Southern Thailand Flood Disaster Appeal

Dear HeadStart Community,

With a large number of people urgently in need of assistance, HeadStart will be organising a donation booth to support the many provinces in southern Thailand, particularly Hat Yai District in Songkhla Province, that are currently facing a severe flooding crisis.

If you wish to contribute to the flood relief efforts, you may prepare donations as follows:

• Dry food (canned food / instant noodles / ready-to-eat meals)

• Clothing (in good condition)

• Personal care items (baby diapers / sanitary pads / adult diapers / cleaning supplies)

• Pet food (dog food / cat food)

• Drinking water

We sincerely hope that our community can contribute even in a small way to helping those affected by this disaster, and we wish for all those impacted to overcome this crisis as quickly as possible.

Last Day of All ECAs and Academies – Wednesday 3rd December

Please be informed that all Term 1 ECAs (HeadStart ECAs, Fee Paid Programmes, CAPA & Academies) finish on Wednesday 3rd December. From Thursday 4th December until the end of term, school will end at 15:20 for all students.

Aqua Panthers Invitational (API) Swim Meet 2025

Get ready for HeadStart’s largest sporting event of the year! We’re excited to announce the 4th Annual Aqua Panthers Invitational (API) is just around the corner! Once again this year, we’re diving into history as we host over 250 swimmers from across Asia in the 50-metre pool at our Cherngtalay campus!

This will be HeadStart’s biggest swim meet yet and the largest sporting event we’ve ever hosted! Eco School Beach Clean at Nai Harn Beach

We invite all families to join this month’s HeadStart Community Beach Clean at Nai Harn Beach. We will be meeting this Sunday, 30 November, at the Sea Breeze Cafe at 9:30am. This is a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community, enjoy the outdoors, and take meaningful action to keep our local environment clean.

To add a splash of colour and competition to the event, please remember to wear your House shirt! Let’s see which House can mobilise the most volunteers to support our island home.

Foundation Christmas Stay & Play 2025

We invite Foundation children and their parents to join our festive Christmas celebrations starting with our Foundation Christmas Stay & Play events. We encourage everyone to dress festively for the occasion and (keep it a secret!) not to forget to pay a visit to Santa Claus! Taking place in our Foundation classrooms and the ILC as follows:

Give Blood, Give Life: Thai Red Cross Visit

On Monday, 15th December 2025, the Thai Red Cross Society will be setting up a donation station at the Chaofah City Campus from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

We are calling on the HeadStart community to support this vital cause. Please note that we need a minimum number of confirmed registrations to ensure this activity can go ahead, so your early commitment is essential.

Mandarin Speaking Parents Meeting

On 25th November 2025, we successfully held the Mandarin First Language Parents’ Meeting. The meeting provided a platform to discuss students’ school life, explore cultural differences across diverse backgrounds, and share ways for parents to effectively support their children’s Mandarin learning at home. Parents also received guidance on school event information, the academic assessment system, and the wide range of extracurricular activities. Through this meeting, parents gained a deeper understanding of the school’s operations, educational philosophy, and home-school communication, laying a solid foundation for collaborative support of their children’s growth.

UPrep Talk: Applying to Universities in the UK and Europe

This week’s UPrep Talk brought a real buzz to the Secondary Hall as parents gathered to explore what it really takes to apply to universities across the UK and Europe. We unpacked the different systems, timelines, and requirements — but the true highlights were our two fantastic guest speakers, who brought the topic to life with real-world insight.

Mr. Bayer, father of Kai Yi (now at university in Germany), shared his family’s journey into ‘one of higher education’s best-kept secrets’ — Germany’s excellent, low-cost university options. His practical tips and honest reflections gave parents a clearer picture of what studying on the continent can offer.

We also welcomed Reece Edouard, a proud HeadStart alumnus who went on to study in the UK. Reece spoke thoughtfully and warmly about how parents can help their children prepare for the big transition — from navigating academic expectations to adapting to a different culture — and offered calm, clear and advice on supporting students to become confident and independent abroad.

Thank you to all who attended and contributed to such an engaging session. Our UPrep Talks continue to grow in energy and community spirit, and we’re excited to see you at the next one!

Parent meeting: Mock Exams IGCSE and Onward Plans on 2nd December

We invite all parents of Year 11 students to join us for our latest parent meeting when our Secondary academic team will talk you through your child’s upcoming mock exams, how to support them to prepare for their IGCSE exams and making onwards plans after Year 11. Celebrating HeadStart’s Cambridge Outstanding Learners

HeadStart is proud to celebrate the incredible achievements of our Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards winners, recognising our students who earned the highest marks in their respective subjects across Thailand and the world!

