Key Stage 3 Programme

The Key Stage 3 programme is designed for students aged 11 to 14 years old (Years 7 to 9). Serving as a vital bridge between Primary education and the rigorous IGCSEs in Key Stage 4, it provides a broad and balanced foundation. During Key Stage 3, students study a broad spectrum of subjects. Unlike later years where students begin to specialise, this phase is designed for exploration. It exposes students to a wide variety of disciplines, allowing them to discover their academic passions, strengths, and interests before making their critical IGCSE subject choices in Year 9.

The curriculum is just one element in the education of every child. There is time and space in the school day, week, and term to range beyond the curriculum specifications. The curriculum provides an outline of core knowledge around which teachers develop exciting and stimulating lessons to promote the development of pupils’ knowledge, understanding, and skills.

Key Stage 4 Programme: GCSE and IGCSE

The Secondary school curriculum is anchored by the GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) and the IGCSE (International). The IGCSE is the world’s most popular international qualification for 14 to 16-year-olds (Years 10 and 11) based upon the National Curriculum of England. This is a pivotal phase where students begin to tailor their educational journey. While core subjects like English, Maths, and Science remain mandatory, students now select a range of elective subjects to study in depth, culminating in globally recognised external examinations.

These qualifications provide a broad programme of study across languages, social studies, science, mathematics, and vocational subjects. In each subject, there is a balance between practical and theoretical knowledge, with an emphasis on skills related to that specific area. The curriculum allows students to use examples related to their own experiences and residence. The nature of the programme accommodates students of different abilities and is also designed for students whose first language may not be English.

Students sit examinations at the end of the course, usually in Year 11. These examinations are marked by experienced external examiners appointed by CIE (Cambridge International Examinations) or Pearson. The programme prepares students for the rigorous academic courses followed in Years 12 and 13.

Key Stage 5 Programme: AS, A-Level and BTEC

The Sixth Form (KS5) curriculum offers students the opportunity to tailor their educational pathway to their specific career and university aspirations. Students can choose to pursue traditional AS and A-Levels, opt for practical BTEC qualifications, or undertake a blended combination of both.

The AS and A-Level Pathway

The A-Level (Advanced Level) programme provides rigorous, specialised study for 16 to 18-year-olds. Unlike some global educational frameworks where students continue studying a broad, general range of subjects until age 18, the British Sixth Form is celebrated for its deep specialisation. Students narrow their focus to three or four subjects they are truly passionate about, allowing for a level of academic depth and rigorous research that directly mirrors the demands of top-tier universities.

The BTEC Pathway

A BTEC (Business and Technology Education Council) is a practical-based qualification that provides hands-on experience and serves as a highly viable, coursework-driven alternative to the traditional examination-heavy route.

Learners study core units to build foundational industry understanding, followed by optional units to focus on particular interests. Assignments respond to real-life workplace scenarios—such as vlogs, podcasts, reports, and presentations—allowing students to build a comprehensive portfolio of work to showcase at university or job interviews. BTECs focus on developing vital research, communication, collaboration, and independent working skills.

BTEC empowers young people through hands-on experience. There are no external examinations; the courses are entirely assignment-based. They offer flexibility (you can combine A-Levels and BTECs) and allow progression to university options that might have otherwise been unachievable for students who struggle with high-stakes final exams.
