HeadStart Aqua Panthers Academy Swimmers at Aqua Panthers Invitational (API)
Good luck to all our Aqua Panthers Academy Swimmers who are taking part in this weekend’s API event. A whole host of swimming races take place across 2 days - Saturday 30th November and Sunday 1st December - at our Cherngtalay Campus. All ECAs and Academies Finish on Wednesday 4th December
This is a polite reminder that the last day for all ECAs and Academy team training this term is Wednesday 4th December. From Friday 6th December until the end of term, all students will finish classes at 3:20pm (3pm on Friday).
Please also look out for communications from our ECA Team starting from Monday 2nd December regarding ECA lists for Terms 2 and 3 as well as EAL and Booster requirements and enrollment in VAP programs.
The booking process for Term 2 and 3 ECAs will then begin on Friday 3rd January, starting with Foundation students on both campuses. Look out for email communications from our ECA team informing you of booking dates and times for all sections of the school.
Thursday 5th December - School Closed for Father’s Day
Please be reminded that on Thursday 5th December school will be closed for Father’s Day celebrations. We will open again as usual on Friday 6th December.
Outstanding Learner Awards
On Tuesday 26th November, 4 of HeadStart’s 6 Outstanding Learner Award winners for 2024 travelled up to Bangkok to join the Cambridge Outstanding Learner Awards Ceremony. Accompanied by Dr. Parimon Phaisamran (School Licensee), Mr Lukats (Secondary Principal) and Mr Davidson (Head of Upper Secondary School), as well as proud family members, our award winners displayed their true qualities as they joined exceptional students from across the region to celebrate their achievements.
Ahead of the trip, we spoke with each of them to find out how HeadStart inspires them to excellence. This week, we hear from Conor and Daniel:
Conor Bowens Focuses on Passion for Learning and Giving Back
“I have intellectual goals and philanthropic goals,” Conor said, explaining that his passion for natural sciences fuels his dream of studying Physics at a prestigious university. “I’m really fascinated by the subject, and I hope that will lead me to study Physics at a top university. That’s the dream right now.”
Conor’s intellectual pursuits are driven not just by a desire for academic success but by a deep curiosity about the world. “I enjoy studying for the subjects I’m doing—Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Maths at A Level—and I’m looking at doing Further Maths independently,” he added, reflecting on how his academic journey has evolved. He noted that in his earlier years, he spent a lot of time studying inefficiently, but now that he is focused on subjects he excels at, his approach has become more efficient and fulfilling.
Beyond his academic ambitions, Conor is committed to making a positive impact on society. “Throughout my life, I hope to alleviate suffering and make the world a better place,” he said. He also expressed a strong desire to address educational disparities, noting his involvement in a project aimed at promoting education, which he plans to expand over the next two years.
Reflecting on his educational journey, Conor credits his parents for instilling in him a strong sense of responsibility and self-motivation. “They’ve given me a safe family and a great community, and I need to take these opportunities as a way of saying thank you to them,” he said.
Conor also shared how his experience at HeadStart has shaped his approach to learning and his belief in self-driven excellence. “At HeadStart, we study the subject for the subject, with passionate teachers, and I thrived a lot more,” he said, recalling his transition from Singapore’s test-focused education system. He explained that, unlike in Singapore, where academic success was measured by grades and prestige, HeadStart emphasises a love of learning. “When it comes to being top in Thailand, you’re not shooting for an A* to get to the 90% threshold. You’re really going for perfection,” he added, “and you’re the only person who can drive yourself to that.”
Teachers at HeadStart, particularly in the sciences, have played a crucial role in nurturing Conor’s intellectual curiosity. “Miss Bekker has enthusiasm—she’s bubbly, loud, and excited to teach Maths. That passion is contagious,” he said, highlighting how a teacher’s energy can enhance the learning experience. He also praised HeadStart’s focus on going beyond the curriculum, with teachers offering additional resources and opportunities to deepen students’ understanding. “Mrs. Marsh always adds footnotes or links to research, and Dr. Marsh gave us access to thousands of articles,” he explained, noting that this encourages students to pursue knowledge for its own sake, not just for grades.
With a strong support system from both peers and teachers, Conor believes HeadStart has given him the foundation needed to reach his ambitious goals. “You need a good team to fall back on,” he concluded, “and that is HeadStart.”
Daniel Achieves Perfect Maths Score, Credits Family and Teachers for Success
“Over two higher-level maths papers, you didn’t get a single question wrong; you got 100% in IGCSE maths,” his teacher proudly noted. Daniel explained that his parents played a key role in his academic journey. “I’d like to thank my parents for encouraging me to achieve this result,” he said. “They didn’t put a lot of pressure on me but encouraged me to always do my best and work to my maximum capacity.”