Huge congratulations to Melissa (10 White) who was recognised as Top in the World for IGCSE Foreign Language Mandarin Chinese. Having moved to HeadStart from Hangzhou, China, in Year 9, Melissa has been impressed with her seamless transition, noting the support she receives from her teachers as well as her new friends. Her passion is for the creative arts and being part of our CAPA Senior show this year has been a great way to meet students with a similar outlook and shared interest.

A massive round of applause to Emma (11 White) for her High Achievement in IGCSE Foreign Language French. She credits our French teacher, Ms Rodts, for preparing her so meticulously for the examinations as well as the support she receives from all teachers across our Secondary school and extracurricular programmes. Emma noted that it was a unique experience to be surrounded by so many talented students, whether 14 year olds stepping up to take an IGCSE early, or recent graduates at the end of their Secondary journey looking back at their final year A-Level exams.

A Monstrous Success! Little Shop of Horrors

What a performance! We are incredibly proud of our CAPA HeadStars for their outstanding delivery of “Little Shop of Horrors” this past week. From the impressive vocals, acting, and energetic dancing to the talented production band and choir as well as the seamless stage management, the entire cast and crew showcased immense talent.

The energy in the theatre was electric, and the feedback from the audience has been overwhelming. A huge congratulations to every student involved, and a special thank you to the CAPA team who guided them to this success.

The Spirit of Giving Continues: PSV Fundraiser Week 6

The incredible generosity of our HeadStart community continues to make a real difference as we progress through our Phuket Sunshine Village (PSV) Term 1 Fundraiser. This week, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Canoon (6 Blue) and Lucas’ (2 Blue) family for their generous donation as well as the students and families of Year 1 Blue and Year 4 Blue who have successfully reached their class targets to sponsor a child at Phuket Sunshine Village.

With one week remaining of our PSV Fundraiser, we are approaching the incredible sum of 500,000 baht across both our school campuses for this worthy cause. Please remember that every donation, big or small, makes a significant impact on the lives of the children at PSV. This ongoing support is vital for providing essential items, from daily school lunches to educational supplies. We continue to warmly welcome donations at our Admin Office.

Spotlight on Kindness: Empathy Starts Early

Meet Patrick (Reception Yellow) and Jayden (Reception Blue). This week, they joined the PhuketFit and Rotary Max Phuket teams to send emergency food and water to flood victims in Hat Yai.

From stacking bottles to packing snacks, the boys showed incredible curiosity and care. We are so proud to see our Foundation students looking beyond themselves and standing alongside others when it matters most. Well done, boys!

Term 1 House Championship Results

The final results are in! After 12 weeks of fierce rivalry and exciting House competition throughout our Primary and Secondary schools, the Green Dragons have been crowned Term 1 champions!

On Monday 8th December, all students from Green House will receive their Term 1 House prize. Students from Year 1 to Year 4 will gather together in the Sports Hall to watch a movie before having a pizza party! Meanwhile, Years 5 to 13 will be visiting Central, to watch the wonderful new movie, Zootopia 2! They will then enjoy a delicious lunch – with Years 5 and 6 heading to Sizzler and Year 7 to Year 13 getting their pizza on at Pizza Company – and be back at school in time for their afternoon lessons. Congratulations to the Green Dragons on their Term 1 victory! As mentioned at Monday Flag-raising – the House points are now reset and all students can start earning towards the End of Year House Prize! May the best House win…

Our Collaborative and Dedicated Student Councils

Our Primary and Secondary Student Councils are vital forces for community engagement and school improvement. They actively collaborate on school events, combining their efforts and creative ideas to organise successful community gatherings like the annual Christmas Fair. This teamwork extends to school development, where both councils propose creative solutions and initiatives, ensuring the students’ voice is represented for the betterment of our school. Beyond the campus, our Student Councils are actively involved in a range of projects supporting essential local foundations such as Phuket Sunshine Village and North Andaman Network Foundation, demonstrating a strong commitment to service and social responsibility. This joint effort fosters leadership, teamwork, and a powerful culture of giving within the school.

Soccer 7s Success!

Last weekend saw 8 of our HeadStart Chaofah Panthers Football Academy teams competing at the BISP Soccer 7’s – one of the biggest International school football tournaments in Asia, welcoming teams from across the globe.

