Yearbook Photo Package Promotion

We are delighted to announce that this year, all HeadStart parents have the opportunity to purchase their child’s Yearbook photos, as well as pre-order their family’s free copy of the 2025-2026 Yearbook (and purchase additional copies if required).

There are two photo package options: Package 1 (600 THB)containing your child’s individual and class photos displayed in the HeadStart Photo Folder; andPackage 2 (1,050 THB) containing your child’s individual and class photos displayed in the HeadStart Photo Folder, plus additional class photos, a set of passport photos, and a flash drive containing digital copies of all your child’s Yearbook photoshoot images.

For our Year 6 and Year 13 graduating classes, we are also offering a Graduation Special Package (200 THB), which includes your child’s individual graduation photo and class graduation image (when ordered alongside Package 2, these digital files will also be added to the flash drive). This option is not available to parents of Reception children via this ordering system; however, our Reception children’s graduation photos will be shared via the Tapestry portal as usual in Term 3.

We invite you to create an account at the online HeadStart Shop: https://shop.headstartphuket.com/, from where you can place photo package orders for all your children. Please find below instructions on how to create an account, add your children’s details, and place your order in English, Thai, Russian, and Mandarin.

Once we have received your order, your copy of the Yearbook and photos will be available for collection from 15:30 on Monday, 22 June. Please be informed that photo packages will only be handed to the legal parent or guardian of a child on presentation of a valid HeadStart Parent ID card or other acceptable form of identification (e.g., driving licence, passport).

Community Beach Clean at Nai Harn

Help us keep our island home pristine! This Sunday, 29th March, we are calling on all HeadStart families to join our Community Beach Clean at Nai Harn Beach. We will meet at theSea Breeze Cafe at 09:30 for a morning of practical, hands-on action. This is an excellent opportunity for students to demonstrate our ‘Principled’ Learner Attribute in the real world alongside their parents. Remember to wear your House shirt to earn attendance points and represent your team!

Songkran Festival and Water Play

Just a quick reminder that our annual Songkran Festival takes place on Wednesday, 1standThursday, 2nd April. We are looking forward to bringing the HeadStart community together to celebrate Thai culture in a vibrant and engaging way. Remember to wear your colourful flowery shirts for the occasion! Our celebrations begin early on Wednesday morning with a food offering to the monks on the Football Pitch from07:30 to 07:50, and continue on Thursday with a special Songkran Assembly on the Football Pitch from08:00 to 08:40.

Following these traditional ‘Tham Bun’ merit-making ceremonies to honour Thai heritage, students will enjoy our popular water play activities. To ensure a safe and fun experience, water play is scheduled by year group across both days. Foundation and Primary students will participate during their Thai classes, while Secondary water play will be on Thursday from 15:30 to 16:00 on the Football Pitch. Remember to pack a change of clothes! We’re looking forward to celebrating with you!

Keeping Students Safe on WhatsApp: Privacy, Group Chats, and AI

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging platforms globally, but its evolving features bring new considerations for our school community. While the app officially requires users to be at least 13 years old, we know many younger students use it to stay connected. The platform offers end-to-end encryption for privacy, yet this can also mask risks such as group chat pressures where negative comments can escalate quickly. Furthermore, recent updates have introduced features like public ‘Channels’ and an integrated Meta AI assistant, which currently cannot be removed. These expose young users to potential misinformation, targeted advertising, and unvetted content.

Managing these digital landscapes requires open communication between parents and children. We strongly recommend reviewing your child’s WhatsApp privacy settings together. Simple steps, such as activating the ‘Silence Unknown Callers’ feature and restricting group chat invitations to known contacts, can significantly reduce the risk of unwanted interactions and location sharing. It is equally vital to discuss features like ‘Chat Lock’ and disappearing messages, encouraging your child to understand that while privacy is important, it should never mean secrecy from trusted adults.

Berta Palop Roca – Enrolled at HeadStart since Year 6

We are delighted to celebrate the achievements of Berta, who has received an outstanding range of university offers in competitive scientific and medical-related fields. Her offers include the University of Manchester, the University of Edinburgh, University College London (UCL), the University of Warwick and Queen Mary University of London, reflecting her strong academic profile and commitment to a future in the field of Neuroscience.