While his family emphasised effort over perfection, his passion for learning was also nurtured by his teachers at HeadStart. “In maths class, there isn’t really a lot of pressure, so we aren’t pushed to get that level,” he said, explaining how the supportive, low-pressure environment allowed him to thrive. He contrasted this with his previous experience at a public school in Beijing, where he struggled with motivation. “I found classes boring, and I didn’t have the passion for studying,” he admitted. “But now, at HeadStart, with teachers who are generous and motivating, I’ve found my passion for maths.”
Daniel, who is also studying Physics, Chemistry, and Computer Science at A Level, emphasised the importance of a dynamic learning environment. “It’s about the learning environment,” he said, noting that HeadStart’s emphasis on super-curricular activities—such as the British Mathematical Olympiad and a hands-on Physics project building a trebuchet—adds a fun, competitive edge to his studies.
For Daniel, the combination of family support, passionate teachers, and a stimulating academic environment has been key to his success. “I get motivated by doing it right and proving to myself I can achieve great things; and the reason I have that passion is because of the teachers,” he concluded.
CAPA Production of 'EVITA'
As the curtains closed on CAPA Senior’s production of Evita last night, there was immense pride in seeing such talented young people bring the vibrant, complex world of Evita Perón to life with such passion and skill. From soaring highs to gritty realism, the students’ singing, acting, dancing and instrumental performances were nothing short of breathtaking. We all had high expectations but they far exceeded these, pouring their hearts and souls into every performance. Their passion, talent, commitment and professionalism have been a genuine joy to behold. Huge congratulations to everyone involved and especially to the main character actors Prim, Pan, Guy, Enzo and Ingfah.
The production was the result of the collective effort of an exceptionally dedicated team of creatives, the CAPA team, whose primary aim is to inspire and nurture our students to shine bright, which they did brilliantly! My very special thanks go to Ms. Tunstall, Mr Graham and Coach Mina for their incredible creativity, direction, guidance and support of the students. I am full of pride and gratitude.
As we say goodbye to Evita and CAPA Senior for this year, we will fondly remember the amazing journey we’ve had and the friendships developed, all through the power of theatre to inspire, challenge and unite. We shall look forward to sharing more photos with you soon, but for now, thank you to all those who came to support, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Parent meeting: Mock Exams IGCSE and Onward Plans on 3rd December
We invite all parents of Year 11 students to join us for our latest parent meeting when our Secondary academic team will talk you through your child’s upcoming mock exams, how to support them to prepare for their IGCSE exams and making onwards plans after Year 11. It will also be a great opportunity to meet other parents and members of our community. Our Thai, Russian and Mandarin speaking admin teams will be on hand to provide translation services. Parent Meeting: Raising Future Innovators and Essential Cybersecurity & IT Skills
We welcome all parents with an interest in preparing their child for a future in technology to a presentation given by our partners from KIBERone. This will also give you an opportunity to learn how KIBERone’s programs help develop students’ IT skills and find out more about the different programs on offer through our ECAs. Phuket Sunshine Village Fundraiser
Sincere thanks to our entire school community who just keep on giving! Huge congratulations to the students of Year 1 and Year 2 for completing their sponsored activity (see update below), and to Year 7 Blue and Year 7 Yellow homerooms for reaching their 5,000 baht target to sponsor a PSV child. Special mention to the Boonwattanopas family (Ray in Year 2 Blue & Serene in Year 5 White) for their generous contributions and to Phoenix-Alara who received a kindness award in today’s Foundation assembly for an inspiring act of generosity. Instead of asking for presents for her birthday, she requested friends and family to make a donation towards our Phuket Sunshine Village Fundraiser. We congratulate Phoenix-Alara in choosing to celebrate her special day by contributing to a cause that will have a lasting impact!
Year 1 and Year 2 Run to Phuket Sunshine Village…And Back Again!
The students of Year 1 and 2 joined forces to complete a sponsored obstacle course to raise money for Phuket Sunshine Village. The catch? As a group, they had to travel the equivalent distance from HeadStart School to Phuket Sunshine Village…and back again! The children completed a variety of activities in order to hop, skip and jump the distance: they jumped over hurdles, bounced on space hoppers, hopped through ladders and ran down the track. The children were so enthusiastic about the event and thoroughly enjoyed taking part and raising money. A big well done to all the children who took part and a big thank you to everyone at home for sponsoring the children and helping us raise money for Phuket Sunshine Village. Our Year 1 students managed to raise an incredible 16,830 baht from their efforts while Year 2 managed a total of 23,785 baht! Great work Years 1 and 2!