Our teams have always competed well at this annual event and our players arrived with lots of energy and enthusiasm not dampened by the very wet conditions throughout the weekend. The tournament certainly didn’t disappoint and we were again delighted with how well our teams represented the HeadStart Panthers Football Academy. Not only did we witness several teams leading the pack in their respective age groups but we also saw great resilience in the tougher games with amazing effort and teamwork.

Our U13 Girls team, featuring players from both Cherngtalay and Chaofah City, were the superstars of the tournament as they were crowned U13 Girls Champions of the Soccer 7s tournament after dominating the first rain-soaked day of competition, and going on to clinch a nail-biting final on penalties against St Andrews International School, Bangkok!

Meanwhile, our U15 Chaofah Boys team, featuring former Cherngtalay Academy players, also performed amazingly well, finishing in 2nd place in the top Cup competition having slugged out a muddy final with BISP on Sunday afternoon. This was a great reflection of their hard work and togetherness as a team as well as never-say-die spirit in difficult conditions!

After a number of successes on Day 1, our O15 Girls made it the top Cup competition but were unfortunate to lose on penalties in their semi-final; however, not to be deterred, they picked themselves up to win the third place playoff and finished in 3rd place in the top Cup competition.

Overall it was a fantastic tournament for the HeadStart Panthers Football Academy and we would like to say a massive well done to all the players and an even bigger thank you to all the parents who came out the support the teams and players despite the almost constant rain!

Swim Academy Tryouts for Term 2 & 3

The Swim Academy will be holding open swim tryouts for any students who are not currently part of the Swim Academy or Aqua Cubs/Pre-Panthers programs. This is a great opportunity for swimmers who would like to join our training squads for Term 2 and Term 3.

Tryout Details:

📅 Date: Wednesday, 4th December

⏰ Time: 3:30–4:00 PM (30-minute session)

📍 Location: Pool

We encourage all enthusiastic swimmers (Year 3 and up) to come and participate. Our goal is to identify developing athletes who are ready for the next stage of technical instruction, team training, and academy preparation.

Acceptance Criteria:

To ensure safety and readiness for structured training, swimmers should be able to:

• Swim 50 meters of Freestyle, Backstroke, and Breaststroke without stopping or requiring extended rest.

• Demonstrate basic dolphin kick technique (underwater or on the surface).

• Show confidence and comfort in deep water.

• Be able to listen, follow instructions, and participate in a group training setting.

This is not a high-pressure assessment, we create a positive, encouraging environment for young athletes to show their skills. Coaches will be evaluating overall water comfort, stroke fundamentals, and potential for improvement, not perfection.

Records Broken and Yellow Cheetahs Triumph at Year 6 Swim Gala

Despite a cloudy afternoon last Friday, our Year 6 swimmers lit up the pool with electric performances. The competition between houses remained incredibly close throughout the day, but the Yellow Cheetahs ultimately emerged victorious by a narrow margin. A special congratulations goes to Rita and Elisei for their outstanding individual achievements; Rita broke school records in the 25m backstroke and breaststroke, while Elisei set a new record in the 25m breaststroke.

Beyond the podium finishes, the event was defined by the supportive atmosphere created by cheering teammates, student volunteers, and families. We want to thank all the parents who attended to cheer on the swimmers. It was a fantastic way for Year 6 to complete their final primary school gala, displaying excellent sportsmanship and determination in every race.

Winter Knights Chess Tournament on Saturday 6th December

Twice a year we organize an inter-school chess tournament. This time it’s the winter edition, 2nd “Winter Knights”. Our tournament will be held on Saturday, 6th December at HeadStart Chaofah City Campus in the Sports Hall. And we invite all the chess enthusiasts from other schools as well!

Attendance checking at 08:45 and the first round just after. We’ll finish at approximately 15:30.

Registration fee in the last 2 days before the tournament will be doubled (I need to make a board reservation).

Creativity and Culture in Primary Mandarin

Our Primary students combined creativity with language learning this week. Grade 1 brought characters to life, transforming ‘sheep’ (羊) into fluffy animals with curling horns and making ‘fish’ (鱼) swim across the page in vibrant colours. This creative association helps solidify memory retention in a fun way. Meanwhile, Grade 3 explored Chinese heritage by designing traditional blue-and-white porcelain patterns, discovering the beauty and symmetry of this historic art form. It was a productive week of connecting art directly to language and history.

Exploring our Blue Planet: Year 4 Become Scientists for a Day

This week, Year 4 made waves with their science and humanities learning! As part of their ‘Blue Planet’ topic, they enjoyed an engaging visit to the Hyatt Regency Marine Biology Centre, where they observed jellyfish under microscopes and learned more about life beneath the waves. They took part in beach-cleaning activities, working collaboratively to care for the coastline, and tested seawater salinity and Ph levels as part of their science learning. Throughout the trip, the students demonstrated resilience, strong principles and excellent collaboration, making the experience both meaningful and memorable.

