In return for a minimum donation of 50 baht, students are welcome to come to school wearing vibrant colours and sunshiney clothes to brighten the day and demonstrate their generosity of spirit to raise money for the children at PSV. Meet the Team

The Thai team at HeadStart Cherngtalay plays a key role in enriching both the educational and cultural experiences of our students. Led by Khun Jit, our school licensee, and Kru Dia, Deputy School Director, the team includes Kru Tee and Kru Way, who specialise in Thai First Language instruction, alongside Kru Amy and Kru Saimai, who teach Thai as a Foreign Language. Their efforts go far beyond academic success, contributing to the school’s cultural vibrancy through events like Wai Kru (Teacher Appreciation), Loy Krathong, and Songkran. Through initiatives such as the Saturday Thai Culture Club, they foster a deep appreciation for Thai traditions, allowing our diverse, international community to connect with and celebrate the rich heritage of Thailand. Their work not only strengthens ties between students and Thai culture but also helps build a harmonious and culturally aware environment within the school.

PE & Sports News

HeadStart Students Go “Cross Country” at BISP

Huge congratulations to all our students who took part in the PISAC cross country event this week. We had a whopping 85 runners representing HeadStart! The races were very competitive and hard fought; special mentions go to Maya (Y8 at City campus) who finished 3rd in the U13 Girls race and Jia (Y4 at City campus) who, after a dramatic sprint finish, finished 1st in the U9 Girls race! Collectively as a school, combining the results from Primary and Secondary, HeadStart placed 3rd overall. What an impressive event! The PE department is already looking forward to next year for even more runners to take part. Ms Carter – Head of PE

Friendly Football Action for the Cherngtalay Panthers

This week, all of the HeadStart Cherngtalay Panthers Football Academy teams were in action, playing friendly games in preparation for their upcoming tournaments.

The U11 and U13 Boys teams welcomed Bangjo Academy. Both teams showed how well they have progressed since the start of the year, looking well-organised and playing excellent football. Meanwhile, our U13 Girls and U9 Boys were next to take to the pitch when they welcomed Srisoonthorn Academy. Once again, they showcased how much they have improved since the start of the year, creating plenty of goal-scoring opportunities and working together effectively in defence.

Selected players from the HeadStart Cherngtalay Panthers teams will be taking part in the PISAC tournament next Saturday, 9th November, and the U11 Boys will compete at the BISP Soccer 7’s tournament later in the month. We are looking forward to a football-packed November, and we welcome all the support we can get from the HeadStart community. Coach Paul – Football Coach

Languages Department

Russian Language Day

On October 26, HeadStart International School held the Day of the Russian Language. This event brought together children and parents from our HeadStart Chaofah and Cherngtalay campuses, creating a warm atmosphere of unity and creativity. The program featured wonderful creative performances: ballet, songs, dances, and much more. There were also some delightful surprises for the audience! The children participated in a workshop where they created colorful crafts with their parents. The event concluded with a food fair, where everyone could sample famous national dishes and share them. We thank all the participants for their active involvement and support. We look forward to seeing you again at our events!

It was great to see families, children, and staff dressed up and fully enjoying the Halloween-themed activities. HeadStart Eco School

HeadStart Eco School Term 1.5 Focus – Climate. SDG13 – Climate Action

Eco Committees

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, impacting nearly every aspect of our lives. Rising temperatures lead to more extreme heatwaves, droughts, and unpredictable weather patterns, which not only threaten ecosystems but also disrupt food production and water supply. Around the world, nations are stepping up efforts to reduce carbon emissions investing in renewable energy like solar and wind power, promoting reforestation projects to absorb atmospheric carbon, and encouraging sustainable practices in industries to limit environmental harm.

In Thailand, the effects of climate change are particularly evident. The agricultural sector, which is the backbone of the country, faces significant disruptions from changing rainfall patterns and increased frequency of floods and droughts. This instability threatens the livelihoods of millions of farmers. Coastal regions, including popular tourist destinations, are vulnerable to rising sea levels and severe storms, which could lead to loss of land, damage to infrastructure, and a decline in tourism revenue. As these threats continue to grow, it is crucial for all citizens to contribute to sustainability efforts whether through reducing plastic consumption, conserving energy, or supporting community led environmental initiatives such as our beach cleaning initiative. By making conscious choices in our daily lives, we can collectively mitigate the impacts of climate change and work towards a more resilient future for Thailand.

