Key Stage 3 Programme (Ages 11-14)

The Key Stage 3 programme in Years 7 to 9 provides a broad, balanced, and stimulating foundation that bridges the transition from Primary education to the more specialised study required in Key Stage 4.

Students are introduced to a wider range of subjects taught by specialist teachers in dedicated facilities, including fully equipped science laboratories, art studios, and computing suites. The curriculum is designed to foster independent thinking, intellectual curiosity, and robust study habits. During these years, we focus not only on academic knowledge but also on the development of critical skills such as problem-solving, collaboration, and effective communication, ensuring students are confident and well-prepared to make their IGCSE and BTEC subject choices by the end of Year 9.

Core Subjects in Key Stage 3

Key Stage 4 Programme: IGCSE & BTEC Level 2

The Key Stage 4 curriculum offers a tailored educational journey where students select elective subjects alongside core mandates. This pivotal phase is anchored by three robust, globally recognised pathways: the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education), the GCSE, and the BTEC Level 2.

While the IGCSEs and GCSEs provide a traditional, examination-based academic route, BTEC Level 2 courses offer a highly viable, practical, coursework-driven alternative. These qualifications provide a broad programme of study across languages, humanities, sciences, mathematics, and vocational subjects. In each subject, there is a balance between practical and theoretical knowledge, accommodating students of different abilities and learning styles.

Students usually sit examinations or submit their final BTEC portfolios at the end of Year 11. These qualifications prepare students for the rigorous academic and vocational courses followed in the Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13).

Subjects Offered in Key Stage 4

As a fully licensed and accredited Cambridge and Pearson centre, any Cambridge IGCSE examinations and/or Edexcel GCSE/IGCSE can be sat here at HeadStart, including subjects that are not offered as part of our core curriculum.

Key Stage 5 Programme: AS / A Level & BTEC Level 3

In the Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13), students narrow their focus to prepare for university and their future careers. HeadStart offers a dual pathway model allowing students to select academic A Levels, vocational BTECs, or a combination of both to best suit their learning styles and aspirations.

The A Level Pathway

Advanced Level qualifications (A Levels) are highly specialised, subject-based qualifications that form the traditional route into UK and global universities. Usually taken across two years, students typically select up to 4 AS Level (Advanced Subsidiary) subjects in Year 12, before narrowing their choices down to 3 subjects in Year 13 to complete the full A Level.

The BTEC Pathway

A BTEC (Business and Technology Education Council) is a practical-based qualification that provides hands-on experience and serves as a coursework-driven alternative to the examination-heavy A Level route. Assignments respond to real-life workplace scenarios, such as vlogs, podcasts, reports, and presentations, allowing students to build a comprehensive portfolio of work.

BTECs are widely used for university entry in the UK (with approximately 25% of students holding at least one BTEC) and are also accepted at universities in the USA, Canada, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand. Depending on a student's chosen intensity, BTECs are offered at different equivalencies:

• Subsidiary Diploma: Equivalent to 1 A Level
• Diploma: Equivalent to 2 A Levels
• Extended Diploma: Equivalent to 3 A Levels