IELTS Examination Success!

We are delighted to commend Susanna, Federico and Ines (13 White), Jun (13 Yellow), and Oleg (13 Blue) for their outstanding commitment to the IELTS ECA Booster Class and for successfully completing their IELTS examinations with strong results. Each student has achieved and in several cases exceeded – the required band scores for their chosen universities, reflecting both their dedication and academic maturity. Their consistent attendance, disciplined work ethic, and willingness to refine their skills have set an exemplary standard for the wider student body.

The IELTS ECA Booster classes, held every Tuesday and Thursday with Mr Thomas, provide focused support in all components of the exam and are open to all students from Year 11 upwards. We warmly encourage students preparing for future university applications to take advantage of this valuable opportunity. Well done to all involved – your hard work has truly paid off!

BTEC Applied Science Explores Musculoskeletal Rehab at Bangkok Siriroj Hospital

Our BTEC Science students stepped out of the classroom for an educational visit to the Bangkok Siriroj Hospital Physiotherapy Department.

The trip offered a deep dive into sports medicine. Students learned about the mechanics of common sports injuries affecting major joints, gaining practical insights into professional treatment methods and injury prevention techniques. It was a valuable opportunity to see how theoretical coursework applies to real-world patient care. A major highlight of the visit was witnessing the intersection of technology and biology. We observed how AI technology is revolutionizing the field, playing a pivotal role in precise diagnosis and optimizing recovery plans.

Students had a great time engaging with the medical staff and exploring the facilities. The visit not only broadened our scientific understanding but also provided an inspiring glimpse into the future of healthcare and potential career paths in physiotherapy. Exploring Career Pathways and Skills with the World’s #1 Institution for Hospitality Management

Last week, our HeadStart students had the incredible opportunity to meet a guest speaker from EHL University, the world’s #1 institution for hospitality management. Students explored what the future of the hospitality industry looks like, from global career pathways to the professional skills needed to thrive in this fast growing sector.

Our BTEC learners especially benefited from understanding how their BTEC Business and Travel & Tourism qualifications align perfectly with EHL’s programmes. The speaker highlighted how the practical, real world skills developed through BTEC courses give students a strong foundation for university study in hospitality, business, luxury brand management, innovation, and service-focused careers.

HUB Bangkok 2025: Strengthening Global University Partnerships

HeadStart International School proudly participated in HUB Bangkok 2025, a productive two-day convention connecting university representatives and school counsellors across Southeast Asia. Represented by University Guidance Counsellor, Simon Thomas, the event strengthened the transition between secondary and higher education.

Organized by Campus Connect, the HUB fostered meaningful collaboration and professional growth within the global guidance community, enhancing support for students. The well-regarded 1:1 meeting approach was highly valued. Discussions covered student mindset, university rankings, and emerging study destinations, keeping conversations rooted in student needs. Focus groups were particularly beneficial, offering practical guidance on financial aid, the high school-to-university transition, and effective partnerships.

The 1-to-1 university meetings provided personalized insight into scholarships, pathways (like BTEC), budgeting, and the student experience. Our team also explored new UPrep tools. HUB Bangkok remains a crucial platform for professional development. • Alisa (4 White) won 1st Place in the Oceanman Kids U9 Open Water Swimming (500m) competition in Phang Nga, finishing with an impressive time of 11m 20s, organised by Oceanman Thailand.

• Tina (4 Blue) won 1st Place in the Prime Shark Tennis 10s Tournament (Girls Under 8), hosted by Prime Tennis Academy.

• Nathan (4 Yellow) was the Runner-Up in the Prime Shark Tennis 10s Tournament (Boys Under 8), hosted by Prime Tennis Academy.

• Freya (1 Yellow) achieved a Gold Award in the Modern Jazz Dance Solo (5-6 Years) and won 1st Prize in the Show Dance Group (5-6 Years) at the TDO International Dance Competition 2025, organised by the Thai Dance Organization.

Just Run Phuket

The “Just Run Phuket” weekly run has been a wonderful success, and it’s been brilliant to see so many of our HeadStart parents and teachers joining in the fun. Don’t miss out on the next one! It’s a free, friendly run for all levels, with various pace groups. Meet every Saturday at 7:15 AM at Open Kitchen (opposite Cassia) for a 7:30 AM start.