Berta studies Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Art at A Level, combining scientific rigour with exceptional creativity. She achieved the Highest Mark in Asia for IGCSE Art and Design, demonstrating an outstanding ability to communicate complex ideas visually. Alongside her studies, she has challenged herself beyond the classroom through participation in the British Biology Olympiad and achieved a Silver Award in the National Scientific Thinking Challenge, highlighting her analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Her interest in medicine is supported by valuable experience, including a placement at Bangkok Hospital Siriroj in June 2024, where she gained insight into multiple clinical departments. She has also completed her Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award, volunteered to teach English with Sunny Side Up, and pursued extracurricular interests such as aerial silks and learning Chinese (achieving HSK 4). We congratulate Berta on her achievements and look forward to her continued success.

Oliver Parker-Smith (Alistair) – Enrolled at HeadStart since Year 9

We are delighted to celebrate the success of Oliver Parker-Smith (Alistair), who has received an excellent range of university offers in Computer Science and Cyber Security across the UK.

His offers include Bournemouth University, the University of Brighton, UWE Bristol, the University of Plymouth and Solent University.

During his time at HeadStart, Alistair has demonstrated a genuine passion for computing and music, engaging deeply with programming, problem-solving and independent learning beyond the classroom. He has shown a strong curiosity for how systems work and a clear ambition to pursue a future in cyber security. Alongside his academic studies, his enthusiasm for cars has enabled him to develop a practical, hands-on understanding of complex mechanical systems, further strengthening his analytical and technical mindset.

We congratulate Alistair on his achievements and wish him every success as he prepares for the next stage of his education.

Moana – A Heartfelt Thank You to Our CAPA Stars!

CAPA Junior’s production of Moana led the way this week with incredible vocals, dancing, and acting; this was a voyage of discovery for our whole community. Emotions were high, the talent on display was even higher, and we can’t wait to tell you more about it next week and share more photos!

Early Years & Reception: Amazing Vegetables!

Our Early Years and Reception children had a wonderful time exploring the colourful world of vegetables during this Saturday’s Thai Culture Club! They learned about different types of vegetables, their benefits, and how vegetables are an important part of healthy living.

The children enjoyed a variety of engaging activities, including singing and movement with the “Vegetable Song,” sharing their favourite vegetables, and taking part in fun guessing games using real vegetables.

A highlight of the day was the hands-on planting activity, where each child planted their own vegetable to take home and care for. The session ended with an exciting interactive game and a lovely group photo, making it a joyful and meaningful learning experience for all!

Year 1-3 Students Gets Hands-on with Bamboo

Our Year 1–3 students enjoyed hands-on learning as they explored the role of bamboo in Thai culture. They learned about its many uses, from food containers and fans to decorative items, and examined real examples to understand their purpose and design.

Students also took part in fun movement activities and expressed their creativity by designing and painting their own multi-purpose bamboo pencil cases.

It was a wonderful weekend of cultural exploration, creativity, and active learning.

Year 4-6 Give Salted Eggs a Go!

Our Year 4–6 students explored Thai culture through a hands-on activity of making salted eggs, learning about traditional food preservation methods. They were introduced to key ingredients such as clay and ash, and discovered how each plays an important role in the preservation process.

This engaging experience helped students connect with local wisdom while deepening their understanding of Thai cultural practices.

B’Ball Success for the Panthers O15s!

HeadStart’s Over 15 Basketball team competed in the PISAC Championships last week which took place at UWC. The Panthers were lazer-focused from start to finish, taking on talented teams from across the island. Pride in the Panthers at the Harrow 7s

Our recent trip to Bangkok for the Harrow Bangkok International 7s football tournament was a resounding success, both on and off the pitch. The teams demonstrated remarkable unity and sportsmanship, and we take great pride in their efforts. Despite the intense heat and the challenge of playing up to six games in a day, the players’ work rate was nothing short of fantastic.

HeadStart Athletes Shine at PISAC Championships!

On Tuesday, 17th March, our combined Secondary Track & Field team headed to Thanyapura for the PISAC Championships. Representing HeadStart with immense integrity and dedication, our athletes proved that we are a force to be reckoned with.

While every team member contributed to our success, we had some truly historic individual moments. A massive congratulations to Mary, who didn’t just win gold but shattered the U15 Shot Put PISAC record! We also celebrate our Gold Medalists: Jaya (10 Blue Chaofah; High Jump), Jake (12 Blue Chaofah; Shot Put), Mason (11 Yellow Chaofah; Shot Put), and Alina (8 Yellow Cherngtalay; Discus).