At HeadStart International School, we are committed to making meaningful contributions to the fight against climate change, not only through small actions but by implementing impactful sustainability projects. Alex (Yucheng Qiang) – Senior Prefect for Eco

Community Beach Clean

We invite HeadStart Cherngtalay families to head ‘down south’ and join us this Sunday at Kata beach (9:30 am @ Surf House Kata). Bring with you water, suncream, a hat and reusable gloves if you want to wear them. We will provide collection bags and of course House Points for every participant. So come join us for a fun and rewarding community event where we give back to our local community.

At the last Beach Clean event in Rawai, we had over 60 people in attendance. The winning House were the Green Dragons who were best represented. We collected roughly 35 kg or beach rubbish!

Sustainable Halloween

With Halloween sort of behind us, what will you do with those decorations and costumes? What are the possible environmental impacts of these one off decorations? We can look to reduce waste by storing and reusing the decorations next year (Pumpkins never go out of fashion) and save those costumes. With your costumes either:

  • 1: Keep them for next year

  • 2: Donate them to the school for dress up in Primary (email [email protected] if you want to do this)

  • 3: Take them to the Uniqlo textile recycling box in Central

Fast Fashion such as plastic (polyester) costumes have a huge impact on the environment at every stage of the production process. So when making your Halloween choices consider the hidden Horrors of a plastic heavy Halloween.

COP 29

COP29 (29th Conference of the Parties) begins on Nov 11th, 2024 until Nov 22nd. This is the annual meeting of world leaders; political, religious and environmental. This year’s event aims to look at a broad range of topics and to measure progress towards the goals of previous meetings. A key focus this year will be Climate Action. Communities, including schools, around the world have an opportunity to contribute to the COP29 event or undertake activities inspired by the event. Our Upper Secondary Eco Committee will run several Friday Lunch activities around the themes of COP29 as part of their ChangeMaker Fridays.

Join the Fight Against Plastic Pollution! Please Take Our Quick Anonymous Survey!

Hi HeadStart Community!

We need YOUR voice in an exciting international environmental research project that assists scientists in exploring the impacts of combined pollution on the beautiful oceans of Southeast Asia, specifically the Phuket Region.

  • Why does this matter?

While plastic waste is visible and concerning, hidden dangers from some other chemicals found in sunscreen can exacerbate the damage to marine life.

  • Your Contribution is Vital!

We invite you to participate in our anonymous online survey. Your input will help us identify trends in the usage habits of both plastics and sunscreens to optimise our future experimental design, and raise awareness about marine conservation where needed. Plus, you can skip any questions that make you uncomfortable—no pressure!

  • Participate Now and Make a Difference!

Click the link below to access the survey and help us protect our oceans!

https://app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/stirling/sunscreen-protection-and-single-use-plastic-consumption-in-th-1

Thank you for your enthusiasm and commitment to help scientists help our oceans!

Did You Know? Climate is not just about longer dry seasons and more intense wet seasons here on Phuket but also about the quality of our air. Last year air quality on Phuket on a number of occasions was measured to be more toxic and potentially harmful than that of Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Early interventions by car drivers here on Phuket and especially those driving to drop off and pick up at HeadStart campuses and help reduce the frequency of harmful days.
Something To Think About As well as Uniqlo (Central Mall) collecting unwanted clothes and fabrics the Ozo Resort in Kata also provides clothes collection – look out for the collection box in their reception. BUT if you’d rather donate to charity (repurpose) than recycle, hold on to those clothes for one of our upcoming clothing collections in aid of HeadStart charities such as Phuket Sunshine Village.

Request Don’t forget to keep collecting those thin plastic bags, wrappers, crisp bags or plastic food wrappers please collect these at home, perhaps in a plastic bag. In the coming weeks we will be asking for donations of such material to help with our monthly Eco Brick Challenge. Better still make your own Eco Brick at home.

Parent Fitness Information

HeadStart provides complimentary use of the Fitness Gym for parents every weekday morning from 07:30-09:30 and in the afternoon from 14:30-18:00. The gym is available strictly for the HeadStart parents and is not open for members of the public unless specifically organised as part of an event.

Parents are asked to vacate all facilities (including the changing rooms in the Fitness Gym) by 9:30am as students may need to use the facilities for their lessons. The gym and the fitness studio is reserved for our students during all other hours of the school day as part of their P.E curriculum.

Classes are run by our fully qualified fitness instructors between 8:00-9:00am. To join, simply sign the list at the entrance of the gym or speak to one of the trainers.