Ladda Klimsch (aka Newle) - First HeadStart Alumna to Join Staff
I joined HeadStart as a student in Year 6 way back in 2012 and I can still vividly remember my first day! From that moment, I knew I was in the right place. Over the years, I developed a deep appreciation for the school, and it became more than just an institution — it became a community where I made lasting friendships and valuable connections.
HeadStart has always struck a perfect balance between academics and extracurricular activities. As a school that places a strong emphasis on academic excellence, it also encourages students to explore their interests through sports, festivals, and a wide range of activities. This blend of rigorous academics and a vibrant school life made every day exciting and something to look forward to.
Although I wasn’t the top student, I quickly realised the profound impact HeadStart had on me when I entered university. The academic foundation I received, particularly in writing and critical thinking, was invaluable. I felt confident and well-prepared to tackle university-level challenges, and I attribute much of my success to the education I received at HeadStart.
Now, as the first ever HeadStart student to join the school staff - as a member of the HeadStart Marketing & Communications team - I am privileged to see the school’s growth firsthand. In my role, I coordinate a variety of school events, each one offering something new and exciting every day. This position allows me to tap into my creativity, and I feel incredibly confident working alongside such a talented and supportive team. It’s been inspiring to witness how far the school has come, and having the opportunity to work behind the scenes has only deepened my respect for the institution. I’m fortunate to be part of such a professional, dynamic, and international working environment. Every day, I continue to learn and grow, both personally and professionally.
Looking back, I can honestly say that being a student at HeadStart gave me a true “head start” in life. I’m incredibly proud to be part of this wonderful community again, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the school’s continued success.