Year 4 Explore Culture Through Banana Leaves

Thai heritage came to life in a hands-on way as our Year 4 Thai Foreign Language students discovered the art of working with Baithong (banana leaves), one of Thailand’s most versatile and beloved natural materials. Students quickly realised that something as humble as a banana leaf could become a work of art, and their inquisitive minds sparked endless questions: “Why does it fold this way? What makes it hold together?” With patience guiding each careful fold, what began as simple shaping soon developed into intricate Kratong-style creations and beautifully presented snacks. Thank you, Kru Nuch, for organising this excellent activity for our students.

Secondary Students Give Back: A Week of Community Service

Our Year 7 to Year 10 students took part in impactful volunteer activities across Phuket this week, showcasing the compassion, responsibility, and community-mindedness that define HeadStart.

Year 7: Kathu Temple

Our Year 7 students visited Kathu Temple to help clean and maintain the temple grounds. As part of their visit, they offered alms to the resident monks and received blessings. This hands-on experience was a practical lesson in respect and the cultural value of giving back to local institutions.

Year 8: Phuket Special Education Centre

Year 8 students spent their time engaging with younger children at the Phuket Special Education Centre. They helped assemble wind turbines and led colouring activities. This visit allowed our students to practice empathy and gain a deeper understanding of the different challenges others face, sharing genuine care and kindness.

Year 9: Asia Foundation Centre

At the Asia Foundation Centre, Year 9 students took the lead by organising arts and crafts activities and storytelling sessions. By facilitating these creative activities, our students brought joy to others while experiencing the personal fulfilment that comes from active community service.

Year 10: Luang Pu Supa Temple

Year 10 students dedicated their service to Luang Pu Supa Temple. They worked collaboratively to tidy the grounds and support the daily routines of the temple by offering alms. This experience reinforced their cultural appreciation and highlighted the importance of preserving community spaces.

We are incredibly proud of our Secondary students for their positive contributions. Experiences like these are vital for developing well-rounded, empathetic young adults who are ready to make a positive impact on the world.

Little Artists, Big Ideas – An Exhibition of Primary Art

This week, our Primary Art Exhibition, ‘Little Artists, Big Ideas’, filled the Atrium and Art Department with colour and creativity, showcasing an inspiring collection of artworks created by our young artists. The exhibition featured an impressive range of drawings, paintings, reliefs, and sculptures, alongside thoughtful reflections on the students’ rich learning journeys.

The exhibition was officially opened by Ms Howells (Director of CAPA), alongside a selection of the Moana cast, whose performances brought energy and excitement to the space. Their songs set a joyful and vibrant tone, celebrating the confidence and creativity that define our Primary community, while also offering the audience a sneak peek into the fantastic Primary production that also opened this week.

At the heart of the exhibition was the process of learning. Through carefully curated display zones – Colour and Feelings, Looking Closely, Inspired by the World, Imaginary Stories, and Hands at Work – visitors were invited to explore how ideas were interpreted and developed.

This exhibition was made possible through the dedication and hard work of Ms Mindaro and Ms Clayton, alongside the support of the CAPA team. Together, they created a space that celebrated not only the finished artworks but also the values, thinking, and growth of every student – where big ideas are nurtured through curiosity, collaboration, and creativity, and each young artist’s journey is valued as much as the final piece. Year 12 BTEC Music Students Shine in the Live Lounge

Our Year 12 BTEC Music students, Prim and Khun, rocked the Atrium during our recent Live Lounge on Friday the 13th. Performing their band set for the BTEC A1 Performing module, they were supported by peers from Years 11 to 13 and the music team to deliver an eclectic set of iconic hits. With a varied setlist featuring classics like ‘Mr Blue Sky’, ‘Back to Black’, and ‘Supermassive Black Hole’, the event was a brilliant showcase of our students’ musical talents, hard work, and growing stage confidence. A big congratulations to Prim, Khun, and all the supporting musicians for such a fantastic performance!

Maths, Maps and the 8th Wonder: Year 4 at the Big Buddha

Last week, Year 4 set off on an exciting adventure to the Big Buddha to investigate if it deserves the title of the 8th Wonder of the World. The children had a fantastic time embracing their roles as researchers, observing their surroundings and gathering evidence throughout the day.

