been doing chasing games, team running relays and simply running fast for fun!
This is how the pupils learn to swim: with lots of individual help in Preschool and from this they can develop into good swimmers in the future like these older students who are doing swimming as part of their IGCSE. By Ms Fiona Whittaker
During the Early Years swimming lessons the children work on stroke development and always have time for free play at the end. They have fun with their teachers and fiends. They are able to swim across the whole width of the pool without stopping. I am particularly impressed with their ability to do the backstroke without any flotation aid which is a fantastic achievement at only 4yrs old. By Ms Fiona Whittaker

Year 6 Enterprise
Over the past 8 weeks, Year 6 have been planning their enterprise project to raise money for an end of term treat. They have designed, planned, promoted and created their own tasty products to sell to the HeadStart community. The sale was a huge success and the teams made a huge 15,717 Baht profit! The profits will go towards book vouchers for the children and an end of term party. By Ms Sophie Webb
World Scholars Cup in Malaysia
This week the Junior Scholars that have qualified for the Global Round of the ever challenging World Scholars’ Cup have traveled to Kuala Lumpur for the next round. Ms Milner and Mr O’Nions have accompanied the young scholars as they debate, collaboratively write and bowl there way to victory. This year for the first time the HeadStart team have prepared a stall for the Cultural fair to show scholars’ from all around the World what is so special about Thailand. We wish them all the best and can’t wait to hear all about their experiences. By Mr Peter Mason
History Bee and Bowl
Two teams from HeadStart made the International History Bee and Bowl Championships! This is a buzzer based History quiz competetion between two teams. Back in March they defeated the British International School to qualify for the Championships which were held last weekend at the beautiful JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort. The two teams batted against other teams in their age groups from all over Asia, answering questions that most historians would find a challenge I’m sure! Unfortunately we didn’t come home with a medal this year, but the students are more enriched with their historical knowledge of the world and their curiosity is now boundless. The week sees the end of our Year 11 participation in the HeadStart Work Experience Programme 2018. Our students have been sent to the widest range of local businesses yet. The experiences they have shared with us back at school have really surprised us. They have embraces a huge variety of tasks, challenges, responsibilities and accomplishments in their industrial placements.
The goals of the programme are;

To expose students to the realities of the world and culture of work

To promote realistic, informed career choices by students

To develop positive attitudes to work

More specifically, we aim to help students;

Understand the basic structure of companies and the functions of the various departments or sections

To make connections between theoretical concepts from their school subjects i.e. Maths, Science, IT, Communication and their practical applications in commerce and industry

Develop an understanding of company processes and how the various activities involved are inter-related

Gain first-hand information about relevant career paths

Get a “feel” for different work environments
What are students expected to do?
In brief, we wish the students to take part in the day-to-day work activities of the company, through a process that affords them opportunities to do actual work, to observe qualified personnel at work and to ask questions.

Secondary Work Experience Report
By students Serena and Meow in Year 11
Day 1 Our work experience were separated to 3 sections for the first 2 days we were assigned to do food and beverage. We started off making different kinds of coffee and tasting each cup. We learned how to make each one and how to whisk the foam in order to make cappuccino or latte. We then moved on to making different shakes and mocktails by following the staff’s recipe and mixing different drinks following customer’s orders. We learned how to make virgin Mai Thai and virgin Pina colada.
Day 2 We did more of the practical work this day. We started clearing up the breakfast buffet in the morning and started putting table cloths on each dining table to prepare for the day. We learned how to set the table up for a Chinese style table and which cutlery goes where. We learned how to fold the tissue to place the cutlery inside as well. We also took customer orders and gave orders to the kitchen and served food and drinks. We also cleaned the cups, glasses, tables and some of the dishes after the customer has finished eating/drinking. We have also helped clean the shelves in the bar area. We have also learned how to write bills.
Day 3 We have moved on to the front office section. I worked in the reception area and Meow worked the the reservation area.
Serena (reception):
I learned what a reception had to do each day and the timings of checking in, checking out and room prices. I learned the check in and check out steps in this hotel and how to run the hotel’s basic systems. I learned how to answer the phone once customers call the reception and what to say to them. Customers came up to talk to me as well which I was able to tell them some information I’ve learned. I have also learned the key card system and money machine on how to use them.
Meow (reservations):
I learned a bit of Marketing technique that Mr. Steve uses in his business, the key of successful marketing rely on Market research. I also learned how reservationist had to do each day. They communicate between an agent and the hotel. I learned how to reply email and booked room through Easyfo front office application.
Day 4 We started off the day by washing the cups and cleaning the floor next to the bar before continuing work in the front office. We couldn’t do as much today due to the power cut. We helped around the hotel instead. Customers were complaining about the power cut and we learned how to deal with customer complaints and explain to them the problems and solutions. While waiting for the power to come back on we came to work in Hemingways Patong instead.
Day 5 Today I’ve learned how to check in and check out, and understanding how different shift of reception work. The morning shift have to deal with a lot of work such as checking in & out, call the customer if they request a wake up call.
Day 7 Today we started off the day by learning reservation and then cleaning the floor as usual and folded tissues and helped out with the food and beverage section as the accounting section had a lot of bills to clear first before being able to teach us. We walked to hemmingways Patong at 1:00 pm and we started looking at the accounting formats and different type bills. The lady in the accounting office explained the different roles in accounting and what each person does. She also showed us the program that they use for their accounting.
Last Day We started off the day by helping with the bar and cleaning the cups. We spent our last day in the reception. We checked in a group of customers and also added their information in the system. I copied their passports and Meow was in charge of keeping the documents and passport copies. We had to help deal with customer complaints and see how the hotel overcame the problems that occurred.