On Monday 9th December, the Yellow Cheetahs will receive their Term 1 House prize. Students from Year 1 to Year4 will gather together in the Sports Hall to watch a movie before having a pizza party! Meanwhile, Years 5 to 13 will be visiting Central, to watch the wonderful new movie, Moana 2! They will then enjoy a delicious lunch - with Years 5 and 6 heading to Sizzler and Year 7 to Year 13 getting their pizza on at Pizza Company - and be back at school in time for their afternoon lessons. Congratulations to the Yellow Cheetahs on their Term 1 victory! As mentioned at Monday Flag-raising - the House points are now reset and all students can start earning towards the End of Year House Prize! May the best House win…

Soccer 7s Success!
Last weekend saw 8 of our HeadStart Panthers Football Academy teams competing at the BISP Soccer 7’s - one of the biggest International school football tournaments in Asia, welcoming teams from across the globe.
Our teams have always competed well at this annual event and our players arrived with lots of energy, motivation and the excitement of being challenged against new teams. The tournament certainly didn’t disappoint and we were again delighted with how well our teams represented the HeadStart Panthers Football Academy. Not only did we witness several teams leading the pack in their respective age groups but we also saw great resilience in the tougher games with amazing effort and teamwork.
Our U11 Girls team were the superstars at the tournament as they were crowned U11 Girls Champions of the BISP Soccer 7’s tournament after dominating over both days of competition!
Our U13 Girls also performed amazingly well, finishing in 3rd place in the top Cup competition. This was a great reflection of their hard work and togetherness as a team.
After a number of successes on Day 1, our O15 Girls and O15 Boys teams both made it the top Cup competition but were unfortunate in the quarter final stages to miss out on progression. Meanwhile, the U15 Boys went on to win the Bowl competition with a dominate performance in the final. Our younger U11 Boys teams from both campuses worked tirelessly over the two days and we are very proud of the resilience they showed.
Overall it was a fantastic tournament for the HeadStart Panthers Football Academy and we would like to say a massive well done to all the players and an even bigger thank you to all the parents who came out the support the teams and players!

O15 Boys Battle BCIS!
On 26th November, the Over-15 Boys Basketball Team from HeadStart Chaofah City traveled to BCIS for an exciting game. From the opening whistle, our players demonstrated exceptional teamwork, strategy, and determination, resulting in a decisive victory for the Pantherst. While the score was heavily in our favor, the match was about more than just the numbers. Both teams seized the opportunity to gain valuable experience, experiment with new strategies, and develop their skills in a competitive yet supportive atmosphere.

Trying Traditional Desserts in Thai Foreign Language Class
In Year 3 Thai Foreign Language class, students enjoyed a “Try Thai Desserts” activity where they started off with a fun introduction to the names and basic recipes of traditional colorful varieties of Thai desserts. Then, after an interactive quiz, the highlight of the day came when they had the opportunity to sample two iconic Thai desserts: ‘Kanom Chan’, a layered jelly dessert, and ‘Woon Maprao’, a refreshing coconut jelly dessert. We’re thrilled to celebrate Nattcha’s amazing achievement in the DELF Junior exam! Just before the start of Term 1, Nattcha successfully completed the A2 level, scoring an impressive 82.5/100!

Celebrating Russian Mother’s Day in Primary Russian Lessons
24th November was Mother’s Day. In connection with this, we discussed with the students from Y1 to Y4 how to congratulate their mothers, wrote greeting cards, and decorated them by hand. It’s never too late to say kind words to our mothers, and this can be done not only on holidays. We hope that such greetings will bring you lots of joy and smiles! The Russian Language Team

Reception Spend Time in the Growing Garden
Our Eco Committee would like to share some further information, and pictures, relating to our work with our Reception classes, introducing students to the Growing Gardens. Every other Tuesday, students will now attend workshops in the garden as part of their Continuous Provision (2:30-3:00pm). This is an opportunity for our youngest students to learn from and in nature - to find out about the creatures we find and need in the garden, the plants we have and what we can do with them, and how we can make soil from waste vegetables - urgh…worm poo! Students have been given a pictorial worksheet, translated into English, Thai, Chinese and Russian, to record their observations, observe change in the garden and collect words and smells to help them describe the garden. The aim of these sessions is to make students aware of nature and through this care a little more about and for it. Mr Gratton - Eco Coordinator
Reception Students and Parents Starstruck by Reception Yellow’s Stellar Performance!
Last week, Reception Yellow dazzled everyone with a spectacular assembly all about the planets! The children took the stage in vibrant, colorful costumes, each representing a planet in our solar system. Designing Games for Younger Gamers in Year 12 BTEC IT Lessons
Over the last term, our Year 12 BTEC IT students have been working hard designing, creating and testing their own games in various different gaming engines, such as Gamemaker, Construct and Scratch. Part of the requirement was to make them suitable for students aged between 8 and 12, so this week a specially selected group of Primary gamers was invited to play and test the BTEC students’ games, giving some very honest feedback:

Ivan in Year 6 Yellow said, “They’re pretty good, they are very creative. I would like to be a game-maker myself so I have tried and I know how hard they are to make, but these are really fun.”