The trip was packed with hands-on learning, from counting vehicles in traffic surveys to interviewing visitors and creating compass-guided drawings. Working brilliantly in their research teams throughout the excursion, the children returned to school buzzing with new perspectives and plenty of information to help them make their final decision.

Year 7 Students Shine at Science Fair

The Year 7 Science Fair required students to apply the scientific method and present their independent research to the school community. For many, this was their first formal research project, developing essential academic skills such as data analysis and evidence-based reasoning. The event successfully showcased their ability to ask critical questions, test hypotheses, and communicate their results clearly.

A number of awards were presented to recognise standout projects across the event:

• Community Spirit Award (voted by our Sixth Form Science Students): The strength of stomach acid –Enzo, Kacey, Ella, Liz

• Excellence in Scientific Inquiry & People’s Choice Award: Does the type of water affect seed germination? –Cindy, Polina, Ada, Amy Mia, VeronikaIn addition to the main awards, class teachersMs Owen, Mr Richardson, and Mr Simons selected projects for special recognition within their own groups, including investigations into the “5 second rule” and flame testing for non-metals. Young Mathematicians Excel!

We are delighted to celebrate the outstanding results achieved by our students in the UK Mathematics Trust Intermediate Mathematical Challenge (IMC). This prestigious national competition tests mathematical reasoning and problem-solving at the highest level, and our students rose to the occasion brilliantly.

A huge congratulations to Alan, who achieved Gold, Best in School, and set a new school high score record, and to our full cohort of medallists:

The Art of the Essay: Year 13 Complete Final Literature Milestone

Year 13 completed their final VI Form Milestone Assessment (VIMA) today for Geoffrey Chaucer’s ‘The Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale’. These assessments are a cornerstone of student success in A-Level English Literature. They seek to recreate rigorous exam conditions and offer students highly actionable feedback designed to guide their next written piece.

Indeed, the word ‘essay’ derives from the French verb ‘essayer’, meaning ‘to try’. The writer Michel de Montaigne titled his 1580 work ‘Essais’, using the term to mean ‘attempts’ at putting his thoughts into writing, rather than finished, formal treatises. Year 13 have certainly faced their fair share of academic trials this year, constantly refining their work to reach their success goals. They are now in a remarkably strong position to try once more, applying their absolute best efforts in their upcoming final examinations. Mr. Pollicutt – Head of English

Driving Change: HeadStart Students Lead the 24 Hour Race

When Nanki (13 Yellow) ran in the Phuket 24 Hour Race last year, she knew she had to do more. Driven by a desire to unite island schools against human trafficking across South East Asia, she stepped up as a Student Director for this year’s event. Her initiative sparked a massive response, with nearly 30 dedicated HeadStart students answering the call, making up an incredible 25% of all runners! Behind the scenes, Alexandra (Year 13), Nika (Year 12), and Vlad (Year 12) also dedicated hours of their free time to the organizing committee, gaining invaluable, hands-on experience in marketing, business development, and operations. “It was a perfect opportunity to acknowledge our privilege and work together to raise funds for survivors,” Nanki shared.

From 9:00 am Saturday to 9:00 am Sunday, our students pushed their physical and mental limits in a relentless relay. The atmosphere was electric, fueled by a battle of the bands, community camaraderie, and the sheer grit required to keep moving through the night, aided by a few strategically placed ice baths! The defining physical achievement of the weekend came from our Head Boy, Conor, who astonishingly secured first place overall by running a staggering 70 kilometres in just 24 hours.

Whether directing the event, coordinating logistics, or running until dawn, our Secondary students proved they are ready to tackle global challenges with compassion, independence, and drive. We are incredibly proud of their dedication to this vital cause and the real-world leadership they demonstrated from start to finish. HeadStart Heads Up to HYROX Bangkok 2026

Congratulations to all HeadStart staff and parents who headed up to Bangkok to take part in the BYD HYROX Bangkok 2026 from 20-22 March This unqiue event took over the BITEC exhibition center, drawing a record-breaking crowd of over 18,000 athletes for what became the largest fitness race in the city’s history. Participants pushed their limits through the signature format of eight 1km runs interspersed with intense functional workout stations, ranging from sled pushes to wall balls.

This high-energy weekend saw a mix of elite competitors and everyday fitness enthusiasts, including a notable debut by Thai superstar Chompoo Araya, who completed the challenge in the doubles category.