Sixth Form Students Introduced to Culinary Courses from Le Cordon Bleu, Bangkok
On Tuesday 26th November, our Sixth Form students received a visit from Ms Weerinnat Suwanachuen (Khun Pook) from Le Cordon Bleu in Bangkok. Students were informed about the range of courses offered, such as courses in patisserie, cuisine, boulangerie, nutrition, plant-based culinary arts and hospitality. Information was provided on the different diplomas offered as well as the details of the syllabi across 35 campuses in 20 countries worldwide and the requirements to be accepted at each. This short talk was extremely informative as Khun Pook gave us an insight into the courses and the way of learning in each country along with the tuition fees and recommendations for specific learning styles for students at each campus. Having started baking with my family at a very young age, the opportunity to study a selection of courses with state of the art equipment and ingredients sounded like a dream (and probably my mum’s dream too!). Although I may not be able to follow through completely with this passion, I hope to work in a field with a food aspect or even take a gap year to work in culinary hospitality. Mali - Year 12 student
Real-life Movie Producers to Assess BTEC Business Movie Pitches
The BTEC Team are excited to announce that our BTEC Business students will be holding an exhibition showcasing movie pitches they have been planning as part of their assessment, taking place on Thursday 12th December from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM in the Secondary Hall.
In collaboration with 5 Star Marine, we have invited real-life movie producers to assess the students’ pitches, offering them a unique opportunity to gain professional insights.

Climate Action: An Article by Alex (Year 13)
The journey towards sustainability begins with small but meaningful steps. The Eco-Committee recently launched an initiative aimed at engaging our community in climate action: a pledge wall. This thought provoking installation features post-it notes, each representing a different perspective on countering climate challenges. Students, teachers, and staff were invited to share their ideas and commitments to reducing negative environmental impacts. From promises to reduce the use of air-conditioning and to calls for increased greenery within our campus, the wall is a collective designation of our determination to make a difference.
To add depth to this initiative, we conducted interviews with members of our school community. These interviews revealed a range of insights, including working with local businesses to further sustainability goals, fusing sustainability based topics in lessons such as PSHE and encouraging eco-friendly habits.
Beyond the pledge wall, our commitment to sustainability took center stage at the Phuket Green League gathering, held at UWC Thailand in collaboration with Plastic Free Phuket. This event is a hub for schools and organisations across Phuket to come together and exchange ideas, share progress, and strengthen partnerships for sustainability. Our committee was proud to be represented, joining forces with other institutions to drive change. The gathering highlighted key themes such as aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and forming meaningful collaborations to combat pressing environmental issues.
At the event, we had the opportunity to share our journey, including our efforts with our beach clean and other eco-initiatives. We also learned in discussions on achieving the SDGs with other schools and institutions sharing strategies to reduce plastic waste, and crafting a collective “Beach Oath” to preserve Phuket’s coastline. This collaboration emphasised the importance of uniting local actions to create global impact.
- Did You Know: Not only is Phuket struggling to find the space to deal with your trash but the authorities are also switching off the incinerator for up to 2 months - where will your trash go? So it is now more important than ever to minimise waste, recycle what you can and be mindful when accepting that which might end up in landfill; and our seas.

Congratulations to Chris (Year 5 White) for receiving the 1st Prize Gold Award Audition Thailand and for making it to the Platinum Award Final round at the Singapore International Music And Talent Competition.
Congratulations to Paul (Year 4 Blue) for being crowned Champion and receiving the Gold Award for the Factorial Math Competition International Round (South East Asia) Grade 2. Paul came top in the South East Asia Region where he competed against students from countries including Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines!

HeadStart provides complimentary use of the Fitness Gym for parents every weekday morning from 07:30-09:30 and in the afternoon from 14:30-18:00.
Classes run from 8:00-9:00am. To join, sign the list at the gym entrance or speak to a trainer. Available strictly for HeadStart parents only.
